BASIC SKILLS
Before competing at the varsity level, the defensive back must be able to:
Establish a sound hit position and stance.
Consistently execute backwards running technique.
Consistently cover the assigned receiver using man-coverage technique.
Consistently cover assigned zone-coverage area and react to the receiver once
the ball is thrown.
Defeat blocker and force the play using the correct technique.
React on a correct pursuit path.
Execute solid tackling fundamentals.
Learn basic defensive calls (assignment and responsibility).

ADVANCED SKILLS
To succeed at the varsity level, the defensive back must be able to:
Execute basic skills correctly on 9 out of 10 plays.
Determined run and pass responsibility based on the offensive
formation/defensive responsibility.
Limit the pass receiver to 4 catches out of every 10 plays in your area of
responsibility.
Execute correct hand shiver and other avoidance skills.
Recognize and call out all the offensive formations and identify the most
dangerous receiver in your
area of responsibility.
Call out likely plays from opponents offensive formations based on scouting
report.
Execute the correct blitz technique.
Defeat offensive blocker 8 out of every 10 plays.
Force at least 1 turnover or tackle behind the line of scrimmage per game.
