Government and history

Changes after Soviet time Andrei
24. In the period of USSR, here were coming people from other villages
to dance at our disco, because here we had life music. Even nowadays,
there is a man, Mr. Vova Kasinich, he is a very creative man, on each
holyday he comes and sings. Namely for his songs people were coming
in our village. But when the USSR broke up, everyone started to still as
much as he could, that’s why now we have what we have.
25. Now we try to recuperate everything, to find solutions for the
village’s problems. So with our own forces, forces of pupils and
teachers we try to ameliorate the situation from our village. We succeed
something somehow.
S.M.: Tell me more about your suppositions concerning the
amelioration of the situation from your village.
But we really succeeded. We try to influence in a positive way on the
people. We had different meetings with different important people from
different spheres. We had pupils, teachers, and parents at the “School of
jobs”, we call it “Bursa”. We discussed many problems with those
people and we succeeded to teach people what they should do and what
they shouldn’t. Those representatives promised that they will help us,
maybe with money, maybe with human forces. I mean we made it! We
succeeded to involve people in a good action for community. And I
think that the people get use to such actions.
27. It’s just the fact that our village is small; we don’t have places of
work. Many people ruined their lives. They became alcoholics, despite
the fact that in the Communist period they had important posts. But
now, they don’t have anything and they became passive.
29. We would like our village to be as it was in the past.
33. I live with my grandparents. My grandparents are old people and
they know very many things, they can tell you how it was like our
village in the past. It is very interesting for me to stay with them;
History is my favorite subject and we can discuss for hours on such
topics. Sometimes we stay and they began to tell me: “Do you know that
house from that street?”, and I answer: “I’ve seen it”, “But do you know
that there was…” and I say: “No” and different other details concerning
the history of our village. My grandfather showed me a place where it
was used to be a dance floor, and also a kind of cinema where people
could go to have a rest.
34. But nowadays we don’t have any discos. We don’t have anything; if
we want to dance we have to walk till the next village – Purcari.
35. It happened as a result of the break of the USSR, this is what I have
understood from history lessons, somebody might not agree with me,
but this is my opinion! People became more passive, because during the
Communist period they were obliged to do different things and they
knew that they have to do everything and in this case they had the
chance to be promoted, otherwise they could be even punished. So, they
had a goal to accomplish, but now they don’t have any goals.
S.M.: But why they don’t have such goals?
People became passive, they don’t want anything, they just see the
misery and they don’t want anything.

Trust in government Andrei

71. If the government of Moldova would pay more attention to the
youth, would involve them in different actions, then maybe the situation
would change.
72. I think that the youth must be interested and involved in something,
that’s how they will start to do good things.
School Cristina
5. I feel very well at school, I consider this is a great experience.
S.M.: What do you like mostly at your school?
8. I like the new things I know every day;
9. I am also attracted by the subjects I like, which could be useful
in the future.
45. I do not have any problems with my school.
90. The school – it is the most important thing, because for me it is
on the first place, on the second place and on the third place as well,
mmm, I think it would be on the first places till I would graduate the
high school. … that is why I think it might be as a priority for each
school pupil, not only from my lyceum, but from everywhere.

Put marks by teachers

Cristina
91. For me there are very important even the marks, because for
studying abroad the marks, the school experience are very important,

Time dedicated for school Cristina

2. Even if my school takes me a lot of time, day by day.
4. although a lot of time I spend at school.
14. Quite a lot, there are the classes, than the homework, after that
the library.
68. In fact, I always try to combine them somehow, after classes if
I need to go to the library, it takes me a lot of time, because the
humanists have to read a lot (I am not humanist),
87. for others it is just an divertissement issue, because a lot of
youngsters are playing, and they are staying I do not know what are they
doing, after classes they are always going to the Internet-Café, they do
not do something useful, it is possible the reason is that a lot of young
people do not read as before, but they spend more time behind the
computer.

Relations with teachers Cristina

6. out of my study there are my friends, my teachers.
12. Our relationships (with teachers) are quite good, because they are
based on mutual respect, and they offer us knowledge, for instance I am
grateful, I don’t have any, mmm, how could I say, I like their job and I
respect them a lot for it.
Andrei
3. Everything is fine in my school. The teachers are very good and they
behave their selves very nice with pupils. Of course that there are some
small disputes, as it is used to be in every school: somebody might get
unprepared for the lesson, the other one might make noise etc.
Sometimes someone might quarrel, but very quickly everything comes
to the normal. All of our teachers are very kind and they have a big
experience of work. For example my form master has been working in
this school since 1972. Even the nowadays director of the school, have
taught my mother, can you imagine this? Compare when my mother has
finished the school and now I am almost finishing it!
5. Well, we have a funny collective. You know maybe in other schools,
there are more spoiled or nervous pupils, but we are gleeful, we like to
laugh.
8. We have wonderful teachers, for example Mrs. Eugenia – she teaches
Music and History in general, but in our class she teaches such
important subjects as Civic Education and Life Skills. She is a
wonderful teacher. She collects songs from old people from the village
and teaches us. She doesn’t copy the songs from the records or from the
other compositors, she teaches us folklore!
10. You, see each of us has his/her own sphere of interests. So, the
teachers find a compromise and they help us with some subjects, and we
are very attracted.
18. Our teachers are very aware, they understand us if we didn’t manage
to do all the lessons, be it because we didn’t understand or came late in
the night from the work etc., that’s why we have already an
appointment, if we didn’t manage to prepare for this lesson, then for the
next one we’ll answer 2 themes. We find a solution for each problem,
we don’t quarrel, and we understand each other. Sometimes it might
happen that the teacher didn’t manage to prepare for the lesson, but we
understand her very well.
19. Beside the fact that they are teachers, they have their own household
and the work in the gardens, they are not machines, it’s normal to forget
something.
20. Sometimes it might happen that a teacher comes on the lessons and
starts teaching the same what she had taught on the last lesson. But we
tell her about this and she says: “Well, I am not really prepared for this
lesson” and we understand her. We learn together at the lesson the new
theme and everything is fine. There were just a few times such cases.
That’s how we get on, all the time we help each other.
21. A plus for us in our school is the fact that we are just a few pupils in
a class, that’s why the teacher can help us as a pupil and as a man. We
have small classes, with few pupils, for example in my class there are
only 9 pupils. But sometimes there are only 4 or 5 pupils at the lessons,
yes, it’s true! Once we were 3 boys at the lesson. I mean it is better
because during the lesson the teacher can verify the homework, teach
the new theme and help you where you are not so strong. It is different
from cities, where in a class might be 30 pupils and the teacher don’t
manage to ask all or to pay enough attention to each of them. Here, the
teachers now each student by name and they can help us more; they give
us more information than those in cities.
54. I propose to solve this problem as our teachers do in the school: they
talk with this person. They try to tell them what is good and right and
what is not. They can discus very many times in order to help the
children to come back on the right way. When I was a child I was also
quarreled for behaving or something else. They were discussing with me
too: “you shouldn’t do this” or “you must do that” or something like
this. The teachers discus with each child apart and explain to him
different things. So, they were trying to solve the problems through
discussions, maybe in some extern cases they were asking the parents to
come to school.

