FAULT FINDING INTRODUCTION
General method 01E
Warning:
The Mégane can only support fault finding using the CLIP diagnostic tool fitted with the new vehicle
connection sensor lead (Part no. Elé. 1674 or 00 00 167 400).

The Mégane is a new generation multiplex vehicle. The specifications of the multiplex network have changed.
The main change in the multiplex network is the speed of communication: it has changed from 250 kBauds to
500 kBauds on the Mégane.

NOTE:
The multiplex network of the vehicle is the main functional communication network of the vehicle. But certain
optional fuctions are still performed by track wires.

This change has allowed a new optimisation of the electronic layout of the vehicle in two ways:
● Distribution of vehicle functions: the main computers present on the multiplex network manage several
functions (example: UCH: access - vehicle protection - lighting - wipers - passenger compartment heating - tyre
pressure monitor).
● Elimination of redundant sensors: The "steering wheel angle" signal used by the electronic stability program
is produced by the electric power assisted steering which then transmitts it to the multiplex network. So the
steering wheel angle sensor used by the electronic stability program does not exist.

This change has also allowed fault finding on computers present on the multiplex network to be performed by the
main communication network of the vehicle (multiplex network) instead of a cable network dedicated to fault
finding (K / L lines).

IMPORTANT:
However, the Mégane still uses two different physical fault finding media:
● The multiplex network: which allows fault finding of the following computers: instrument panel, electric
power assisted steering, airbag, automatic air conditioning, UCH, anti-lock braking system - electronic
stability program, protection and switching unit, injection.
● The K/L line fault fidning network: which allows fault finding on the following computers: automatic
transmission, LPG - NGV unit, XENON bulb.
Certain other computers, although present on the vehicle multiplex network, are still fitted with "self-
diagnostic function": Central Communication Unit (Carminat), driving school unit.

IMPORTANT:
Computer supply for the fault finding procedure:
To run fault finding on the vehicle computers, proceed as follows:
● Renault card on the card holder (keyless vehicle scenario 1 (basic, not hands-free) and scenario 2 (top of
the range, hands-free)
● Long press (more than 5 seconds) on "start" button without start-up conditions
● Then connect the diagnostic tool and perform the required operations.

Innovations on the Mégane:
The innovations on the Mégane may be classified into three categories:

FUNCTIONAL This section describes the new services present on the vehicle and their integration on
INNOVATIONS the vehicle.

ARCHITECTURAL This section describes the distribution of the main functions and the new computers
INNOVATIONS fitted to the vehicle.

This section describes the fault finding changes implemented on the Mégane in order
to:
● Allow fault finding on the multiplex network of the vehicle (new vehicle to diagnostic
FAULT FINDING tool connection sensor lead).
INNOVATIONS ● Develop and complement multiplex network fault finding functions (physical
measurements of the type of fault, fault finding assistance etc.).
● Mask the diversity and complexity of vehicle functions: fault finding by function, multi-
computers, etc.

1 - Functional innovations:
The main functional innovations on the vehicle are as follows:

This function is provided by the following computers:

This function is provided by the following computers:
● Central Communication Unit (Carminat): responsible for the function.
● Navigation display: displays information relating to navigation.
MULTIMEDIA
IMPORTANT:
This function may also be provided by the radio display, depending on the type of
navigation (basic - top of the range).

This function is provided by the following computers:

● UCH: responsible for the function, it also houses the receiver for tyre pressure
TYRE PRESSURE signals.
MONITOR ● Instrument panel: displays information relating to the tyre pressure monitor.
NOTE:
The tyre pressure is monitored by specific valves fitted with tyre pressure sensors.

2 - Design innovations:

These innovations concern services which are already in use but which are implemented in a specific way on the
Mégane II:

This service is standard on RENAULT vehicles, only the distribution of tasks is

specific:
● Air conditioning: responsible for user intention (management of temperature for
controlled air conditioning) and for mixing and distribution of air in the passenger
AIR CONDITIONING compartment (manual and controlled air conditioning).
● UCH: responsible for the heating function.
● Injection: responsible for management of the air conditioning (cold cycle).
● Switching Protection Unit: responsible for the power required for air conditioning
(compressor and engine cooling fan).

The distribution of the function is as follows:

● UCH: responsible for driver's intention, management of the wiper stalk and the rear
WIPERS screen wiper.
● Switching Protection Unit: responsible for the power required for the windscreen
wiper.

This function has already been described in Section 1 - Functional innovations. Refer
to this section for further information.
LIGHTING NOTE:
In the case of lighting without XENON bulbs, the Switching Protection Unit manages
the dipped headlights.

01E-3
FAULT FINDING INTRODUCTION

This function is shared by two computers:
● Injection: management of programming and information associated with engine
ENGINE
management, and of the speed regulation and limitation function.
MANAGEMENT -
● Protection and Communication Unit: management of the power required for engine
INJECTION
management. The Protection and Communication Unit also incorporates the fuel
pump relay and actuators controlled by cable by the injection computer.

