AutoCad Tutorial Lesson 1

The following instructions are for drawing the Figure of the Closed End Wrench
In this lesson the following commands will be used:

Note:
Command Keyboard Icon
Shortcut The commands show can be completed by using the
keyboard shortcuts or the icons.
Circle C
Commands can be repeated by using the Enter key or
Spacebar.
Copy CP All commands have multiple way of completion – the
default (standard) method is shown in < >. Alternate ways
Fillet F of completing each command is shown inside
[ ] , you need only to type the capital letters shown inside
Line L the brackets. (upper case is not needed when typing in
variables)
You must watch the command line when using AutoCad – it
Offset O tells you what information is necessary and how it can be
done.
Polygon POL

Trim TR

1. Open the Drawing Template

2. Insure that the word “Ortho” is indented

3. Insure that the correct layer is selected (Center). If the desired layer does not show in the
window then use the pull down arrow and left click on the name of the layer.
4. Draw a horizontal line in the middle of the drawing area approximately 8” long (Line A)
5. Draw a vertical line (Line B) near the right end

6. Offset Line B 1.14 by using the Offset command – Type the letter “O” press the enter key
or use the icon, next enter the amount of offset (1.14 in this case) press enter. Next click
on Line B then move the mouse to the left and click again. This create Line C. Click on
Line C move to the left again to make Line D. Repeat by clicking on the newest line
until you have created the figure as
shown.
7. Next Offset Line B - 6.75 to the left to make Line G.

8. All center lines are now complete and the circles can now be completed. In the drawing
provided all circles have a diameter measurement. So when you draw the circle you need
to specify a diameter unless you want to do the math.
9. Change the Layer to Visible by following the instructions in Step 3.
10. Either type the letter “C” on the keyboard and press Enter or use the Icon previously
shown, Auto Cad now wants the location of the circle so now you click on the
intersection of Lines A and B. Next Auto Cad wants the size of the radius of the circle,
since the diameter is given type the Letter “D” and press Enter, type the amount of the
diameter of the circle, in this case .5 press Enter. The result should look like the
following figure.
11. Next the remainder of the five identical circles need to be drawn. This is accomplished
by copying the previous circle in the following manner. Type the Letters “CP” and press
Enter or use the Icon, Auto Cad wants to know what you want to copy so identify the
circle by clicking on it, press enter, since you want multiple copies of the circle type the
letter “M” and press enter. Next Auto Cad wants to know the Base point. This is given
by clicking on the intersection of Lines A and B, next Auto Cad want to know the
location where you want the copy placed – click on the intersection of Line A and C.
Continue by clicking on the intersection of Lines A and D, A and E, A and F. The end
result should be the same as the following figure.

12. The next step is to draw the large circle at the intersection of Lines A and G. Be sure to
specify the diameter NOT a radius. Next draw a circle at the right end (intersection of A
and B) at the given radius. See figure.
13. Next draw the lines from the intersection of Line B an the outer circle as shown in the
following figure. Be sure to not let the Osnaps grab the second point of each line.

14. Next it is time to clean up the drawing. You will use the Trim command by typing “TR”
on the keyboard and pressing Enter or use the Icon. Auto Cad wants to know what the
cutting edges are – click on Line B, press enter, next click on the part of the circle you
want to remove. See Figures
15. Next we will use the Fillet command to trim the lines and to put the curve between the
large circle and the lines. This is done by typing “F” and Enter on the keyboard or using
the Fillet icon. Auto Cad wants to know the radius of the fillet so type “R” and press
Enter, type in the amount of the fillet radius and press Enter. The next step is to identify
the object that you want to fillet. Click on the large circle and on the line. The result
should be as shown in the following figure.

16. Next repeat the command by pressing Enter then identify the large circle and the other
line to do the other side. The fillet command will end by itself after you identify the two
objects to fillet.
17. The next process is to insert the Octagon. This is done by typing “POL” and Enter on the
keyboard or using the polygon icon. Type in the number of sides and press Enter. Click
on the center location of the polygon ( the intersection of Lines A and G). Auto Cad
wants to know if the polygon is inscribed or circumscribed. Since the dimension is
across the flats we use the circumscribe method so type in the letter C and press enter.
Next Auto Cad wand to know the radius of the circle that the polygon is circumscribed
around type in half of the diameter given .7515 and press enter. The end result is shown
in the following figure.

18. Next we need to clean up the drawing to get it ready for dimensions. This is completed
by offsetting the various element of the drawing and using them to trim the center lines.
The lines should extend the same amount in the entire drawing. I used .125 for the offset
amount. See if you can make your drawing look similar to the following example.
19. Be Sure to save your drawing as Closed end wrench.
