23rd January, 2011 (Sunday) 364 inmates and 48 caretakers from 19 homes were invited by The
Kiwanis Club of Johor Bahru to a sumptuous meal at the Grand Straits Garden, Johor Bahru.
This is an annual affair in which the club brings cheer to senior citizens from homes in and
around JB by inviting them to a luncheon in conjunction with Chinese New Year. This is a one-
stop event where well wishers of Johor Bahru who wish to donate towards these inmates, turned
up with red packets and gifts. The senior citizens were entertained by Laughter Yoga leaders
from the Johor Bahru Happy and Joyous Club and Edmund Dass who performed with a
repertoire of songs. There were also 3 local and 9 China artistes from the 2000 Disco, Taman
Pelangi who entertained the inmates. Magic Cut Studio Hair Stylists, a local hair salon, provided
hair stylists who cropped the inmates¶ hair for free. The crowd was ecstatic with the appearance
of the God of Prosperity. The arrival of the guest of honour, Datuk Ng See Tiong, member of
the Dewan Undangan Negeri of Kawasan Parit Yaani, was heralded by a lion dance troupe. The
Organising Chairperson was Ms Serena Quek and she thanked all the well wishers and sponsors
who helped make the occasion a success. The oldest inmate who turned up at the function was

Josephin Mary Paul, the president of the Humane Touch Animal Welfare Society is a good
samaritan who established a home for abandoned dogs 5 years ago in Plentong. Before that, she
was at another shelter which she had built at a cost of RM 70,000. The owner of the land, Mr.
Chong, wanted to sell the land and wanted her to vacate the place. Her dogs were eventually
evicted, her shelter was bulldozed to the ground and in the process, 5 dogs were killed. She had
a lawyer to represent her but could not afford to continue to pursue this case. Together with her
uncle Rufus Eabenazar and her sister, they started the present shelter for abandoned dogs on a
piece of land which she gets to use on an annual basis. Her shelter takes care of 60 dogs and in
her own house in Taman Daya, she also takes care of 20 cats. When interviewed, the canine
lover with a big heart, said that she needs a lot of financial support from the public. She needs
RM 2,000 per month for food and RM 1,000 for petrol and utilities. In addition, she needs RM
3,000 for medicine for the dogs. When asked if members of the public assist her, she replied that
the members of her society help her. Currently, there are 3 restaurants in Taman Daya which
donate left-over food to her. The Sathya Sai Council, Johor Bahru arranges for the dogs to be
vaccinated every three months and it plans to build an open shelter in the one acre land next to

³Mari Kita Membaca (MKM)´ is a project set by a group of concerned Malaysians to help out
less fortunate children in rural area of Malaysia by providing books and setting up libraries in
rural villages of Orang Asli (indigenous people living in Malaysia). As to fund their activities,
the group recently organized a book sale in a flea market in Holland Village, Singapore. ³Using
the money raised from the sale, we will be able to provide more books to more villages of Orang
Asli in Malaysia´, said Rusaslina Idrus, a Malaysian anthropologist, currently a visiting fellow
at a research institute in Singapore who received her PhD training in Social Anthropology from
Harvard University. Her research focuses on indigenous rights in Malaysia. Members of Mari
Kita Membaca , Shi Hsia and Guan Sing, who were present at the stall, were glad to see friends
and fellow students from National University of Singapore supported the book sale. ³We
manage to make around S$400 dollars from the sale and would like to thank our friends and
families for their support´, said Shi-Hsia. MKM is planning to organize more events like these

Jaya, Skudai, Johor Bahru.
Tetapi segala usaha
mereka sia-sia kerana keretakan dialami menjadi amat serius sehinggakan struktur tetulang
rumah pangsa Taman Jaya, Skudai inginkan kerajaan negeri memberikan kata putus secepat

Students taking school buses to SM Taman Molek risk their lives everyday as they cross the
haphazard road to get to school. Irresponsible buses indiscriminatedly drop them wherever they
find convenient. These students then criss-cross cars, buses and motorcycles to get to the
entrance. There has been no solution forth coming despite refering this matter to the school
through the Parents Teachers Association. Relevant authorities must be proactive in solving the
traffic problem before anything serious happens. Video by Christine Leong, Citizen Journalist