Students evaluating teachers

Andrei
4. It influences very much! They have a better training; they know better
the child’s psychology, that’s why they know how, when and to what a
pupil will react. Knowing better the child’s character, they can explain
everything in a normal way to any of the pupils. So they know with
whom they must be more severe or kinder, when to say a joke and when
to keep silence. Sometimes I think that they have a special behavior for
each child apart.

37. The teachers, but the main person is the director – Mrs. Tatiana
Vasilievna – and after her, the rest of the teachers. They always support
us and encourage us when the things are complicated. They represent
the bases of a house, and we, the pupils, are its walls. We help and
sustain each other when we need. Due to the teacher’s and director’s
efforts, we won a project and now you an see how our school has
changed, it became more beautiful. And they always help us. I think that
the school really helps us.
40. You know, these are just the teacher’s efforts to breathe into our
minds that we will need everything. But I also think that we will need all
of them, because you never know what might happen in your life, but
studying all the subjects well, we will be ready for everything. They
teach us to control ourselves. For example if we see a drunk man and he
says: “Don’t come here!”, we won’t do, we will go away. They teach us
to control our emotions, and this is very good, because in the future we
will need all of these.

Relations with collegues Cristina

6. out of my study there are my friends, my teachers.
Andrei
5. Well, we have a funny collective. You know maybe in other schools,
there are more spoiled or nervous pupils, but we are gleeful, we like to
laugh.

School subjects Andrei

16. We are studying the same subjects that are taught in every school:
Mathematics, Romania, etc.

Preferred subjects
Cristina
9. I am also attracted by the subjects I like, which could be useful in the
future.
S.M.: Which are that subjects that you like?
10. Romanian language and literature, I like very much English
language as well; I spend more time with them.
39. well, I don’t like to sort the subjects: favorite and not favorite,
because it is used to think that if you have a favorite subject, then you
have to follow your studies in this domain. I am trying to learn
everything: Mathematics, Romanian, etc. I am trying to learn all the
subjects because I will need all of them, but History let’s say is like a
hobby for me.
Necessary subjects
Cristina
11. Because I think that a young man needs …, have to know more
languages that is it. I don’t know, may be it would be compulsorily for
his job, there is necessary to know some languages in a certain field.
Andrei
17. We need such subjects in daily life.

Activities after school Cristina

(extracurricular) 15. I am the „Vlăstarul” newspaper issue staff, it takes me some time,
than there is a new project with the broadcast, which will be
implemented the next year, and it takes as well some time.
16. Of course, there are young people finishing the broadcasting and
journalism courses at the Media Centre, they are interested in this field
that is linked to the newspaper field. Even my classmates and other
colleagues, older then me,
18. I like to write statements, I am doing reportages sometimes,
interviews, especially I am interested about the broadcasting,
89. Different topics, we have a lot of projects at our school, except the
classes at „Vlăstarul”, even to the history, to the Romanian language to
do different surveys, to the English classes, and that requires a lot of
time as well, it was necessary to interview young people often, even
people going on the street, and they take part to the survey, they answer
to the questions I ask. Usually they offer more diverse information
because they are working in different fields, and they are not only
school pupil, they are adults, they are different age categories.

Andrei
6. We even created a puppet show: “Tezancel”, we make
representations. All the holydays are met here with joy and laugh. But
there are such events when we don’t laugh, as for example on the 9th of
May. In general, we like to make jokes, we are a friendly collective.
7. We have a drama coterie. Also we have a folklore coterie, there
pupils of my age or even younger learn different songs.
9. For example on holidays, they make concerts, they sing songs, and
even recently on the 6th of May they showed a nice representation. I said
we have a puppet show; I took part in it for several times. We even
participated at a contest with this puppet show in Stefan-Voda, we won
a prize there. So, we have shows in the village, but also in the region. If
somebody invites us to perform our show, then we gladly go there. We
participate in different contests, we try to be special. If you could
remember there was a show “Caravela Culturii” where the songstress
Lenuta Burghila was looking for young talents. She said that she hasn’t
seen anywhere else such a collective as ours and that she enjoyed a lot
our show!
11. We also love this puppet show, we like to act in front of the entire
village.
13. All my class is involved in this! My friends, many girls from other
classes, almost all the pupils from the 6ths and the 7ths classes are
involved in these coteries. I mean a lot of people come here because
they are interested
22. Beside the normal courses, we signed up for some courses that we
would like to study more, Mathematics, Geography, some of them
signed up for the course “The Youth in Action”, here the girls were
choosing between dance and French, and they decided to study French.
The classes are divided into two subgroups and in this way we get more
information.
36. For example our “Tezancell” – it doesn’t involve only pupils, there
might come everyone who is interested in folklore. Here is the Centre of
Information, everyone is welcome to join us, be it a child from
kindergarten or an old man. Also we have a sewing centre where also
can come people of different ages to work, it depends on each person’s
abilities what he will choose. I might even say that here everyone could
find something for himself.