Finally, the Mégane has a new computer, which has never been fitted to any
RENAULT vehicle before: the Switching Protection Unit. The main functions of this computer are as follows:

VEHICLE POWER The main power relays of the vehicle are directly integrated into the Switching
SUPPLY Protection Unit (including the fuel pump relay and injection actuators).

General method 01E
3 - Fault finding innovations:

Development of the electronic and functional design of the Mégane has necessitated changes in the fault finding
processing used. The main fault finding changes are as follows:
● New diagnostic tool to vehicle connection sensor lead: This change is made necessary by the new medium
used for communication with the computers present on the main communication network of the vehicle: the
multiplex network. This lead incorporates the communication cards for the computers of the multiplex network
and the computers which can support fault finding on the K / L lines.

IMPORTANT:
The airbag harness tests and the various physical measurement tests must always be carried out using the
existing diagnostic tool leads and modules.

● New interface for diagnostic tool navigation: The diagnostic tool navigation display has changed for fault
finding the Mégane. Note in particular the following changes:
● Identification of the vehicle by entering the VIN: For the moment this change is specific to the Mégane. It
can be performed manually or automatically, by interrogation of the vehicle. It also gives the After-Sales type,
and the engine and gearbox type.

NOTE:
This change will eventually be extended to all RENAULT vehicles which can already support fault finding by
VIN identification (example: Laguna II, Clio II Phase 2).

● Distinction between the fault finding and repair menus: The fault finding menu incorporates all the
functionalities associated with analysis of an electrical or electronic fault (processing of faults, conformity
checking, actuator commands and processing by customer complaint) whereas the repair menu allows
performance of all the operations associated with replacement of a component and/or modification of the
diagnostic system configuration (configuration read operations, configuration, programming, specific
commands etc.).

● New electronic layout integrity test: As correct operation of the vehicle is dependent on the integrity of the
multiplex network (main functional communication network) and of the cabled electronic systems, the multiplex
network test has changed, becoming the vehicle electronic layout integrity test. The changes are as follows:
● Multiplex network test: This test remains similar to that already used for RENAULT multiplex vehicles. But it
also incorporates a read of the number of faults from the multiplex computers, physical measurements of the
types of multiplex network faults (open circuit, short circuit to earth, short circuit to the +ve of the faulty rings)
and an assisted help procedure for detecting the defective computer or ring (in the event of total paralysis of
the network).

01E-5
FAULT FINDING INTRODUCTION
General method 01E
● Testing other computers which support fault finding: this test consists of connection and identification of
the computers present on the vehicle which can support fault finding K / L lines.

● New fault finding topics: the fault finding topics are now split into two separate menus:
● Computer diagnosis: similar to the existing fault finding topics apart from the changed menu presentation.
The states and parameters menus have been modified to allow simultaneous display of these data items and
divided into screens by function and sub-function (example: "ignition" sub-function in Injection). In addition, the
computer fault finding procedure allows access to the vehicle "repair" menu when replacing parts to be
matched with the vehicle (configuration, programming).
● Fault finding by function: limited to computer fault finding present on the multiplex network of the vehicle and
to the keyless vehicle, air conditioning and tyre functions. This new type of fault finding allows an overall
diagnosis of a function to be made by simultaneous dialogue with all the computers involved in providing
the service. In this way, it is possible to simultaneously analyse all the components associated with a function
and also simultaneously supervise intersystem exchanges between the computers responsible for a customer
service.

NOTE:
In the event of detecting a faulty component, it is necessary to switch to computer fault finding mode to
perform the configuration operations - programming the replaced part.

If a function fault is detected, a physical part is replaced: hence the choices made concerning
navigation of the diagnostic tool.

INNOVATIONS
Special notes 01H
Warning: fault finding on the MEGANE II can only be carried out using the CLIP fault finding tool fitted with
the new vehicle connecting cable/sensor (Part number: Elé. 1674 or 00 00 167 400).

Introduction:

The purpose of this "Fault finding Innovations" section is to demonstrate the main fault finding developments in line
with the development of the vehicle's technical specifications and in particular, the complexity of its design. These
developments in fault finding can be divided into four categories:
● Fault finding procedure: this subsection describes the overall fault finding procedure to apply to the vehicle
as well as developments with regard to the fault finding tool.
● New application for the fault finding tool: this subsection describes changes in the way information is
presented in Fault finding and Repair mode.
● Computer fault finding: this subsection describes the various functions that can be accessed in Fault
finding and Repair mode.
● Function fault finding: this subsection describes the various functions that can be accessed in Fault finding
by Function (Keyless Vehicle/Air conditioning and Tyres) and Repair mode.

1. Fault finding procedure:

1.1. Computer supply:

To run fault finding on the vehicle's computers, the ignition must be switched on in fault finding mode (+ after
ignition), i.e. proceed as follows:
● Renault card in the card holder (keyless vehicle scenarios 1 (basic, not hands-free) and 2 (top of the
range, hands-free)
● Long press (more than 5 seconds) on "start" button without start-up conditions
● Then connect the fault finding tool and perform the required operations.

