Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender

of the widow and orphan, you called your priest,
Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of
Christian family life and to lead the young to the
generous service of their neighbour. Through the
Example of his life and virtue may we follow your
Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his
commandment of charity and building up his Body
which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your
servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love
so that we may continue his work of caring for the
needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you
glorify your servant Father Michael J. McGivney on
earth according to the design of your holy will.
Through his intercession, grant the favour I now
present (here make your request). Through Christ
our Lord. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Let us pray with confidence to the Father in the words our Saviour gave us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy
will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep
us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the
coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever.

For the Knights of Columbus, especially Kingsway Council #3387 as we celebrate
our 60th anniversary serving our Church and community, we pray to the Lord: R.
For our chaplains, both past and present in particular Father Leo Burns our celebrant,
who have led us through our spiritual journey, may they continue to serve us, we
pray to the Lord: R.
For all our past and current Grand Knights, who have served our council in faithful-
ness, may their hard work never be forgotten, we pray to the Lord: R.
For all of us, God‟s people gathered here, called to conversion at the start of our
Lenten journey, we pray to the Lord: R.

My brothers and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries, let us
call to mind our sins.
I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have
sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have
done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the
angels and saints, and to you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the
Lord our God.

OPENING PRAYER
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Father, through our observance of Lent, help us to understand the meaning of your
Son‟s death and resurrection, and teach us to reflect it in our lives.

We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

FIRST READING (Genesis 2.7-9, 16-18, 25;3.1-7)
The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nos-
trils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. And the Lord God
planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man who he had formed.
Out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the
sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil.
And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the
garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in
the day that you eat of it you shall die.”
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make
him a helper as his partner,” And the man and his wife were both naked, were not
ashamed.
No the serpent was more crafty then any other wild animal the Lord God had
made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, “You shall not eat from any tree in the
garden?” The women said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in
the garden; but God said, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the
middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it or you shall die.” But this serpent said
to the women, “You will not die; for be opened , and you will be like God, know-
ing good and evil. “So when the women say that the tree was good for food, and
that it was a delight to the eyes, and the tree was to be desired to make one wise,
she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with
her, and he ate.
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they
sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Psalm 51)
R. Have mercy, O Lord, for we have sinned.

SECOND READING (Romans 5. 12-19)
Brothers and sisters: Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death
came through sin, so death spread to all people, because all have sinned.
If, because of the one man‟s trespass, death exercised dominion through that one,
much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of
righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.
Therefore just as one man‟s trespass let to condemnation for all people, so one man‟s
act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all people. For just as by the one
man‟s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man‟s obedience the
many will be made righteous.

GOSPEL (Matthew 4.1-11)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord.
Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by devil. He fasted
forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and
said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of
bread.” But he answered , “It is written, „Man does not live by bread alone, but by
every word that comes from the mouth of God.‟”
Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the tem-
ple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,
„He will command his Angels concerning you,‟ and „On their hands they will bear
you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.‟” Jesus said to him,
“Again it is written, „Do not put the Lord your God to the test.‟”
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms
of the world and their splendour; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you
will fall down and worship me. “Jesus said to him, “Away with you Satan! For it is
written, “Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.”