The role, the importance of Cristina

school 7. Through the knowledge it offers me and through all things I got from
my school, including relationship.
9. I am also attracted by the subjects I like, which could be useful in the
future.
11. Because I think that a young man needs …, have to know more
languages that is it. I don’t know, may be it would be compulsorily for
his job, there is necessary to know some languages in a certain field.
Andrei
15. But the activities from school offer us the chance to be involved in
something we like.
23. For example at the course “The Youth in Action”, where Mrs.
Eugenia is the teacher, we discussed about the fact that our village is
very dirty. So we started a company to clean up the village. In this
action took part the pupils from the school, the teachers, our parents, the
whole population from the village. At that course we discussed with Mr.
Nastas from Chisinau, with our village mayor. We discussed about the
problems we deal with in the village. We were trying to find a solution,
to se what can be done for the village.
37. The teachers, but the main person is the director – Mrs. Tatiana

hobby for me.
60. Yes, I do. Here, for example in my village, we still have something
interesting due to the school program.
63. Yes, I think these activities are really welcome. Even this
“Tezancel” it brings people together, we teach our parents not to be
passive, we invite and involve them in our activities. This is a big step
for the village’s amelioration.

Educational “needs” S.M.: What would you like to change in your school?
Cristina
13. I wouldn’t like to change something, I would add something in order
to do it more interesting, may be some activities, some group activities
in which children would be more interested and would spend their free
time after classes.
Andrei
42. I consider that everything is fine as it is now, I want the teachers to
be the same, the pupils to remain the same, maybe to change the school
as a building, because it is very old, Here studied my grandmother, my
mother and now I am studying here. I think the building resisted so
many years because there are not so many pupils who come to study
here, and if they do, they are taught to behave themselves very accurate.

Studiile superioare The importance of Cristina

high education 26. In order to affirm yourself, you need a degree, they are necessary.
27. I don’t know, it is an especial preparation, sometimes the jobs, when
you are going to be employed somewhere, the managers look first of all
through your CV, when you have a degree, there is a very big
advantage, especially in the economics or journalism field, if we could
say in this way you need deeper knowledge.
29. I think I will achieve a high level of development and I will establish
new goals, may be to have a family, or a career, something, or it is an
important step towards it
53. may be to study abroad, to achieve more experience, because their

22.Experience Experience and young people getting work

Getting experience
Cristina
91. For me there are very important even the marks, because for
studying abroad the marks, the school experience are very important,
92. There is important the new project with the broadcast that I hope to
be a beautiful things boom because there is not used to be done in every
high school and it would be a new experience for „Spiru Haret” lyceum
as well, I thing. It depends, the next year we will try to do something
new, to bring some news to our children, may be some interviews with
our teachers, and may be some music which would satisfy all of them,
teachers and school pupils, so it would be something new it was not yet
practiced
S.M: Whose broadcast project initiative was?
It was not mine, it was my friend’s initiative, because they have already
graduated the broadcasting and journalism courses and they have more
experience in this field, I am still too young, but I am still learning this
field.

Strategies, activities, Cristina

taking control 72. The last time there are a lot of projects for young people, in our
school they have the possibility to practice dancing. There are different
Centres for children, Media Centre as well, they can participate there to
a radio or a newspaper, I thing the last time there are created a lot of
things for children and youth in order to do something in their free time
and only to watch TV.
84. Perhaps I try to check my own capacities, to learn by myself,
studying and writing statements, doing reportages, there is very
important for myself to do this step. Even for achieving experience in
communicating with people being different ages and categories,
especially through my statements and reportages, I bring something new
for me and my school pupils; I share my opinions and proposals.

54. then to come back in Moldova, to do something in my country,

73. Young people who know about these activities participate to them,
perhaps our big problem is that a lot of youngsters, especially from the
rural communities, do not know all these things,
92. There is important the new project with the broadcast that I hope to
be a beautiful things boom because there is not used to be done in every

28. Of course, everyone who tries to do something feels our support.
They might get help from pupils, teachers, and parents. My family
wants to help the village somehow. We are not indifferent to what
happens in our village.
64. If they will be interested in something, it doesn’t matter in what,
then they will do something good for the village.
81. I would like to see my village brighter, I would like it to be more…
more…I don’t know how to say, in a better situation; I think that the
main goal from our “Youth in Action” is to find a way to ameliorate the
situation from our village from all points of view. I mean we want to
make a project and to win enough money to install more ash cans, to
make new benches, I mean to make more comfortable our village.
Engaging vs. stagnating / Engaging versus stagnation, waiting
waiting The causes of young no implication
Cristina
73. Young people who know about these activities participate to them,
perhaps our big problem is that a lot of youngsters, especially from the
rural communities, do not know all these things,
74. we know that the majority of population in need lives there, and, in
fact, there are a lot of good young people who could do beautiful things
for Moldova, but they do not have these possibilities,
75. perhaps financial resources as well, it is very important.
77. because there, as I said there are not enough possibilities,
78. they do not have a clear goal in their life, they see the high school
graduating then to come in Chisinau to study to the University or to go
abroad, then they do not know how to act.
96. It is possible on their possibilities, because not all young men have
these possibilities,
97. even for dancing, because a lot of young men prefer to dance, to
practice dancing is paid and a young man who has limited financial
resources does not have any possibilities to affirm himself in this field.
Andrei
14. and because we don’t have anything else to do here in the village.
You can get for a walk with a friend and that’s all you can do here.
27. It’s just the fact that our village is small; we don’t have places of
work. Many people ruined their lives. They became alcoholics, despite
the fact that in the Communist period they had important posts. But
now, they don’t have anything and they became passive.
64. If they will be interested in something, it doesn’t matter in what,
then they will do something good for the village.
72. I think that the youth must be interested and involved in something,
that’s how they will start to do good things.

