Inside this issue: Can You Help?

Focus for a moment on how good you feel after you have washed

your face or brushed your teeth. These are simple, daily acts that

a lot of us take for granted. When our guests arrive for PORT in

March, not everyone will have some of the most basic items like
Outreach 4 a bar of soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste, or a washcloth. It is our
Session 5 intention to provide one hygiene kit per guest during PORT. Since

The High School Youth will be collecting toiletry items beginning
February 20 through March 13. Donated items may include:

Lent 2011 – “Eyes Wide Open”
The season of Lent is an important time in the life of all Christians. It is a time for deep-
ening our faith through worship, study, prayer, contemplation and sacrificial service.
Our theme for Lent 2011 is “Eyes Wide Open”. We will look at our spiritual blindness
and explore ways we can allow Christ to open our eyes to see Him, ourselves, our neighbors
and our world through the lens of Christ’s love.

New Member Class – February 27

Are you interested in exploring membership in Denbigh Presbyterian Church? If so, we
would love to have you join us for a New Member Class on Sunday, February 27 from 11:45
AM to not later than 4:00 PM. The class will introduce you to Presbyterian beliefs, history and
church government; allow you an opportunity to learn more about the ministries of Denbigh
Presbyterian and provide you a setting in which to get to know other newcomers.
We will gladly provide child care upon request. Please contact the church office at 877-
2048 by Thursday, February 24 if you plan to attend and to let us know of any child care
needs.

The spring quarter of the Adult I Bible Study begins March 6 on Sunday mornings at 9:15 in
the Conference Room. This quarter’s study offers a New Testament survey reflecting worship
in the early church and includes readings in I and II Timothy, Jude, Mark, Matthew, Philippi-
ans and Revelation. This study will conclude on May 29. All are welcome.

Adult II Bible Study begins March 6 from 9:15-10:30 AM and meets in the Library.
Have you wondered, “What are the Church Sacraments; how should we be looking at them?”
“What makes them a Sacrament?” “How is God’s grace involved?” Come join us for a
pleasant time of study and prayer. Books, visual aids and more. The chosen book for the
Lord’s Supper will cost $9. The chosen book for Baptism will cost $11.

Beginning in April, we will volunteer at the new Food Bank location at 2401 Alu-
minum Drive in Hampton. It is on the corner of Aberdeen and Aluminum Drive in
Copeland Industrial Park. It is across from Wendy’s. The telephone number will

Denbigh Presbyterian Church will host a Citizen Police Academy for Sen-
iors from March 9 to April 27, 2011. This 8-week program will cover topics
such as “What to Do When Stopped by the Police,” “Home Security,” “When,
Why, and How to Call the Police” plus other great information on how the de-
partment works, why there are the different divisions in the department, etc.
The classes will be held on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 AM to noon in
the Fellowship Room here at Denbigh Presbyterian Church. This program is
open to all individuals that are 55 and older. Registration forms are avail-
able in the on the bulletin board beside the kitchen.

1. Began study of Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations by Robert Schnase.

2. Concurred with the Worship Vision and Planning Team of the Worship Committee plans
for Lenten banners.
3. Heard and approved the reports of our elder commissioners (Jim Wightman and Carolyn
Woodard) to the January meeting of the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia (PEVA)
4. Reconsidered and revoked previous direction to the Kitchen Team to pursue two compa-
rable estimates (to an estimate received from Courthouse Construction) for a complete
turn-key kitchen renovation. The Session and Kitchen Team do not believe a complete
turn-key kitchen renovation is feasible for our congregation.
5. Authorized the Kitchen Team to proceed with obtaining two estimates for plumbing re-
pairs and/or reconstruction with special attention to the pipes, drains, dishwasher and hot
water needs.
6. Authorized the Kitchen Team to begin using the funds which have been donated to the
Kitchen Fund to address the highest priority item identified by the Kitchen Team,
namely plumbing issues. This may include labor, equipment, etc. for the general plumb-
ing needs identified. (As of February 20, we have $17,728.17 in the Kitchen Fund.)
(Please note that we had previously voted to begin work on the kitchen when we had
$25,000 in the fund. Neither the Kitchen Team nor the Session see a reason to wait to
begin spending these funds to upgrade the kitchen. Additionally, if items are determined
to be maintenance rather than renovation, funds will be drawn from the Facilities Budget
as needed and available.)
7. Authorized the Kitchen Team to purchase other appliances (e.g., the stove) when funds
are available in the Kitchen Fund. Plumbing issues will be addressed and paid for first.
8. Authorized the Kitchen Team to develop a fund-raising strategy for the needs of the
Kitchen updates and authorized the Kitchen Team to move forward with addressing the
needs of the kitchen as funds become available.
9. Received communication from PEVA that DPC will have one elder commissioner to
PEVA meetings during 2011.
10. Received reports from committees.
11. Prayed for DPC members, friends and ministries.

