1.1 Objective:
 To be familiar with the components that will be used in this lab and operation of basic logic gates.
 Introduction to Basic Logic Gates and Verification of Truth tables
1.2 Introduction
 Digital devices are basically electronic switches that use two states, or logic levels. TTL and CMOS
are two families of digital circuits. Most commonly, they are powered by a +5 V power supply,
although CMOS is sometimes used with +12 V.
 These are integrated circuits, i.e., IC’s, or “chips.”
 A digital signal is either ON or OFF:
State Other names for the state TT CMOS
ON HI, “1”, True 3.0 – 5.5 V 3.0 – 5.5 V Or 8.5 – 12.5 V
OFF Lo, “0”, False -0.5 – 1.5 V -0.5 – 12.5 V

1.3 Components
• Bread Board • Power Supply • Leads • IC 74xx or 74LSxx
• Switches • Digital Trainer • LED displays

1.4 Procedure
1.4.1 Part-1
a. Familiarize yourself with the following equipment
• Bread Board • Power Supply • Leads • IC 74xx or 74LSxx
• Switches • Digital Trainer • LED displays
b. Pick any 2-input IC that performs a certain logic operation (e.g. 7400 = 2-INPUT-NAND). Place the IC
on the breadboard as shown below, and connect the circuit as follows:

c. + 5V (Vcc) to pin 14
d. 0V (GND) to pin 7
e. Switch 1 (input x) to pin 1
f. Switch 2 (input y) to pin 2
g. Pin 3 (output f) to LED
h. Fill in the following truth table:

i. Answer the following Questions

Q1. What kind of logic operation does this chip perform?

Ans: __________________________________________________________________________

Q2. How many logic gates does this chip contain?

Ans: ________________________________________________________________________

1.4.2 Part-2
j. Construct the truth tables of the following gates. Using IC-sheet given in the appendix, identify the
ICs corresponding to these gates and verify their truth tables practically: In order to save on time,
you can connect more than one gate at a time and then demonstrate it to the lab assistant.

(i) AND gate (iii) NAND gate
