INTRODUCTION

This research was conducted by the IV-Faith Students of Ismael Mathay Sr. High School
Year 2010-2011. It is conducted to determine the prior daily expenses among 100 students in
IMSHS.

as the Filipino listeners. Because of some factors like theirgender, age, environment, etc., High
School

students differ in their preferred music genre.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Statement of the Problem:

This research is conducted to answer the question, what is the preferred music

genre among 100 students of IMSHS School Year 2010-2011. We also tries to find-out how
often do

they listen to music which merely explains their purpose and by the benefits they have acquired
from

listening music.
Hypothesis:

High School Students preferred popular music most due toforeign influences.
Best

example of this is the Korean popular music which had lead to the transition of traditional music
style

of the Philippines to a modern generation style.

Further more, due to modern technology or other multi- media devices, a student was

prone to a certain music genre depending on his/her environment.

Significance of the Study:

This study is important to determine the status quo of the currenthigh school students'

choice of music genre. It has been said in the news that our current music industry is slowly
dying. Our

traditional Filipino folk songs were being rejected by the new generation.
This study aims to persuade and open-up the mind of teenagers to emphasize our own

culture and our own music.

2. Anglo-Norman musik, musike, Old French musique, and their source Latin mūsica, from
Ancient Greek μουσική (τέχνη) "(art) of the Muses".

Scope and Delimitation:

This research covers the students of Ismael Mathay Sr. High School of the

School year 2010-2011. We randomly selected 100 students consists of 50 male students and 50
female

students, in different year levels and sections. The respondents are classified to be in 12-18 years
old.
Chapter II
This chapter contains the brief history of the study. Music is a form of art
that

since in the pre-historic era, people were already engaged to it. By the use of different
instrument,

people have cultivated music. As the time goes by, there are many studies and research
conducted to

enrich the culture of their music. Hence, the science of music is continuously spreading and
classified

to different music genre.

Review to Related Literature:

Before 1800
The first studies of Western musical history date back to the middle of
the 18th

century. G.B. Martini published a three volume history titled Storia della musica (History of
Music)

between 1757 and 1781. [Martin Gerbert] published a two volume history of sacred music titled
De

cantu de musica sacra in 1774. Gerbert followed this work with a three volume work Scriptores

ecclesiastici de musica sacra containing significant writings on sacred music from the 3rd
century

onwards in 1784.

1800-1950

Ludwig van Beethoven's manuscript sketch for Piano Sonata No. 28,
Movement IV, Geschwind, doch nicht zu sehr und mit Entschlossenheit (Allegro), in his own

handwriting. The piece was completed in 1816.

In the 20th century, the work of Johannes Wolf and others developed
studies in

Medieval music and early Renaissance music. Wolf's writings on the history of musical notation
are

considered to be particularly notable by musicologists. Historical musicology has played a

critical role

in renewed interest in Baroque music as well as medieval and Renaissance music. In particular,
the

authentic performance movement owes much to historical musicological scholarship. Towards

the

middle of the 20th century, musicology (and its largest subfield of historical musicology)
expanded

significantly as a field of study. Concurrently the number of musicological and music journals

increased to create further outlets for the publication of research. The domination of German
language

scholarship ebbed as significant journals sprang up throughout the West, especially America.

Chapter III
This chapter contains the instrumentation we used and the methods of
gathering

data we performed to find the answer to the problem.

Instrumentation:
In gathering data, we use the Survey method. We formulated 100

questionnaires for our 100 respondents. Then we classify each respondents to their
corresponding

gender and their answers to each questions.

Data Gathering Instruments:

In this study we use the Survey method of gathering data. A Survey
method of

gathering data is a way of gathering data through the use of distributing the questionnaires about
the

things you want to know and let your respondents fill them out.

After all the respondents answer all the questionnaires, we classified each

papers ( questioners ) according to gender, age, and the answer to each of the questions no. from
1-4.

And lastly we get their respective percentage.

In getting the respective percentage, we use the formula:

where in :

p= Percentage

n= Those no. of respondents

r= Total no. of respondents

Chapter 4
This chapter contains the graphical presentation of the result we gathered
after performing the method of gathering data. It also contains the interpretation which
corresponds to the graph.

state that RNB and Popular music

are the preferred music genre of 100

students of IMSHS.

In the given graph above, in the choice of answer B, most male and
female

considered it as the their ideal time of listening music as it is describe by their 42% response. In
choice

of answer A, 19% ( both Male and Female ) said that they listen to music all the time. In 50 Male

students, 24% of them choose answer A, while, out of 50 Female students, 14% of them have
chosen

the same answer.

enhance their vocabulary

Chapter V
This chapter contains the summary of the results we have gathered from
the

chapter IV. After tallying the research, we came-up to our conclusion. The further discussion
were

discussed in this chapter.

Generalization:
After the data has been gathered, we could infer that 46% of female
students

preferred RNB music ( Rhythm and Blues ). While on the other hand, 38% of the male students

preferred Popular music. In over all review, we found out that there is a same amount of
respondents
( Male and Female ) in the music genre, RNB ( Rhythm and Blue ) and Popular music. Hence,
we

could infer that RNB ( Rhythm and Blue ) and Popular music are the most preferred music genre
of

100 students of IMSHS S.Y. 2010-2011.

On the second problem, 42% of the respondents ( Male and female ) has
said

that they listen to music during their free time. Where, 42% of those who answer B are male and

another 42% from female.

On the third problem, 54% of the Male respondent said that they listen to

music to be entertained. While 58% of the Female respondent choose the same answer. We could
infer

that Female students whose answer is A is 4% more than Male students who choose the same
answer.

In other words, there are more Female students who used to listen music to be entertained than in

male students.

For the fourth and the last problem, we could infer that there is a greater
no. of

male students who said that listening to music gives them inspiration than those female students
who

choose the same answer.

Discussions:
In the study, we found out that RNB ( Rhythm and Blue ) and Popular
Music

are the preferred music genre of the students of IMSHS for the S.Y. 2010-2011. This result could

explained by several instances.

We all know that our country is open to foreign influences. The example
of this

is the spreading of Korean Drama and Music also known as K-pop ( Korean Popular Music ). It
has

been so popular to teenagers due to is modern styles and concepts. In fact, although they couldn't

understand the lyrics and the message of the music, they always keep on researching its lyrics.

Another reason why do RNB and Popular music is the preferred music
genre of

the students of IMSHS is because of modernization. If you notice, RNB and Popular music has
the

same characteristic, it promotes the modern concept of delivering music to listeners. RNB and
Popular

Music uses the same instruments which were modern or a product of modern technology.
Example of

this instruments were synthesizers, amplifiers, electrical piano/ organ and many more. And one
of the

good characteristics of this two type of music genre is while singers are emotionally engaged
with the

lyrics, often intensely so, they remain cool, relaxed, and in control unlike Heavy metal rock
music

which is being delivered by outrageous growls and screams.

Recommendation:
Every country has different culture that we need to preserve for the next

generation. One way of determining a country's culture is by determining the music of that
particular

country. Modernization is not bad for each one of us, but, it isn't be good also if our old

traditions would be all forgotten because of modernization. Among other things, we should
ought to

focus on our own culture. Let us patronize the one to which originated to us.
