Tareq and Michaele Salahi re-
leased a statement this morning
that says two things: a) Michaele
is seeking help from Dr. Drew
Pinsky for “private pains and
personal struggles she endured”
following her alleged crashing of
President Barack Obama’s first
White House state dinner and
b) she has released a new Iphone
app that lets users “Crash any
party with Michaele.”
The statement almost, semi,
sort of confirms that Michaele
is set to appear on Dr. Drew
Pinsky’s VH1 reality show Celeb-
rity Rehab. After stating “we are
unable to discuss any Television
Shows/projects in development”
it proceeds to do just that:

Town council meeting reveals promotions, a resignation, and a $2.8 million dollar budget.

The Middletown Town Coun-
cil met on Monday, March 14,
2011, for its monthly meeting. All
members were present. Mayor
Mark Brown opened the meet-
ing with a moment of silence for
those suffering in Japan.
Linda Shephard opened the
Citizens’ Comment portion of the
meeting. Ms. Shephard asked the
town to:
1. add a “Committee for Econom-
ic Development” to market the
town to tourists and businesses;
2. have individuals answer the
phone in Town Hall, instead of
using the antiquated phone sys-
tem;
3. give permission to raise funds

to water the plants as much as
needed during the summer. The
council noted that the Garden
Club volunteers are covered by
the town’s insurance policy when
driving the town truck to water
plants.
Mayor Brown asked the Garden
Club if they could analyze the

where new trees are needed. The
club representatives agreed.

BBB tax tips

Crunching numbers while
stooped over a pile of receipts,
forms and coffee gone cold is
a scene that most people are
familiar with this time of year.
It is no wonder that we dread
and procrastinate the work of
having to reconcile income,
expenses and taxes.
With the mid-April dead-
line fast approaching, it’s time
to start the tax filing process
if you have not already do so.
This tax season, if you are plan-
ning to get assistance from a
tax preparer or even if you’re
planning to do the leg work
yourself, the Better Business
Bureau (BBB), along with the
Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
recommend following these
top ten tax filing tips.
1. Start gathering your re-
cords: Round up any docu-
ments or forms you’ll need
when filing your taxes: re-
ceipts, canceled checks and
other documents that support
income or deductions you’re
claiming on your return.
2. Be on the lookout: W-2s
and 1099s should have arrived
by now and you’ll need these to
file your tax return.
3. Use Free File: Let Free
File do the hard work for you
with brand-name tax software
or online forms. Everyone can
find an option to prepare their
tax return and e-file it for free.
If you made $58,000 or less,
you qualify for free tax soft-
ware that is offered through
a private-public partnership
with manufacturers. If you
made more or are comfortable
preparing your own tax return,
there’s Free File Fillable Forms,
the electronic versions of IRS
paper forms available online at
www.irs.gov.
4. Try IRS e-file: After 21
years, IRS e-file has become
the safe, easy and most com-
mon way to file a tax return.
According to the IRS, 70 per-
cent of taxpayers used IRS
e-file. Starting in 2011, many
tax preparers will be required
to use e-file and will explain
your filing options to you. This
is your chance to give it a try.
IRS e-file is approaching 1 bil-
lion returns processed safely
and securely. If you owe taxes,
you have payment options to
file immediately and pay by the
tax deadline. Best of all, com-

and you can get your refund in
as few as 10 days.
5. Consider other filing op-
tions: There are many different
options for filing your tax re-
turn. You can prepare it your-
self or go to a tax preparer. You
may be eligible for free face-

best suits your needs.

Mazzuca challenges leaders to “reintroduce scouting in America”

On Saturday evening, March
12, Stephens City was honored
by the presence of Bob Maz-
zuca, the Chief Scout Executive
of the Boy Scouts of America.
He was here to celebrate 101
years of scouting in America.
He was also here to challenge
scout council officers and pack
and troop leaders to “Reintro-
duce scouting in America.” He
also wanted their help in hon-
oring the dedicated scout vol-
unteers who were recognized
at the 83rd annual dinner for
the Shenandoah Area Council,
which was held at Sherando
High School Saturday evening.
Bob Mazzuca has certainly
worked his way to the top in
scouting and truly deserves the
distinction of being the Chief
Scout Executive. Growing up in
California, he received the high-
est rank a Boy Scout can achieve
– Eagle Scout. Through scout-
ing, Mazzuca learned skills that
would benefit him later on in
college and his career. As Chief
Scout Executive, Mazzuca is
now responsible for leading an

