AFRICAN DAISY ORANGE

African daisies are one of the loveliest garden plants. Selected forms of
African daisies are available in a variety of shades such as orange, cream,
yellow and salmon. The striking daisy shaped flowers attract butterflies
into the garden. Bees love this plant as they collect the nectar from the
flowers. African daisy is an annual that grows up to 1 ft tall. The leaves
are light green when mature with shallowly lobed margins. They are
slender, spoon-shaped, reaching up to 8 cm long. The stems are reddish in
colour and are often covered by the masses of leaves around them.
African daisy is a particularly attractive species of the genus
Dimorphotheca, with remarkably big orange flowers that have orange
centres. They need full sun to open and they always face the sun. Around
the centre at the bottom of the petals is a narrow, greenish mauve ring.
The flowering time is mid-winter to mid-autumn. The flowers are up to 8
cm across and are borne singularly at the tip of each branch.
Dimorpotheca = Greek dis (twice) + morphe (shape) + theka (a fruit),
referring to the two different kinds of seeds produced by the ray and the
disc flowers.
AMAZON BLUE

Amazon Blue is a free branching, spreading, small shrub with bluish
mauve flowers with a white eye. Each flower has two conspicuous petals.
Leaves are very fragrant with a smell resembling pine scent. It prefers
acid soil. Amazon Blue is native to South America. In Indian climate it is
an evergreen shrub that blooms most of the year.
BEACH SUNFLOWER

Beach Sunflower is the flower which is more commonly seen in home


gardens in cities. It should be distinguished from the real Sunflower,
which is a larger plant, with larger flowers. Beach Sunflower is an erect
or a spreading perennial that can grow up to 3-4 ft tall. It has attractive,
small sunflower-like flower heads which are borne throughout the year.
These showy flowers have 10 to 20, pale yellow rays that encircle a
purplish-brown disk that is ½ to 1 inch wide. Different species of
butterflies are attracted to these charming flowers. The 3-inch-wide
flowers of this plant are followed by small seeds that readily germinate to
produce plantlets. The Beach Sunflower has small, dark green, triangular
or heart-shaped leaves that are irregularly lobed and toothed. These
glossy leaves are roughly pubescent and attain a length of 4 inches.
BRAZILIAN BUTTON FLOWER

Called Brazilian Button Flower, this bushy perennial is native to Brazil.


Coming into bloom in a rather short period from seed, the lavender-blue,
button flowers to 1-1/4 inches are long lasting and borne continually until
frost. The flowers resemble tiny Canadian thistle flowers. The refreshing
resinous pineapple scented foliage would be a good candidate for wreaths
or potpourri. The plant mounds 2' high to 3' across. It will occasionally
reseed itself.

CALENDULA

Genda • Punjabi: Gulsarfi
Botanical name: Calendula officinalis Family: Asteraceae (Sunflower

Calendulas are a very prolific, easy to grow annual flower. Also known as
"Pot Marigolds", these bright yellow and orange flowers are a familiar
sight in cottage and country gardens. The petals have a pungent, spicy
flavor and the leaves have a bitter aftertaste. Calendula are grown from
seeds. Sow seeds early in the season and cover lightly with 1/4" of garden
soil. They germinate easily and will grow quickly, producing their first of
a continual display of blooms by mid-summer. Calendula like rich, well
drained soil, but are very tolerant of average to slightly poor soils.

GROUND ORCHID

Ground orchid, native of Southeastern Asia to the Philippines, is the
common species of Orchid which blooms round the year. This easily
grown terrestrial herb has pretty, arching broad leaves with prominent
parallel veins and a few or large cluster of small flowers at the end of a
long stalk as tall as 1 metre arising from a basal leaf axil. The flowers are
seen from the more common purple to white, yellow, peach, pink and
magenta shades. and The leaves emerge from round pseudo bulbs that
become increasingly multiple and larger as the orchid matures. Ground
orchids can be grown as potted plants and also do well in beds and
borders.

KAMINI

Kamini flowers have an aromatic orange-like fragrance. Grows best in


lime soils. Native to India, Kamini is a large, multi-trunked shrub, but can
grow to become a small tree. The evergreen leaflets are dark green and
pinnately compound with three to nine leaflets arranged alternately along
the spine. The dark green leaves make a dramatic backdrop for the highly
fragrant cream colored flowers. The shrub blooms most of the year. The
flowers are followed by small oval red fruits with one or two seeds. The
shrub is usually propagated from seed.

PRETTY SPIREA

Pretty Spiraea is a small to medium shrub, native to the Himalayas. From


the flowers, it might be confused with Spiraea japonica, but the reddish
stems of this rather tall-growing species are of interest, and render the
plant distinct. Leaves ovate, acute, and serrated, and tomentose beneath.
Flowers in spreading corymbs of a very beautiful rose colour. Flowering:
May-June.

RAIN LILY WHITE

A native of the warmer parts of America, Fairy Lily is a half-hardy


bulbous plant bearing linear, hollow, strap-shaped or grass-like leaves.
The solitary flowers consisting of 6 pointed petals, borne on a short scape
are delicate and flourish throughout the rainy season, especially after
heavy showers. A good garden soil is suitable and a sunny or semi-shady
environment. It is suitable for planting in pots, beds and clumps. An
exceedingly delightful effect can be produced by planting the various
species in the grass. The splashing arrays of flowers in different hues
looks fascinating. It is useful as a border plant in front of the shrubberies
and can decorate windows when in shallow pots or bowls. The
propagation is by bulbs.
ROSE

Roses are a group of herbaceous shrubs found in temperate regions


throughout both hemispheres The birthplace of the cultivated Rose was
probably Northern Persia, on the Caspian, or Faristan on the Gulf of
Persia. Rose is considered by many as the most beautiful of all flowers.
There are varieties which have an extremely pleasant scent. There are
other varieties which do not have much smell. It is available in every
colour except blue and true black. In the 19th century old scented roses
were used to make jelly. The red rose is the symbol of England and is
worn on St George's Day. It is also the symbol of love and is hugely
popular on St Valentine's Day, when roses make up the largest proportion
of the money spent on flowers. Rose has always featured strongly
throughout history.