Different ways of implication young

Cristina
76. Perhaps there is necessary to create more Centres in more villages,
in order that young people could try different fields,
79. I think communication with other people, with persons with
experience who can inspire you …, to know different persons who can
show their experience, dreams, and wishes.
80. I think that when a young man establishes a goal if he believes in it
he can make it true, they would do something good to trend to
something.
100. Day by day, working, for a successful professional life there are
necessary to have a lot of knowledge in this field, in a family there is
necessary to have values, as I mentioned - respect, understanding, for
travelling there is necessary mmm even to have money, but for having
money there is necessary to work a lot. Because every job you do, you
develop yourself, you receive a feed-back to your effort and you achieve
experience and you are well paid as well.
Andrei
23. For example at the course “The Youth in Action”, where Mrs.
Eugenia is the teacher, we discussed about the fact that our village is
very dirty. So we started a company to clean up the village. In this
action took part the pupils from the school, the teachers, our parents, the

Nastas from Chisinau, with our village mayor. We discussed about the
problems we deal with in the village. We were trying to find a solution,
to se what can be done for the village.
26. Well, it depends on the whole population of the village, on the
village hall, on school, but it can be seen the school’s support. It should
be involved all the people from the village, but they are very passive,
they are not interested. They don’t stop someone if they see that he is
deteriorating something, they don’t care, or when they see that someone
is still something, they are not interested in helping the victim, because
they are not involved in this.
38. Well, it is the youth that tries to succeed everywhere, and I think that
if they won’t leave the village as many do, then they might have a very
important role here.
73. For example, for pupils who study well in schools an attraction point
might be all the Olympiads. In case of the pupils who don’t have such a
success with the subjects, they might be involved in something that they
like. If someone likes to ride the bike, then they should organize a bike
competition. If another one is interested in something else, he should
know all the other persons with the same interest and they might
organize something in order to communicate more and to do something
that they want.

Reasons for changing jobs ? Reasons to change the jobs

Influence parents Parents influence

Cristina
59. She (family) supports me often, when I have a certain idea, an
especial or a crazy one, I tell her to my family first of all, my parents are
always questioning me, they advice me, support me, encourage me to
make true my idea.

Andrei
65. I think it depends more on my mother. I can’t argue with my mother.
If she says to go there – I will go there, if she says to stay here – I will
stay here.

Obstacles to getting on / Cristina

personal development 17. and unfortunately, there are involved more young people other 16 th
years old. I consider that it would be necessary that the younger people
to have to say something, in such activities their opinion is important as
well and they have as well crazy and very interesting ideas.
21. Yes, of course, but they do not succeed every time,
22. it depends on the financial situation as well,
23. on the luck of the possibilities, I think that young people from
Republic of Moldova, I don’t know, in other circumstances, they
manage to do more than young people from abroad.
24. I mean that even there are limited possibilities; they manage to
do something, during their studies and after that.
Andrei
59. I think not in Moldova. S.M.: Why?
In Moldova you don’t see anything. But in other countries, even in
Russia, you have more possibilities. You can go there to a theatre, to a
cinema or else. Yes, we have all these things in Moldova, but not in the
villages, you can’t see them there. For example my friend who lives in
Moscow goes in for dancing (break dance) there, because there he has
this possibility, but here we don’t. Many people tell me: “You are a
smart guy, why do you stay here? Go somewhere and live better. You
waist in vain your youth!”. Here we have nothing to do.
62. For example in Russia, if there is a march past, I can go and see it, I
have more possibilities to see something interesting, but here – nothing.
78. What should I do next? I don’t know, that’s why I decided to study
in the 10ts, 11th, and 12th form. Then I will decide during 3 years what
profession to choose, I will study this profession and I will go to work,
as any normal man.

The “portrait” of young Cristina

people 20. They must be responsible; they must to have, mmm…, certain
abilities to do it, to have initiative, sometime imagination, to like it and
to love their job.
78. they do not have a clear goal in their life, they see the high school
graduating then to come in Chisinau to study to the University or to go
abroad, then they do not know how to act.
83. I even don’t know, people being my friend, are surprising me with a
new idea, look, let do in this way, let write a statement to „Vlăstarul”,
something more interesting, there are a lot of young people being
satisfied about themselves to be as they are, they do not wish to do
something more, they are satisfied about their life, perhaps watching the
whole day TV after classes satisfies them, I am not satisfied to do only
this thing, I am more active.
85. The majority of them are about school, about thesis, teachers,
sometime they are about school pupils and some topics as: the school
pupil permit, which is very stressful for school pupil, I don’t know why,
perhaps they are lazy in the morning and do not take it, so there is a big
problem, something like this, about school; may be something about
youth activities, what are their hobbies, may be the Internet, I know,
arts, and so on.
86. The computer (she smiles), because it can offer us a lot of things,
sometimes they are in our favour, sometimes they are not, it depends on
how do we spend our time behind him. For instance the Internet is
necessary for communication and information, sometime it helps me to
write a ..., even a report from the Internet, to write the news,
87. for others it is just an divertissement issue, because a lot of
youngsters are playing, and they are staying I do not know what are they
doing, after classes they are always going to the Internet-Café, they do
not do something useful, it is possible the reason is that a lot of young
people do not read as before, but they spend more time behind the
computer.

