What is Global Poverty?

1.4 billion people live on less than $1 a day

“Poverty is deprivation of common necessities that

determine the quality of life, including food, clothing,
shelter and safe drinking water, and may also include
the deprivation of opportunities to learn, to obtain
better employment to escape poverty, and/or to enjoy
the respect of fellow citizens.”

State of the World’s Women
Women and girls represent 70% of the
world’s poorest people

z Women perform two-thirds of the world’s work, yet earn 10 percent of

the world’s income

z Women produce one-half of the world’s food, but own only 1 percent
of its land

z Of the estimated 67 million children around the world who are out of
school, two-thirds are girls.

Simply put, women and girls are the poorest,

most excluded group on the face of the earth.
