The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is a premier National Profess

ional body established by Act of Parliament to develop and regulate the Professi
on of Company Secretaries.
ICSI imparts training in Company Secretaryship by Distance Learning (by corresp
ondence) enabling students to qualify as Company Secretaries. The Institute prov
ides Course Material for all the subjects at the time of Registration. There is al
so provision for Optional Oral Coaching classes.
Career as a Company Secretary is not only prestigious and financially rewarding
but also carries with it a high level of job satisfaction.
Stages to become a Company Secretary
The student who would like to join the Course after 10+2 has to undergo three st
ages to pursue the Company Secretaries Course i.e.
Foundation Programme
Executive Programme
Professional Programme
In addition, the student has to undergo Practical Training for about 15 months
which a student may opt to start after passing the Executive Programme.
The Student who would like to join the Course after passing the Graduation has t
o undergo two stages of the Company Secretaryship i.e.
Executive Programme
Professional Programme
Besides, the student has to undergo Practical Training for about 15 months.
Foundation Programme which is of eight months duration can be pursued by 10+2 p
ass students of Arts, Science or Commerce stream.
Executive Programme can be pursued by a Graduate of all streams except Fine Arts
.
Professional Programme can be pursued only after clearing the Executive Programm
e of CS Course.
Training: A Student has to undergo 15 months Management Training in Companies sp
onsored by the Institute after passing the Executive or Professional Programme
or under the guidance of a Company Secretary in Practice.
After qualifying Professional Examination and on successful completion of traini
ng a candidate is admitted as an Associate Member of the ICSI and can use the le
tters ACS after his/her name i.e. Associate Company Secretary.
Admission to the CS Course is open throughout the year. Examinations are held t
wice a year in June & December.
Cut off dates for admission to CS course:

sts and services under Central Government.
Self-Employment/Practising Company Secretaries
After obtaining a Certificate of Practice from the Institute, Members of the Inst
itute can go in for Independent Practice.
Every company having a paid-up share capital of Rs. Ten Lakhs or more but less t
han Rs. Five Crores is required to engage the services of a Secretary in Whole-
Time Practice for issue of Compliance Certificate.
Pursuant to Clause 49 of the Listing Agreement, Practising Company Secretaries
have been authorized to issue Certificate regarding compliance of conditions of
Corporate Governance as stipulated in the Clause.

The Institute and its offices maintain the database of the members / students de

€2.The Company Secretaryship Course €
Company Secretaries Course is a professional course conducted in three stages, t
hat is, Foundation Programme, Executive Programme and Professional Programme. CS
Course is by correspondence and the students are provided with study material a
t the time of registration. Students have the option to undergo postal coaching
by submitting response sheets to the various test papers or attend Oral coachin
g classes conducted by the Regional Councils and Chapters of the Institute, Accr
edited Centres & ICSI Empanelled Centres to become eligible to write the examin
ation.
€ Students who have passed 10+2 examination or are appearing in 12th class examin
ation are eligible for admission to Foundation Programme. Graduates are exempted
from Foundation Programme and are eligible for admission to Executive Programme
straight away. Admission is open throughout the year and on-line admission is
also available.
€ Examinations are held in June & December. The CS course offers excellent career

Foundation Programme. Provisional admission is also allowed to a student who has

the CS Foundation Programme is 8 months. Admission is open throughout the year.

nation in the same year and those registered upto 30th September are eligible t
o appear in June examination of next year. There are four papers in the CS Found
ation Programme. Admission fee including postal tuition fee is Rs. 3,600. Found

Graduates in any discipline except Fine Arts, irrespective of percentage or divi
sion of marks or medium of examination are exempted from passing the Foundation
Programme and eligible for direct registration for the Executive Programme. T
he Executive Programme comprises of six papers divided into two modules of three
papers each. Admission is open throughout the year on payment of Rs. 7,000 fo
r Commerce Graduates and Rs. 7750 for non-Commerce Graduates. Students register
ing upto 28th February are eligible to appear in both modules in December examin
ation in the same year and those registered upto 31st August are eligible to ap
pear in both modules in June examination of next year. Students registered upto
31st May are eligible to appear in one module in December examination and those
registered upto 30th November are eligible for appearing in one module in June
examination of next year.

€ 5.€Training requirements €
A student has to undergo 15 month Training in a company or under a Practising Co
mpany Secretary after passing the Executive Programme or Professional Programme.
Students who possess prescribed practical experience can seek partial or total
exemption from Training. Sponsorship for the Training is made by the Institute.
The companies and the Practising Company Secretaries pay stipend during the tra
ining period. In addition every student is required to undergo 15 days Training
in a specialized agency and 15 days Secretarial Modular Training Programme.
A person becomes eligible for admission as Associate Member of the Institute on
successful completion of Training and passing of Professional Programme.