Andrei
38. Well, it is the youth that tries to succeed everywhere, and I think that
if they won’t leave the village as many do, then they might have a very
important role here.
70. Well, the nowadays youth don’t have any values. They just drink
and do different bad things, things that are forbidden by the law. They
don’t have values, they don’t long for anything! Those who have found
a circle of interest, they might aspire for something, but the others don’t
realize anything.
75. Well, maybe my hair cut is different or the way I am dressed, but in
general I think that I have my own character that is different from the
other’s, and that’s the difference.
80. I don’t know what it could mean (TO BE YOUNG). Well, to be
young means that you are looking for some interests, the same as yours,
you form your character, and you are in Moldova, you are tying to
clarify what do you want from your life and make a choice. Sometimes
it is not the right choice, but nevertheless…In each country I think that
there are many good people. I know that here, we also have a lot of good
people who will help; for example teachers help pupils, pupils help
parents and so on and so forth. Even the youth can help each other.

Young people change values

98. Or he sees other field, he tries in other place, where he has abilities
to do this or he is changing totally his life values and become
disappointed on his life. … I do not know, I did not discuss with a lot of
young people about this topic, possibly there is the family, it could be a
value, the friends environment, the family respect, the good
understanding with other people, and more values and more criteria, I
thing these could be, but I do not know how is in reality.

Personal dreams
Cristina
71. There are a lot of people who established a certain goal and do not
succeed to do something else except their goal, for instance if their goal
is to build a dancer career, they do not have time to read or to listen
music.

Conditions to succeed

Family Family network Cristina

31. My family is quite interesting and I love it very much.
34. My father is chauffeur; he is working in a state company. As a
personality he is more reserved, he is quite,
36. In fact I have very close relatives, we have strong relations with
them because I don’t have brothers or sisters, I like my cousins as well,
38. the closest to me is one of my cousins, her name is Viorica, we are
like two sisters, I could say she is our family member, I like as well my
grandparents.
S.M.: Do your colleagues have the same family model as you do?
60. I think that for each child or even for each adult his family is the
best. Even if people have a lot of defects or they are bad, although they
are considered to be the best and they love them very much, I think that
for each of us the family is very important, so it is considered to be the
best.
S.M.: If we are talking about the family relationship?
For sure families are different, but I think that all my colleagues love
their families.
Andrei
30. My mother, my parents work in Moscow.
33. I live with my grandparents. My grandparents are old people and
they know very many things, they can tell you how it was like our
village in the past. It is very interesting for me to stay with them;
History is my favorite subject and we can discuss for hours on such
43. My grandmother was a teacher in the “Bursa”, she was teaching the
students to cook. She is such a sweet person, everyone loved here, the
boys and the girls whom she had taught loved her very much. My
grandfather is a person who likes very much to work. All the day long
he is working around the house, now he is fixing something, then he
cuts the grass, etc. My grandfather is a glamorous person, he has his
own style in clothing, and he tries to teach us the same thing, to teach us
to be more special in clothing. But I don’t like such things, I can’t suffer
shoes. My grandfather, for example loves shoes and panty hose, but I
prefer crosses and sport clothes. My mother is very young, she is 36
years.
46. I can’t tell anything, I don’t have a father, just a mother.

Communication between family members

Cristina
66. with my family – about each of us, our successes,
Andrei
44. She works in Moscow as a selling manager in cosmetics and
perfumes; this is the sphere where she works. She comes here often, we
see each other, also we discuss on the phone very much. I mean we
don’t deal with the situation when the mother is gone abroad and she
totally forgets about her son, no, we are very close.
S.M.: But how can you maintain the relationships if the parents are
not near to you?
For example if I hove some troubles I send my mum a message:
“Mammy, I have such a problem!” I mean I feel all the time that she is
near me, she always sustains me and she always help me to choose the
right way. I might have some problems maybe at school, or maybe with
some of my friends, and my mother always helps me to understand the
situation and to find a solution for it. I mean, I feel her around me, even
if she is not actually in Moldova.
Andrei
47. we get on very well, they know my since I was born, and they
understand me very well.

Relations in family Cristina

31. My family is quite interesting and I love it very much.
33. my parents are different and I have what to learn from both of them,
I love them very much.
35. in some situations I behave as he is doing, in other situations I am
like my mother, perhaps it is something inherited.
39. I like the celebrations, especially on Eastern or Christmas we are
very close,
40. we are gathering to our grandmother, I like this atmosphere, when
the family is together, when we are talking about commune things and
interests, when we are happy, there are children of different ages, each
of them has his own experience, I like this atmosphere very much.
41. That there is very clear that we are a friendly and big family.
42. That for me is very interesting to be with my family, sometimes
there Is more important than to be with my friends, each of us has his
own experience, as I told you, I can learn from each of them something,
they can advice me, and when I an in need, they can support me,
59. She (family) supports me often, when I have a certain idea, an
especial or a crazy one, I tell her to my family first of all, my parents are
always questioning me, they advice me, support me, encourage me to
make true my idea.
94. I think yes, my friends, my family notice always that I am smiling
every day and, in fact, this is a factor which determines my happiness:
look how much you are happy, look how you are smiling today, and I
think that – yes. In fact, I don’t know an exact definition, because
everyone is different, at the age I am I am happy.
S.M.: But how can you maintain the relationships if the parents are

some of my friends, and my mother always helps me to understand the
situation and to find a solution for it. I mean, I feel her around me, even
if she is not actually in Moldova.

