Global Information Services (GIS) is an in-house IT service provider to all departments
of Tata Steel. The department is entrusted with the responsibility of assessing customer
requirements, architecting IT Solutions, and delivering IT services to Tata Steel. GIS is also
responsible for supporting the Information Management process which is one of Tata Steel¶s
key business processes. GIS has committed itself to create business value for its customers
and aspires to take Tata Steel to new levels of excellence through E-transformation.

Campus Network: The network has Gigabit Ethernet as GIS backbone spans across 40 km optical
Fibres and covers more than 120 works locations and offices spanning across 20 sq. km
The network is divided into three layers:

Core Switches: There are two Cisco Catalyst Core switches 6509 being used-one at GIS and the other
in the office of GM, Works.

Distribution Switches: There are Cisco Catalyst 3512, 3524, 3548 Distribution switches that provide
connectivity between core and access switches.

Access Switches: There are Cisco Catalyst 2950 switches that provide connectivity to hosts.

A RAS dialup: For accessing the network from home locations, residential users dial up to theRAS
via Tata Steel telephone network. At the moment there are eight numbers which can be dialled to each
of which has 8 ports thus supporting up to 64 residential users at any moment.

A Remote Offices: The remote office users are connected via Wide Area Network that comprises of
18 Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) and 43 Virtual Private Network (VPN).
A Mobile Users: Mobile Users are connected via VPN Dial-up.
A Internet service Provider: Internet service at 6 Mbps is provided by two ISPs ± Tata ISP and Sify.
A OSS Connectivity: OSS Connectivity to Singapore is provided for On-Line SAP support and
training via IPSEC VPN.
