CIV5111F: GROUND IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES COURSE

Introduction:
As more structures are being constructed, it has become increasingly
difficult to find sites with suitable soil properties. The properties at many
sites must be improved by the use of some form of soil improvement
BLOCK COURSE methods. Therefore, it is important for the civil, geotechnical and
16 CREDITS transportation engineers to know the different soil improvement
methods; the degree to which soil properties may be improved; and the
benefits involved. In this way, the engineer can gain knowledge in order
February 21st to 25th, 2011 to design ground improvement projects as well as to advise the client
regarding value engineering to save cost and obtain maximum benefits
for the specific project.
Times: 09h00 to 17h00
Course Aims:
This course will introduce participants to the concepts underpinning a
range of ground improvements and soil remediation techniques and an
appreciation of how these techniques are applied in practice.

Venue Course outcomes:

To gain an understanding of the concepts behind a range of

Civil Engineering Dept Describe advantages, disadvantages, and limitations for each

Upper Campus Ability to identify appropriate techniques for a range of ground

Locate criteria to determine the applicability of each ground
improvement method for a specific project and soil condition
under consideration.

Registration
Mechanical methods (compaction, explosives, vibrofloation,
vibroreplacement);
By 14th February 2011 Hydraulic methods (groundwater lowering, preloading,
electroosmosis);
Physical/chemical methods (admixtures, grouting, freezing);
Inclusions (geosynthetics, reinforcements);
Soil remediation techniques.
