According to M.J. Jucious, “The field of HRM involves Planning, Organizing, Directing
and Controlling functions of procuring, developing, maintaining and utilizing a labor
force.”
According to Mathis and Jackson, “HRM is the effective use of Human resources in and
organization through the management of people related activities.”
Objective of HRM: The needs and desires of the employers and employees have been
rapidly changing over the decades for various practical reasons. Following objectives are
important. With the fulfillments, of these objectives HRM can be successful.
1. Resourcing: HRM aims at identifying the right quality, type and number of employees.
Thus it helps and organization to obtain and retain skilled, committed and well-motivated
workforce so that its strategic and operational goals are fulfilled.
The above mentioned objectives should ultimately lead to employee satisfaction and
fulfillment.
Principles of HRM: Among the approaches such as traditional approach, scientific
approach, human resource approach; human resource approach is the latest approach to
manage people at work. A number of principles provide the basis for a human resource
approach.
1. Scientific selection: Putting right man in the right place by a careful program of
selection procedure and placement to make sure that the new recruit is physically,
mentally and psychologically fit for the job to be performed. This is needed for the new
employee to develop and grow.
2. Policies: Policies and programs must be prepared and practiced that satisfy both the
economic and emotional needs of employees.
3. Training: Training the new recruits for developing technical competence to perform so
that they can discharge their duties and responsibilities efficiently.
6. Balance: Human resource policies and programs must be implemented with the goal of
balancing the needs and requirements both the organization and the employees.
7. Dignity: Every job and every jobholder must be treated with dignity and respect.
Functions of HRM
Human resource function refers to those tasks and duties performed in both large and
small organization to provide for and co-ordinate human resources. Human resource
functions are concerned with a variety of activities that significantly influence all areas of
an organization, and include followings:
