| PROFILE │ Mr. Aumir Abbas is a dedicated development professional, with an experience of


almost 15 years. His particular areas of intervention are education in general and
community based development in particular. He has been working in these areas
since 1995 and has benefited the communities.
During his association with NOWA, Sindh Education Foundation and Indus Resource
Centre, he has had greater exposure to community organization & mobilization,
conflict resolution, research studies, trainings (teachers & CBOs), health & IT
education, School management, examination and assessment.
His planning for Programme and team, and his incisive understanding of the
community has helped him and the stake-holders. Besides this, he has been
instrumental in providing liaison among community networks, Government schools,
School Management Committees, designed strategies to mainstream girls who were
out of schools, documentation of the Programme activities, design effective
monitoring strategies and teachers’ trainings. He is capable of developing process for
community schools and has introduced the system of delivering quality of education
in Govt. schools. He has had developed the large-scale mobilization plans, worked in
international agencies’ supported projects i.e. The British Council (DFID), The
World Bank, USAID, World Education, Save the Children-UK, Developments in
Literacy (DIL), IUCN, Action Aid (DA-12), Open Society Institution (USA) etc,. He
has delivered meaningful and insightful presentations to national and international
donors. He has also designed and delivered numerous training workshops for
teachers, teachers’ educators, CBOs, NGOs and Government officials.
He has an international exposure of visiting Nepal and Bangladesh wherein the
process of community development through educational initiatives reviewed,
assessed and in later, findings of an international visit were presented before the top
management of the World Education Boston USA in Pakistan during March-2005.
During, August-2010 he visited India and participated in 2 weeks’ training program
on micro entrepreneurship, NGO management and women empowerment model of
Rai Foundation and Piryas. Also visited Bangladesh once again during Dec-2011 for
one week course on best practices of BRAC in RH.
Presently he has been performing his duties as the Regional Manager in (ED-
Links) project funded by USAID, wherein his responsibilities are framed by Indus
Resource Centre (IRC) one of the implementing partners of ED-Links Project in
Sindh to implement the teachers and Students program within 05 districts of Northern
Sindh.
Quite unfortunately, Sindh province is experiencing the deadliest weather related
disaster known as super flood that has effected in many parts of Pakistan and
particularly Sindh. So, being the senior manager of IRC, he has been involved in
emergency response activities which include providing food and non food items to
IDPs within camps, design and implement IRC tent city model which is quite
successful and effective which accommodating more than 195 flood affected families

with more than 1221 people. He is quite instrumental in heading and providing
strategic guidance to IRC flood emergency response teams to cope up with day to day
matters.
Besides this he is responsible to coordinate, UNDP and FAO project activities across
flood affected districts of the same region.

Responsibilities performing:
Responsible to lead a team of 05 district managers in their
planning and implementation of the project modalities at district and
regional levels.
Taking meticulous and systematic efforts for improving the quality in
education at middle and secondary schools.
Help support Govt. officials for better categorization of school profiles,
data base management of subject teachers, improving the professional
development model for Head Teachers, Deputy Head teachers and subject
teachers, organizing excel camps and teachers development programs.
Donor reporting and coordination with all the implementing partners at
regional, provincial, national level.

Over all education & literacy programs’ responsibility at regional

IUCN in promoting environmental education within all IRC-
managed schools and an e-member of British Council and SPELT-
Society for Pakistan English Language Teachers.

In coordination with regional program coordinator, I have been
engaged in organizing trainings for political parties’ workers and
chairing meetings of District Steering Committee comprised of
political workers from PPP, PML (F), PML (N) and JUI. Have also
organized roundtable meetings on Education, Role of Local
Government and Law and order under a Political Development
Program Supported by National Democratic Institute for
International Affairs. Under Voters’ Education Project, supported
by TAF (The Asia Foundation) to work for Free and Fair Elections
Networks across three districts.

2- Facilitated a research study conducted within Sojhro


Schools by Sarah Simon and John Hellmann from Los
Angeles, University of California (UCLA) U.S.A.
As a sample, Model and Junior schools of Sojhro were focused by
both the research fellows. It was a master’s client project work
for IRC’s partner in education, DIL (Developments in Literacy)
USA.
The title of the project was, “A needs-based assessment of
teacher development strategies in DIL-funded schools.” The
research was focused on two concerns of teachers’: (a) how to
improve content knowledge and (b) increase self-study
opportunities. They further focused on three other DIL funded
projects, The Adult Basic Education Society (ABES), Indus
Resource Centre (IRC) and (NOWA), wherein total 76 schools
were taken from Punjab and Sindh.

3- During May and June-2007, under took a research project


on Women's Land Rights along with SDPI-Sustainable
Development Policy Institute Pakistan, which was a multi-
layered research aimed to draw its analysis through a policy and
law review by examining the current position regarding women’s
ownership and control over land. The fieldwork for it was
undertaken in all four provinces of Pakistan. The total numbers
of field sites were 8 out of which SDPI selected two districts from
each province, keeping in view the different geographical zones.

In order to ensure that the study encapsulates all significant


dimensions by looking at different types of land, that is, arid,
coastal, mountainous, etc.

These sites were carefully selected for research study in which


District Hyderabad and Khairpur were the important ones in
Sindh province.