Andrei
47. we get on very well, they know my since I was born, and they
understand me very well.
48. I don’t know, maybe the fact that they are industrious people. Each
man will say just nice things about his family, how could somebody say
something bad about his family? I like my family, they are very active:
my mammy, my grandmother and my grandfather. Is something
happens in the village, or if there are some shows, they try to be present
all the time. Maybe this is what I like most of all: they are just nice
people! They are respected in village by everyone.
58. But now my mother is like the firs aid. She always sends us
products, money, helps us as she can. My grandmother also works. We
have a big vine estate. My grandmother is an agriculturist; she knows
very many things about everything. She knows how to take care of
different plants, etc. Well, we collect the grapes, we make vine from
them, and latter we can sell this vine in order to earn money. We live as
all people do in the small and poor villages.
66. I want to be with my mother, I spend a lot of time without her, that’s
why I miss her very much and I want to stay with her.

Relations with large family

Cristina
43. even my relatives who are elderly or my cousins who are my peers
and we are thinking in the same way.
44. The last time I did not need any advices, because I ask an advice
when I am on a dilemma, when I don’t know what I have to choose,
now everything is going on very well. …But they advice me how I
should speak…

Family ideal Cristina

47. but I would like to come all of them together, as it was when I was a
little child, than it was better, because, I remember, we were all at my
grandmother, but each of us has his own life, perhaps there is a normal
situation.
61. I don’t know, I did not think about it enough, I do not have the age I
would do it, I would like to have a family based on respect, love, mutual
understanding, perhaps this could be an ideal family, in order to make it
true, there is necessary to work a lot starting with this moment.
S.M.: What do you mean?
To develop some values, for family, I don’t know, to try to develop
more qualities, to learn how to respect people, to love, to be calm, not to
become angry too easy, to create you a good environment for a family.
S.M.: Do you think you are on the right path; do you achieve the
necessary abilities you are talking about?
I think I have to work more on this thing, I don’t know, when I will
become an adult, when I would be prepared to have my family, then I
would analyze my way and I will see what I have to work on more, what
I have to do more in order to create an ideal family, because this is what
everyone desires.
95. This is a very interesting question, I think: (happiness) first of all to
have a family which will support him, and friends which would always
help him, which would be ready as well to support him to have any
successes, I consider that successes are necessary for a young man,
because they give you a positive energy, they push you to go on in order
to reach any goals, it is possible to be this thing. And some interests,
some activities to which young men trend, they wish to affirm
themselves in any field, in this way I consider young people can look to
be happy.

Family traditions Cristina

40. we are gathering to our grandmother, I like this atmosphere, when
the family is together, when we are talking about commune things and
interests, when we are happy, there are children of different ages, each
of them has his own experience, I like this atmosphere very much.

The Future
Plans for the future Individual Plans for the future
Cristina
19. now I participate to courses in this field, I like it, and it is what I
would like to do in the future.
28. The previous year I was thinking to become a doctor because I liked
my mother’s job, the atmosphere, their white dress, now I am thinking
to apply for arts, may be to become an actress, or to apply for journalism
or international relationships.
30. My dream (she smiles), as I have mentioned, to graduate the faculty,
to be employed, then to grow in the field I would practice.
32. My mother is medical assistant may be she determined my
preference for this field,
99. If I count well, in 5 years, I see myself at the University, I see
myself I don’t know yet to which faculty, for sure there will be high
courses, university study in fact, I see myself studying day by and
advancing in my professional life. .. To achieve my goals that I
mentioned hear by, to propose new goals, to have new dreams, to
perform them, I see my life in to be quite interesting, may be to travel
more, and that it.
Andrei
41. I have enough time to think about this. Maybe I might become a
teacher of history, as many of my classmates use to say. In general I am
not interested only in history, I like also the last technologies: computer,
cell phones and so on and so forth. I want to work something in this
sphere.
59. (in the future) I think not in Moldova.
65. I think it depends more on my mother. I can’t argue with my mother.
If she says to go there – I will go there, if she says to stay here – I will
stay here.
74. I want to have a normal life like any normal man. I want to have a
family, children, a place of work. I have the same aspirations as any
normal man.
77. We should have something, something to do, something to aspire to,
I mean I am finishing my studies, this is the last year and I will leave the
school.
82. I don’t know, I like very much history, and I would like to have a
travel in the past. But this is just a dream but who knows, maybe once it
could be true. I want just to live and to be happy, I want everything to be
fine as it is now.

Groups plans for future

Cristina
92. In fact, the team is not yet well created; it will be created the next
year, when I will be in the 11th class, even now I will start my activity to
the Media Centre for these courses, and I think they will be very helpful
for me the next year I think that during the summer we will discuss as
well, we will ask the young people we will do some surveys and we will
decide about this project goals and terms.

Becoming somebody in future

Cristina
25. Yes, I am often thinking about it, I would do a faculty for sure, but I
don’t know, I did not decide yet which one; this is my life goal, to have
a degree.
29. I think I will achieve a high level of development and I will establish
new goals, may be to have a family, or a career, something, or it is an
important step towards it
30. My dream (she smiles), as I have mentioned, to graduate the faculty,
to be employed, then to grow in the field I would practice.

Plans for the children Plans for children’s future

Uncertainty about future Uncertainty for future

Andrei
57. Yes, we could live here, work somewhere, earn somehow some
money, but it would be very difficult.
78. What should I do next? I don’t know, that’s why I decided to study
in the 10ts, 11th, and 12th form. Then I will decide during 3 years what
profession to choose, I will study this profession and I will go to work,
as any normal man.