Breakfast, Saturday, March 5, at 9:00 AM. The breakfast is being prepared by the Haiti Mis-
sion Team and donations will be taken for their next mission trip. Contact Gail McLeod, Mar-
tha Miller, Anneliese Collins, Shirlie Anson or Tamie Capps for information about the Presby-
terian Women of the Church. Gail McLeod will be available at the kitchen counter on Sunday,
February 27 if you would like to sign up to attend the Women’s Birthday Offering Breakfast.

Attention Men of the Church: Brochures are available in the narthex to register for the Na-
tional Presbyterian Men’s Conference in April and the Synod Men’s Conference in July. The
national conference is in Virginia Beach this year April 7-10 at the Sheraton Oceanfront and
the synod conference as always is at Massanetta Springs in the Shenandoah Valley July 15-17.
Details of both conferences are covered in the brochures.

Each year, our high school youth take part in the Relay for Life at Todd Stadium in Newport
News. The pancake supper is one of many fundraisers that help them to support this annual
event. Please join us for good food, fun and fellowship. All proceeds benefit the American
Cancer Society.

The Prime Timers 1st Annual Chili Cook-off, planned by Gail

McLeod, was a great success. Many thanks to the seven people who en-
tered their chili in the contest. Also, thanks to everyone who provided
desserts, salads, corn muffins, chips and condiments.

Many thanks to the Presbyterian Women and our High School Youth and their leaders for
our wonderful Italian luncheon on February 13. The food, service and atmosphere were all

Join us at 9:15 AM for FUN and FELLOWSHIP while learning about our FAITH!
What’s going on in Sunday School?
Our music director Kelly Samarzea is introducing Tone Chimes to all kids and youth interested
in learning about them. The class will meet for 6 weeks to develop their playing skills. At the
end of 6 weeks on Sunday, March 20 this group will share a performance with our congrega-
tion during the worship service.
What are Tone chimes? Hand held instruments that are very similar to handbells. Come to
Sunday School - bring a friend - and learn more about them!

Denbigh Presbyterian Pre-

Pre-Kindergarten

Here at DPPK we are always looking for ways to bring the “real
world” to our students. During the month of February, our four year old
classes had a visit from a dental hygienist who talked to the students
about keeping their teeth clean. Thank you to Courtney who came to visit
us from Dr. Avent’s and Dr. Huie’s office. The four year olds are also ex-
pecting a visit from an orthopedic surgical nurse who will share information
about her job, instruments she uses, and x-rays. She’ll even bring along
“Mr. Bones” to teach the children about their bones and skeletal system!
Our 3 year old classes celebrated special Pink and Red color days,
along with Valentine’s Day, and the 2 ½ year old class had a special sweet,
salty, and sour snack when they learned about their sense of taste.
We have some other special visitors planned for the month of March.
The Children’s Museum of Virginia will present their program entitled Mag-
nets for Beginners for the 4 year olds, and the Virginia Zoo will teach the 3
year olds about Eyes, Ears, and Noses. We are looking forward to these
other interesting learning opportunities!

Remember that registration for next school year is underway!
