In this AEI Public Opinion Study, we bring together existing trend questions from many
pollsters about the subjects described in the title above to get a sense of how anxious or
economically insecure Americans feel.
We look here at what people say about their own lives and those of their friends and
family, and not at what people say about ―most Americans‖ or ―Americans in general.‖
We give substantial weight to what people say about their own situations, which we feel
they know best.

Job Anxiety
Most polls show that negative views about the economy as a whole rose during
the summer of 2010.
When asked specifically about whether they or a family member had a lost a job
in the past six months, however, polls have been stable all year. Around two-thirds say
this hasn’t happened to them. At the same time, however, around two-thirds say they
know someone other than a family member who has lost a job in the past six months.
Again, these responses appear stable in 2010. Eighty-five percent told Pew surveyors
that good jobs are hard to find in their area. That is the highest response on the
question since various pollsters started asking it in 1992.
Around three in ten in CBS’s June 2010 poll said they are very concerned that
they or someone in their family could lose a job in the next year. In Gallup’s August
2010 poll, a quarter said they were worried that they would be laid off or separately
that their wages would be cut in the near future. In the same Gallup series, 39 percent
worried that their benefits would be cut back. Although as said earlier, views about the
economy as a whole are more negative now in many polls than they were in the spring,
job anxiety for those who have jobs seemed to be most acute in 2009. In 2010, for those
who have jobs and who are weathering the storm, there is little indication that things
are getting worse. In the August 2010 NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 65 percent of
those with jobs were very or somewhat satisfied with their job security. In Gallup’s
August poll, 84 percent were completely or somewhat satisfied with it.
Thinking of the last six months, that is since ___ of last year, have you or someone in your family lost a job as a result of
economic conditions or not?

Now I'll read a list of job characteristics. For each, please tell me how satisfied you are with your current job in this
regard. Are you completely satisfied, mostly satisfied, mostly dissatisfied, or completely dissatisfied with . . . your job
security?
Thinking back over the last five years, which, if any, of the following have happened to you personally?
Note: In 1955, 69 percent said they would be happier with more money; in 1965 64 percent gave the same response.
Sample is adults employed full or part-time.
In the last 12 months would you say you have felt more secure and confident that you can continue in your job as long as
you want, or less secure and confident, or has there been no change?

Outsourcing
Next, please indicate whether you are worried or not about each of the following happening to you, personally, in the
near future. How about that your company will move jobs to countries overseas?
How concerned are you, that you, or a friend, or relative, might lose a job because the employer is moving that job to a
foreign country—very concerned, somewhat concerned, not too concerned, not at all concerned?
Question wording is always important in polls. In Pew’s June 2010 question, 38 percent
described their own personal financial situation as excellent or good. In CBS News’s
question 65 percent said the financial situation of their household these days as very or
fairly good. Sixty-one percent in the AP/GfK Roper August poll said their financial
situation these days was good. Thirty-six percent said it was poor. Twenty-six percent in a
July Fox New/Opinion Dynamics question said they were getting ahead, 54 percent just
keeping up with their bills, and 18 percent falling behind.
In a Gallup battery asked in the spring every year since 2001, views about different items in
one’s current financial situation such as being able to pay the minimum on credit card bills
or not having enough money to pay normal bills are more generally pessimistic in recent
years than they were earlier in the decade.
Anxiety about prospects for retirement has clearly risen in the past few years. In 2001,
when Gallup asked non-retired people whether they would have enough money in
retirement to live comfortably, 59 percent said they would. In 2010, that response was 46
percent. Those in retirement seem less concerned.
How would you rate your own personal financial situation? Would you say you are in excellent shape, good shape, only
fair shape or poor shape financially?

Retirement Anxiety:
In April 2010, 46 percent of non-retired adults said they thought they would have enough money
to live comfortably when they retired. Forty-eight percent didn’t think that was the case. In
2002, 59 percent said they would have enough money to live comfortably in retirement. More
non-retired adults today say they will rely on Social Security in retirement than gave that
response in 2001. Fewer say they will be able to rely on their 401Ks. Sixty-eight percent of
retired adults in 2010 said they had enough money to live comfortably. In 2002, 75 percent gave
that response.