Emigration
Migration/going abroad Cristina
37. (my cousins) but now the majority are abroad,
S.M.: Did you think to go abroad?
52. Yes, I did it many times, but I would like to work in Moldova,
55. All young people I know wishes to go abroad, because there, as I
told you, there are other conditions, in our country there is hard to prove
your capacities, there are big obstacles.

Andrei
30. My mother, my parents work in Moscow.
32. We have a lot of parents who are gone somewhere in Russia, in
Moscow, in order to earn money.
45.Yes, she does. She was also a teacher and was working with my
grandmother in the same sphere, but then she went to study in Odessa,
and I get used since childhood that she is not permanently with me.
Well, I was a 7 year child when she left to Moscow.
49. For example I have a classmate, his mother has also gone
somewhere to work and he remained home with his younger brother.
Despite of the fact that this boy has the same age as I am, he can do
everything: he can cook, he can sew, he can make the fire in the stove
etc. He is an independent person.
S.M.: How does he feel himself in this situation?
As everyone would feel himself when the mother is gone. He misses
her very much. This is characteristic for all those who get used to
somebody, and now, Bam! And his mother is not with him!

Relations with persons Cristina

who work abroad 46. I would like that my cousins would come at home, they are living
there already, they have there families, one summer there are coming to
us from France, other summer there are coming from Spain,
S.M.: How do you maintain your relationships with your relatives
from abroad?
48. We are writing letters or emails quite often, we are calling each
other, even when there is a birthday, we are always congratulating each
other, we are talking, discussing, during the summer when they are
coming and every time we manage to meet each other and to tell
something.
57. Sometime I am thankful, sometimes I am sorry they are not near me,
when we are talking about friends or relatives, my happiness is so big
when I see them back, near me.
Andrei
44. She works in Moscow as a selling manager in cosmetics and

The causes of the Cristina

phenomenon 49. Because of the living conditions, we know that sometime there is
better,
50. there are more opportunities to prove your competences, for their
children there are more perspectives.
51. They have families and I refer to the material conditions, the
insurance.
53. may be to study abroad, to achieve more experience, because their
studies are deeper,
55. All young people I know wishes to go abroad, because there, as I
told you, there are other conditions, in our country there is hard to prove
your capacities, there are big obstacles.
Andrei
31. because of the nowadays conditions from the village.
32. We have a lot of parents who are gone somewhere in Russia, in
Moscow, in order to earn money.
52. A lot of people are leaving abroad because they have nothing to
work here. I mean, there is about 40% of the population that work
somewhere abroad. But those 40% they also have children who
remained in Moldova.
55. I discussed with my mother about this. I tell her: “do you want to
come back?”, she answers: “And what will I do there, can you tell me?”,
I say: “You will live with me, I have been growing without you for so
many years!”, my mother says that better she will take me with her
there, but she won’t come here because she has nothing to do here. She
says: “Ok, let’s say that I will come, we will spend in 3 months
everything I have earned, and what ten? What will we do? Starving?”.
So my mother says NO to coming home.

The impact of migration Advantages

Cristina
50. there are more opportunities to prove your competences, for their

Disadvantages
Cristina
57. Sometime I am thankful, sometimes I am sorry they are not near me,
Andrei
56. What I can think? Of course I would like my mum to be here, but on
the other hand I understand her.
66. I want to be with my mother, I spend a lot of time without her, that’s
why I miss her very much and I want to stay with her.

Andrei
49. For example I have a classmate, his mother has also gone

As everyone would feel himself when the mother is gone. He misses her
very much. This is characteristic for all those who get used to
somebody, and now, Bam! And his mother is not with him!
50.Yes, this is an actual problem. Of course that if the parents are gone,
then the children remain under their relative’s supervision, but it’s not
the same thing. They don’t feel, I don’t know how to explain, they don’t
feel the same care and the same concerning when they come too late, or
when they have some problems etc. For example in my family it is
something normal for me when I come home, I must tell my
grandparents where have I been during the day, with whom and what
have I done. But in other families, the relatives don’t care what the
children have done during the day.
51. I want to say that it will influence very much.
53. And these children constitute the youth that is degrading. They
become more passive, they are not interested in studies, they just sit at
the lessons and have no patience until the lesson will finish and they
leave the school.

Andrei
33. I live with my grandparents. My grandparents are old people and
they know very many things, they can tell you how it was like our
village in the past. It is very interesting for me to stay with them;
History is my favorite subject and we can discuss for hours on such
45.Yes, she does. She was also a teacher and was working with my
grandmother in the same sphere, but then she went to study in Odessa,
and I get used since childhood that she is not permanently with me.
Well, I was a 7 year child when she left to Moscow.

Population’s information The role of school

about the phenomenon Andrei

The future of persons who Andrei

work abroad 55.
57. Yes, we could live here, work somewhere, earn somehow some
money, but it would be very difficult.

What they told first Cristina

1. I can say that I am spending my life in an interesting way, out of my
school.
Andrei
1. Everything is fine, like a teenager’s life. In the morning I am
studying.

Friends Cristina
62. My friends, I have friends of different ages, mmm, beginning with
friends from my family, I consider all of them to be my friends, then my
classmates, our school pupils, my friends from „Vlăstarul” newspaper,
friends from the school magazine, and friends with whom I cooperate
now for the radio. I have friends from different countries, from
Romania, Ukraine, Russia,
Andrei
69. Yes, it’s true, we must choose carefully with whom we spend our
time, because friends influence a lot one another. For example, I don’t
speak with such kind of persons who could influence in a negative way
on me. I have only friends whom I know very well and whom I trust. I
know that they will help me when I need, and in my turn, I will help and
sustain them when they will need.

