WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT

UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL, PANJAB UNIVERSITY, CHANDIGARH

PROGRAM: MBA (General & Bio-tech) - 1st SEMESTER
COURSE: QUANTITATIVE METHODS AND MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES
SESSION: JULY-NOVEMBER, 2010
FACULTY: RUPINDER KAUR

Attempt any five: (1 marks each)

UNIT I
Q.1 Answer the questions in short:
(a)Why averages are called as measure of central value?
(b)Under what circumstances would it be appropriate to use mean, median, mode,
harmonic mean and geometric mean? Discuss
(c)Write a formula to show the relationship between mean, median and mode?
(d)What is dispersion? What is the need of studying dispersion?
(e)What is coefficient of variation? What purpose does it serves?
(f)Differentiate between standard deviation and mean deviation?

Q.2(a) The annual rates of growth of an economy over the last 5 years were 1.5, 2.7, 3.0, 4.5
and 6.2 percent respectively. What is the compound rate of growth per annum of the
economy for the period?
(b)If the values of mean and standard deviation of the following frequency distribution
(obtained by step deviation method) are 135.3 & 9.6 respectively. Determine the actual
class intervals?
d -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 Total
f 2 5 8 18 22 13 8 4 80

Q.3(a) Talent ltd. a Bollywood casting company is selecting a group of extras for a movie.
The ages of the first 20 men to be interviewed are
50 56 55 49 52 57 56 57 56 59 54 55 61 60 51 59 62 52 54 49
The director of the movie wants men where ages are fairly tightly grouped around 55
years. Being a statistics buff of sorts, the director suggests that a standard deviation of 3
years would be acceptable. Does this group of extras qualify?

1
(b) The weekly sales of two products A and B were recorded as given below:
Product A 59 75 27 63 27 28 56
Product B 150 200 125 310 330 250 225
Find out which of two shows greater fluctuations in sales.

UNIT II
Q.4 Write short notes on:
(a)Point and interval estimates
(b)Central limit theorem
(c)Null and Alternative hypothesis
(d)One tailed and two tailed test
(e)Critical region and acceptance region

Q.5 Point out the difference between sample survey and census survey. Explain different
methods of sampling? What are sampling and non sampling errors?

Q.6(a)Mary Bartel, an auditor for a large credit card company, knows that, on average, the
monthly balance of any given customer is $112 and standard deviation is $56. If Mary
audits 50 randomly selected accounts, what is the probability that the sample average
monthly balance is (a) below $100 (b) between $100 & $130?
(b)Define the concept of sampling distribution and standard error. Find the mean and
variance of sampling distribution of sample mean?

Q.7(a)From a population of 540, a sample of 60 individuals is taken. From this sample, the
mean is found to be 6.2 and standard deviation 1.368. Find estimated standard error of
mean and Construct a 96 percent confidence interval for the mean?
(b)Dr. Benjamin, a noted social psychologist, survey 150 top executives and found that
42 percent of them were unable to add fractions correctly. Estimate the standard error of
proportion and Construct a 99 percent confidence interval for true proportion of top
executives who cannot correctly add fractions?

Q.8(a)Random samples of sizes 400 and 500 have means 10.9 and 11.5 respectively. Can
the samples be regarded as drawn from the same population of variance 25?
(b)A hospital uses large quantities of packaged doses of a particular drug. The individual
dose of this drug is 100cc. The hospital has purchased its requirement of this drug and

2
knows that the population standard deviation is 2cc. The hospital inspects 50 doses of
this drug at random from very large shipment and finds mean of these doses to be
99.75cc. If the hospital sets a 0.10 significance level and wants to take the decision of
acceptance or rejection of drugs with such levels of doses. What should it do?

Q.9(a)Two independent samples of 8 and 7 items gave the following values:

Sample A: 9 11 13 11 15 9 12 14
Sample B: 10 12 10 14 9 8 10
Examine whether the difference between the means of the two samples is significant at
5 percent significance level?
(b)In a random sample of 500 persons belonging to urban area 200 are found to be
commuters of public transport. In another sample of 400 persons belonging to rural area
200 are found to be commuters of public transport. Discuss whether data reveal a
significant difference between urban and rural area so far as the proportion of
commuters of public transport is concerned at 1% level of significance.

Q.10(a)The following results were obtained when two set of items were subjected to two
different treatment X and Y, to enhance their strength.
Treatment X was applied on 400 items and 80 were found to have gained in strength.
Treatment Y was applied on 400 items and 20 were found to have gained in strength.
Is treatment Y superior to treatment X?
(b)The demand for a particular spare part in a factory was found to vary from day to day.
In a sample study, the following information was obtained:
Days: Mon. Tues. Wednes. Thurs. Fri. Satur.
No. of parts demanded: 1124 1125 1110 1120 1126 1115
Test the hypothesis that the number of parts demanded does not depend on the day of
the week. (Table value of chi-square for 5 d.f. at 5% sig. level is 11.07)
