CULTURAL PRACTICE FOR PINEAPPLE (Ananas comosus)

A. Area to be Planted

1. The soil must be light or friable, easily drained and a pH of 6 to 6.5.

2. It must be free of nematodes and other unwanted pests.

3. It must essentially contain adequate amounts of organic matter and other trace
minerals up to a depth of 1 meter. The organic matter content must range
between 5 to 10 % of the total soil volume within the root zone of the plants.

B. Land Preparation and Planting

1. The soil must be plowed deep using preferably a sub-soiler to a depth of at least
60 cm.

2. It must be harrowed 2 to 3 times to a fine tilth so that weeds are also adequately
controlled.

3. Double-hedged rows at a distance of 45 cm are made using a furrow attachment,

drawn by a tractor.

4. Organic fertilizer is applied on the furrow at the rate of about 20 to 25 bags per
hectare.

5. Seedling materials or suckers are planted on the furrow at a distance of about 45

cm between plants.

C. Care and Maintenance of the Plants

1. Thirty (30) days after planting (DAP), side dress the plants by placing 14-14-14
inorganic fertilizer in between the double-hedged furrows at the rate of 100 to
150 grams per plant.

2. Start spraying the plants with organic fertilizer using a 0.67% solution (1 liter of
the foliar fertilizer for every 160 liters of water) at 60 DAP and 60 days thereafter
up to the 16th month or 2 months before harvesting.

3. Side dress the plants at 180 DAP with a mixture of 1 bag of urea (46-0-0) and 1
bag of complete fertilizer (14-14-14) at the rate of 100 to 150 grams of the
mixture per plant, placing the mixed fertilizers along the double-hedged furrows.

4. Side dress the plants again at 360 DAP with a mixture of 1 bag of complete
fertilizer (14-14-14) and 1 bag of muriate of potash (0-0-60) at the rate of 100 to
150 grams of the mixture per plant, placing the fertilizer mixture along the
double-hedged furrows.

Important: Irrigate the plantation whenever necessary. Flower induction may be

applied about 360 DAP to induce inflorescense of the plants at the same time. This
will also make harvesting more practical.

D. Harvesting of the Fruits

1. Normally, the fruits are ready for harvest at 540 DAP or 18 months after planting
for varieties used for processing. For smaller fields this can be done individually
but for large plantations a number of pickers line up after a harvesting machine,
and lay the fruits on a conveyor belt to move to a collection bin.

2. Some varieties of pineapple have much shorter cropping periods (about 1 year to
maturity period).