FCPS and Health Department
offering immunizations to
rising sixth grader
Frederick County Public Schools
is again partnering with the Lord
Fairfax Health District to offer
tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis
(Tdap) booster vaccinations
to rising sixth grade students.
On March 22, 23 and 24, fifth
grade students attending each of
Frederick County’s 11 elementary
schools will have the opportunity
to receive their Tdap booster free
of charge. Students will only be
able to receive the vaccination if
their parents have provided the
school with written permission.
Since 2006, all rising sixth grade
students have been required
to have the Tdap booster. If
the student has had a tetanus-
containing vaccine within the last
five years (after August 2006), the
booster isn’t necessary. Some

for religious or medical reasons.

Department of Health, the Tdap
vaccine protects against tetanus,
diphtheria and pertussis. Tetanus,
also called lockjaw, causes painful
tightening of muscles throughout
the body. It can lead to “locking”
of the jaw, making it difficult for
the sick person to open his or her
mouth or swallow. Diphtheria
is a serious disease that causes
a thick covering in the back
of the throat and can lead to
breathing problems, paralysis,
heart failure, and even death.
Pertussis, also called whooping
cough, causes coughing spells
so bad that it is often hard to
eat, drink, or breathe. Children
typically receive the pertussis
vaccine at infancy. However, over
time their immunity wanes. The
Tdap vaccine boosts immunity
in persons 10 years of age and
older and is aimed at helping
eliminate pertussis outbreaks.

Coordinator of Health Services
Pam Unhoch says there are
certain immunizations that are
required for a child to attend
public schools in Virginia. Parents
are responsible for providing the
documentation which shows
that all required immunizations
have been administered and are
current. By the end of February,
letters will be sent to the parents
of all fifth grade students who
need to receive the Tdap booster
before entering the sixth grade.
Parents need to review their
child’s immunization record and
if the last vaccination was before
August 2006, the student needs
to receive the Tdap booster prior
to the start of school in August.
Specific medical questions should
be referred to the child’s physician.
Sixth grade students who have
not had their vaccination prior
to the first day of school will
be temporarily excluded from

Getting Control
of Your Money
It’s bad enough when you’re suffer-
ing from the effects of the economy,
but it’s even worse when you don’t
know where your money goes. Hav-
ing finances that are out of control can
make a bad situation worse.
The National Foundation for Credit
Counseling has put together some
excellent ideas for reining in your
finances. Here are six of them:
—Get organized. Create a system
for tracking bills that come in, when
they’re due and when you’ve paid
them. This can be as simple as a cal-
endar or ledger where you note pay-
days and dates certain bills should be
mailed. Then, be sure to open every
bill on the day it comes in and write
it down.
—Track your spending for 30 days.
Write down every dime that gets
spent. At the end of the month you’ll
know where your money goes. Then
decide if that’s how you want to spend
your income. Put limits on flexible
spending categories where you know
you can cut back. Then let that new
budget be your guideline until there
is a change in circumstance, perhaps
a raise at work or a credit card that is
paid off. Review and adjust the budget
at that time.
—Don’t spend more than you make.
If you’ve discovered that you have a
problem with credit cards, leave them
at home. (You’ll spend 20 percent less
without the cards in your pocket.)
—Pretend that you don’t have over-
draft on your checking account. Lean-
ing on the available money promotes
bad spending habits. Open your bank
statement the day it comes in and rec-
oncile it within a few days. You should
be able to easily identify each item
just by the amount of each check and
will know immediately if something is
amiss. Note in your checkbook every
transaction, including ATM with-
drawals and deposits. Call your bank
at the middle of the month and use the
auto-teller to learn which checks have
cleared.
—Start working on your credit. If it’s
not perfect, work at fixing it. Begin by
sending for a free copy of your credit
report for each of the three bureaus.
Learn which dings on your report are
hurting you the most.
—Save something. Put a specific
amount away each month, paying
yourself as you would a creditor.
