 The Great & Holy Feast of the Annunciation

When the All-Holy Virgin Mary completed the fourteenth anniversary Her
birth and was entering Her fifteenth year, having spent eleven years
serving God in His Holy Temple of Jerusalem, according to Hebrew
Law, She could no longer remain there but was required be Betrothed
and enter into Holy Matrimony.
However, our All Holy Lady had taken a Most Sacred Vow of Chastity since
her early childhood, dedicating her entire life – body and soul – to the
Service of Almighty God.
Her aged parents were long since reposed in peace so, according to the
Will of God, St Zacharias the High Priest (WHO WAS MARRIED TO ST ELIZABETH, HER
MOTHER’S SISTER AND WHO BECAME THE FATHER OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST AND FORERUNNER TO CHRIST)
in agreement with all the other Priests, requested twelve of the most
Righteous and elderly, widowed men from the Tribe of David, to hand
over their staffs, which were then placed in the Holy of Holies for 40
days. When no Divine Sign seemed apparent, one by one they were
returned to their owners, except for the very last one.
It belonged to an 80 year old and Most Righteous relative of the Blessed
Virgin - St Joseph the Carpenter, who had been married to Salome,
another sister of St Anna. As soon as he touched it, his carved staff
suddenly bloomed with pure white blossoms, which was obviously a
Divine Sign of approval and as the chosen Holy, Righteous and legal
Guardian and Protector of the young Virgin and later, the Christ Child,
St Joseph became known as “St Joseph the Betrothed.”
The All-Holy Virgin Mary continued her Sacred Life as she had done in the
Temple of Solomon in the safety of the home of St Joseph, together
with her companion Virgins (who had also taken Vows of Chastity),
occupying her time by studying Sacred Scripture, by constant Prayer
and Contemplation of Godly Thoughts, by regular Fasting, and with
various household duties and fine needlework. She rarely went
anywhere outside the precincts of the house for she never concerned
herself with worldly matters.
She spoke only when necessary, but She enjoyed a good relationship with
all the children of St Joseph and the late St Salome (Her cousins) who
were probably much older than Her. (HER COUSINS WERE LATER REFERRED TO AS THE
“BROTHERS AND SISTERS” OF CHRIST, SINCE, ACCORDING TO HEBREW LAW - DUE TO HER LEGAL BETROTHAL
TO THEIR ELDERLY FATHER - THEY WERE OUR BLESSED LADY THEOTOKOS’ STEP-CHILDREN.)
According to the Will of God, Archangel Gabriel appeared before the All-
Pure Virgin while She was reading the Holy Book of St Isaiah, the Holy
Prophet, and was contemplating his Great Prophecy: "Behold, the
Virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son!" (ISAIAH 7:13).
In all his Angelic Brightness he greeted Her: "Rejoice, O Full of Grace!
The Lord is with Thee!" and with the Divine Annunciation, and the
Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Her, the Salvation of all mankind
and the Restoration of Creation began.
The Angelic Greeting and the Annunciation of our New Covenant with God
signified the Greatest Eternal Joy for all Creation! And as such, this
Wonderful Feast is not merely a great Feast but truly the Most Joyful
Holy Feast of all as well!
St Athanasios was asked: "How is it that the Son is equal to the Father?" He answered,
"Just as there are two eyes but one sight." To this we can add: just as there are
two ears but one hearing. The same is with all three Divine Hypostases: just as
there are three candles but one and the same light.
