Introduction & Problematic
The early detection and treatment of prevalent eye diseases, particularly Pterygium may have a
significant impact on reducing the incidence of blindness. Pterygium is an eye disease caused by the
encroachment of vascular fibrous tissue on the cornea. The tissue can make your vision blurry if it
grows in the pupil area. Thus, this study engages to develop a computational method for computer-
aided pterygium screening for automatic detection that helps in distinguishing between pterygium
and non-pterygium (normal) based on anterior eye imaging, also called anterior segment imaging. To
achieve this objectively, four main processes will examined as follows: (i) a preprocessing module to
enhance the pterygium tissue; (ii) a segmentation module to differentiate the corneal region and the
pterygium tissue; (iii feature extraction module to extract corneal features using various algorithms) a
and (iv) a classification module to identify the presence or absence of pterygium. The pterygium
screening system will be tested using either one of the two normal eye databases (UBIRIS or MILES)
and either one of the two pterygium databases (Australia Pterygium or Brazil Pterygium). In the end,
the four modules will integrated to produce the medical computer-aided pterygium screening
detection and diagnosis. The experimental results should demonstrate the effectiveness of the
proposed system and show that can differentiate pterygium tissues from normal corneal tissues in
ASPI that help in the clinical assessment.
Problem Statement
How to develop a computational algorithm for a computer-aided pterygium screening system that helps
in the early detection and treatment of pterygium diseases via investigating the use of image
processing and classification approach?
Short-Term Objectives (STO)
The main objective of this project is to develop a computer-aided pterygium screening (CAPS) and
investigates the use of image processing and classification approach with extracted textures from
medial images to detect the lesion examined. To achieve this, STO listed as follows:
To annotate the database that consists of medical eye images with/ without pterygium.
To investigate methods for pterygium tissue enhancement.
To differentiate the corneal region and the pterygium tissue via segmentation approach.
To investigate feature extraction algorithms for indexing purposes.
To identify the presence or absence of pterygium via classification module.
To integrate the four modules for the CAPS system and validate its performance with the state-
of-the-art schemes.
Indicated below are the main steps to be examine and experimented with to accomplish the work
Step 1: Database collection, needs to examine the existing medical dataset with their ground
truth related to the topic.
Step2: Various enhancement and segmentation approaches will be conducted with different
feature extraction techniques to identify the region of interest (ROI) and lesion classes. In the
case of feature extraction, the shape, color, and texture maybe will be used as an image
feature for lesion detection.
Step 3: Various classification algorithms will be experimented with for distinguishing between
pterygium classes. Intensive tests will be conducted among dataset images to assess the
accuracy of the integrated techniques.
Step 4: The performance metrics examined will consider two quantitative evaluation criteria.
Step 5: Develop a CAPS user interface as a prototype system for lesion diagnostic.
