Homework #5: Due Thursday, October 11.

1. An ideal gas at a given state expands to a fixed final volume first at constant pressure and
then at constant temperature. For which case is the work done greater?

2. A mass of 5 kg of saturated water vapor at 300 kPa is heated at constant pressure until the
temperature reaches 200 oC. Calculate the work done by the steam during this process.

10
3. The equation of state of a gas is given as v( P + ) = R u T where the units of v are
v2
m3/kmol the units of P are kPa, and the units of T are degrees Kelvin. Now 0.5 kmol of
this gas is expanded in a quasi-equilibrium process from 2 to 4 m3 at a constant
temperature of 300K. Determine

a. The units of the quantity 10 in the formula

b. The work done in the isothermal expansion

4. Complete the table below using the 1st Law relation

Q (kJ) W (kJ) E1 (kJ) E2 (kJ) m (kg) e2-e1 (kJ/kg)

280 1020 860 3
-350 130 550 5
260 300 2 -150
300 750 500 1
-200 300 2 -100

5. A piston-cylinder device contains 5 kg refrigerant, R-134a, at 800 kPa and 70 oC. The
refrigerant is cooled at constant pressure until it exists as a liquid at 15 oC. Determine the
amount of heat loss and show the process on a T-v diagram with respect to saturation
lines.
6. Two tanks (A and B) are separated by a partition. Initially tank A contains 2 kg steam at
1 MPa and 300 oC while tank B contains 3 kg saturated liquid-vapor mixture of water at
150 oC and a vapor mass fraction of 50 percent. Now the partition is removed and the
two sides mix until the system is in equilibrium with a uniform pressure of 300 kPa.

a. Find the temperature and quality of the steam (if saturated) at the final state
b. The amount of heat lost from the tanks

7. A room 4m x 5m x 6m is to be heated by an electric resistance heater. It is desired that

the resistance heater be able to raise the air temperature in the room from 7 to 23 oC in 15
minutes. Assuming no heat losses from the room and an atmospheric pressure of 100 kPa,
determine the required power of the resistance heater. Assume specific heats are constant
at room temperature (300K).

8. A piston-cylinder device whose piston is resting on a set of stops contains 0.5 kg of

helium gas at 100 kPa and 25 oC. The mass of the piston is such that 500 kPa pressure is
required to raise it. How much heat must be transferred to the helium before the piston
starts rising?

9. An 1,800-watt electric resistance heating element is immersed in 40 kg of water initially

at 20 oC. Determine how long it will take for this heater to raise the water temperature to
80 oC.
