The pavement markings shall be painted on the road to the dimensions and in the locations as shown
on the drawings or as directed by the Engineer.
The Contractor shall set out the markings and obtain the Engineer’s approval before commencing the
work.

1. MATERIAL

The material used shall conform to the BS Specification for Road Marking Materials (Superimposed
type) BS 3262, (Part 1) 1989 except where modified in this specification. Ballotini shall be in
accordance with BS 6088, 1981.

The road marking material shall consist of light coloured aggregate, pigment and extender, bound
together with hard wearing resins, plasticised with oil as necessary in approximately the following
proportions by weight:

- Aggregate: The aggregate shall consists of light colours silica sand, calcite, quartz, calcined flint,
or other approved aggregate.

- Pigment and Extender:Pigment and Extender: For white markings, pigment shall be titanium
dioxide, to give a minimum luminance factor conforming to British standards.
For yellow marking, the pigment shall be lead chromate, which is colour stable at high
temperatures.

- Binder:Binder shall be predominately a synthetic hydrocarbon resins plasticised with mineral oil.

The grading of various ingredients shall be such that the final product, when in a molten state, can be
painted on the surface in accordance with BS 3262:1989.

2. APPLICATION OF PAVEMENT MARKING

The road surface shall be dry and free of loose detritus mud or other extraneous matter.
Where old paint or thermoplastic material are present, the manufacturer shall be consulted for the
suitability of the surface before painting.
A tack coat should not be necessary when the plastic is applied to the carriageways.
Where it is considered necessary to use a tack coat, this shall be rubberized type recommended by the
manufacturer of the plastic.

The material shall be laid in intermittent lines or continuous lines as directed by the Engineer.
The finished lines shall be free from "raggedness’s" on sides and ends and be in true plane with the
general alignment of the carriageway.
The upper surface of the lines shall be level uniform and free from streaks. The composition shall
posses an approximate specific gravity of 2.0. The compound shall have an open flash point exceeding
230oC.

A 212B MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS OF SIGN PANELS:

Sign Panels: The traffic sign panel for guide and regulatory signs shall be made of aluminium and for
regulatory sign shall be made of steel, as detailed in Section 07 .

mineral dust, free of foreign matter in accordance with AASHTO M-17 and T-219.
Hydrated lime in accordance with ASTM C-50.

G. Seal Coat: Asphalt Institute Manual MS-4, Sand type.

2.2 ASPHALT PAVING MIX:

A. Use dry materials to avoid foaming. Mix uniformly.

B. Base Course: 3.5 to 5 percent of asphalt cement by weight in mixture.

Air voids 3 to 8 percent or as agreed with Engineer.

C. Asphalt Binder Levelling Course: 4.5 to 6.5 percent of asphalt cement by weight in
mixture. Air voids 3 to 8 percent or as agreed with Engineer.

D. Wearing Course: 5.5 to 7.5 percent of asphalt cement by weight in mixture. Air voids 3
percent minimum gradation includes hydrated lime or as agreed with Engineer.

2.3 TRAFFIC MARKING AND SIGNS

White or yellow thermoplastic, reflective paint on bituminous or cement concrete pavement to

be applied by mechanical means.

A. Material requirements for markings:

1. Aggregate: The aggregate shall consists of light colours silica sand, calcite,
quartz, calcined flint, or other approved aggregate.

2. Pigment and Extender: For white markings, pigment shall be titanium dioxide,
to give a minimum luminance factor conforming to British standards.

For yellow marking, the pigment shall be lead chromate, which is colour stable
at high temperatures.

The extender shall be calcium carbonate prepared from natural chalk silica
flour.

3. Binder: Binder shall be predominately a synthetic hydrocarbon resins

plasticised with mineral oil.

B. Material requirements of Sign Panels:

Sign Panels: The traffic sign panel for guide signs shall be made of aluminium and for
regulatory sign shall be made of steel, as detailed in ADM General Specification for