The relations with friends Cristina

63. I knew them during the summer camp, and I maintain relationship
with a lot of them.
64. Usually when my friends from abroad are coming here I always
meet them. I try to communicate with my friends from my school, to do
something together, even for the school – because for the history we
have a lot of projects to do in groups, to tell our ideas, in a non-formal
atmosphere, in park or to a café. With friends from my family I
communicate to the celebrations/parties or by Internet, by letters, e-
mails, calls, and so on.
81. We are influencing each other mutually, because, normally,
sometimes my interests are linked to theirs and they are very important
for me because in any activity I can trust them, they can advice me, they
can make me to do something, they can help me somewhere, they are
always near me, my real friends.
82. Possible I also influence them, because the friends I have and who
consider me to be their friend, when they ask me for an advice, when
they ask me to help them I am always ready to help them with advices,
with a good word, may be with a support, in order to go on and to trust
me in the future.

Communications with Cristina

friends 65. It depends, for instance with friends from „Vlăstarul” we are talking
about journalism, sometimes about politics, literature, with the
classmates about something interesting from our life,… there are
different linked to sports and…
Andrei
68. The sphere of interest is different, that’s why when we meet, we
discus about everything: we discus about films, about cell phones, about
news. If somebody saw something interesting he tells us and we start
discussing about that. In general, we discus on different topics.
For example if we speak about telephones, then we might discuss about
the smallest details in a telephone, and then pass to television, we
remember something and we start laughing. We like to joke. But in
general we discus about everything: about animals, films etc. It’s just
that we like to talk about life, about how everything is going on. That’s
how we spend our free time.

What I do with my free Cristina

time 3. Mmm, I like as well sports, I practice sports, and I am going out with
my friends, with my family,
67. I like to talk about music, I like the music, the literature, the arts, and
these are the topics close to my heart.
S.M. Is that the reason you thought about the Academy of Arts?
Yes, because during 5 years I learned the actor activity with my high
school teacher, perhaps that influenced me to love this field, I sang one
year, I had classes of canto, so I started to love more the music, to
understand it better.
69. when I have free time I am going to swim, I like it very much.
Sometimes, earlier in the morning I used to go to the swimming pool, it
was very romantic, the stars were still on the sky, and I was swimming,
that gave me energy in the morning.
88. I am going out with my friends; I am reading, I like to read very
much, I am listening music, I do sports quite often, and I am going out
in the city with my friends, sometime I am interviewing any people on
the street.

Andrei
2. In the evening if have some free time, I get out for a walk, or I meet
with my friends and have a chat.
6. We even created a puppet show: “Tezancel”, we make
representations. All the holydays are met here with joy and laugh. But
there are such events when we don’t laugh, as for example on the 9th of
May. In general, we like to make jokes, we are a friendly collective.
She said that she hasn’t
seen anywhere else such a collective as ours and that she enjoyed a lot
our show!
61. But in other villages they don’t have anything interesting to do. For
example I have some friends in Purcari. I ask them: “What do you do?”
and they say: “we go to school, and then come home, on Saturdays we
might go to the disco, in rest we have nothing interesting to do.” The
grown ups go to work and nothing else. Even on holydays they don’t
have anything interesting to do. They walk in the village some hours and
they come home.
67. Well, I like computer games, I like to meet with my friends. We
discuss.

Opinion about free time of young

Cristina
70. Not all of them, because there are a lot of them who fall on
extremities, for instance, either the school either the Internet, if there is
the Internet they spend 5 hour/day, sometimes they communicate or they
are just playing, even the boys, or there are people who likes something
very much and they do not want to combine it with something else.
Even if they like the actor activity, they are playing theatre a lot of
hours/day.
86. The computer (she smiles), because it can offer us a lot of things,
sometimes they are in our favour, sometimes they are not, it depends on
how do we spend our time behind him. For instance the Internet is
necessary for communication and information, sometime it helps me to
write a ..., even a report from the Internet, to write the news,
87. for others it is just an divertissement issue, because a lot of
youngsters are playing, and they are staying I do not know what are they
doing, after classes they are always going to the Internet-Café, they do
not do something useful, it is possible the reason is that a lot of young
people do not read as before, but they spend more time behind the
computer.

Happiness Cristina
93. I think I am 100% satisfied about my age because I don’t know
when I will be old (she smiles), in this way I could look behind me and I
could see what I did or I didn’t well, till now everything satisfies me. I
am glad about what I am doing and, in fact, when I do not succeed to
perform something or I confront any obstacles, always I try to thank to
myself, to overcome them, to do how is comfortable for me, to live a life
which is comfortable for me.
Andrei
12. Sometimes you might stay on the scene, sing your song and you
hear your voice and you are satisfied with what you are hearing. Then
you hear the applause and you are really happy. I can sing for example
very well and I am happy when I act in front of my teachers, my
relatives.
76. (satisfied)Yes, but not 100%!
79. (HAPPY)Yes, of course.
S.M.: And what means happiness for a young man?
It’s when you know that in difficult moments there will be somebody
who will help you, even when you are stressed or nervous there will be
somebody who will sustain you and tell some nice words, who will
alleviate your pain. This is happiness in my opinion.
83. Yes, for me everything is fine. The teachers sustain me, my parents
sustain me, my friends also sustain me. I have a goal that I want to
accomplish. I have my sphere of interest, I have what to do. Everything
is fine now.
S.M.: Is the situation from the other families from your village the
same as yours?
Some of them maybe have more problems from the financial point of
view, the others maybe have the same situation as mine, and some
maybe have a better situation then I do. I don’t judge people by their
clothes or money. I see just the man who stands in front of me. He can
interest me with his brains or with his character.