Important: the computers on the right and left of the Xenon bulbs are supplied when the dipped headlights are lit.
Fault finding procedures can only be carried out on them after the ignition has been switched on in fault finding mode
and the dipped headlights are on.

Cutting off the + after ignition feed is performed as follows:

● Disconnect the fault finding tool.

● Press the "start" button twice briefly.
● See that the + after ignition feed has been cut off by checking that the computer warning lights on the
instrument panel have gone out.

Configuration of the computers on the multiplex network:

This configuration specifies the computers present on the vehicle's multiplex network. It must be carried out
when replacing the Airbag or UCH computer.

Diagnosable computer configuration:

The configuration of diagnosable computers is a new function on the vehicle. It is required to specify computers
that can support fault finding with the Renault diagnostic tool. It can determine non conformity or lack of response
for a computer on the vehicle.
The configuration of diagnosable computers on the vehicle is stored in the passenger compartment central unit
(UCH) and Airbag. It is specific to the vehicle diagnosed and must be respecified when one of these two
computers is replaced.
During the configuration operation for computers on the vehicle that can support fault finding, the tool displays
the list of computers specified in the other computer to give help and support to the operator.
Finally, if there is uncertainty about which computers on the vehicle can support fault finding, the exhaustive list
(specific to the vehicle) can be obtained by consulting the World Vehicle Database.

01H-6
FAULT FINDING INNOVATIONS
Special notes 01H
● Fault finding by Computer: after the vehiclelayout result, the fault finding tool lists the various computers that can
be accessed for fault finding and repair by the Renault tool. Fault finding by computer enables you to access all the
functionalities related to dealing with and repairing a failure

● Fault finding by Function: after the vehiclelayout result, the fault finding tool immediately lists the various
functions that can be accessed by the Renault tool. Moreover, selecting a function can identify the computers
responsible for this function at once. Fault finding by Function can access the fault finding procedure for computers
contributing to a function at the same time as well as the configurations related to this function.

Warning: all the menus in "Repair" mode described previously cannot be accessed from Fault finding by
Function. A function is diagnosed and a part or computer is repaired.

Example: when the "Keyless vehicle" function is selected, the UCH (passenger compartment central unit),
Switching and Protection unit and iInjection computers appear as graphics on the vehiclelayout result
screen.

REMINDER:
The Renault fault finding procedure can still be applied to the Megane II. For the record, faults will be dealt
with as a priority (in fault finding by computer or by function). If the customer's problem cannot be resolved,
carry out a conformity test (either by computer, or by function) and then a fault finding procedure by customer
complaint.

IMPORTANT:
The Mégane II fault finding procedure makes a distinction in the functions of the fault finding tool between the
ideas of fault finding (identifying and dealing with a customer problem) and repair (altering the technical
specifications of a computer after identifying the cause of a problem or replacing a part or computer).

Parameterisation: this field specifies the parameter to be written to the computer memory in order to carry
out the configuration (here, B84 or similar, J84 or similar etc.).

Information: this field gives the vehicle operating conditions to carry out the configuration.

Enter: a mouse click on this button launches the configuration.

To return to the write configuration screen, press the "previous screen" button or the "Write Configuration" button.

3.2.3. Other parameterisations:

This function combines all the configuration/programming procedures of a computer (e.g. configuration of a UCH,
Renault card allocation). The procedures are specific to the computer and so will not be described in this section but
rather in the sections relating to computer fault finding and repair.

3.2.4. Programming:

This function contains all the procedures related to replacing a part that needs to be paired on the vehicle (e.g.
throttle body where the mechanical stops need to be programmed). These programming methods are specific to a
computer, details will be given in the specific computer sections.

3.2.5. Deleting:

This function contains the various deleting functions specified for a computer. e.g. deleting faults (all computers),
deleting programming (e.g. injection computer).

"Copy of a screen shown as an example: not representative of the actual vehiclelayout".

This screen shows the various deleting functions specified for a given computer. The deleting function is accessed
by a "mouse click" on the deleting title (here, erasing the fault memory).

4. Fault finding/Repair by Function:

This new fault finding/repair mode is due to advances in complexity of the vehicle architecture and the division of a
"customer" function between different "independent" computers. This type of fault finding enables dialogue to be
carried out with different computers at the same time as they carry out a given function.

4.1. Fault finding by Function:

This subsection will deal with the features of this fault finding mode in relation to fault finding by computer described
previously.

4.1.1. Summary screen:

The main difference from computer fault finding is the presence of tabs that give access to summary screens for
different computers or a different function (here, air conditioning function including the climate control, injection, UCH
and the Switching and Protection unit computers / see arrow 1). All other elements are exactly the same as the
computer fault finding.

4.1.4. State and parameter screen:

"Copy of a screen shown as an example: not representative of the actual vehiclelayout".

Key:

Zone 1: list of sub functions associated with the function selected.

Zone 2: list of states and parameters associated with a sub-function, categorised by computer. In fault
finding by function, the states and parameters of a function (e.g. keyless vehicle) can be accessed by sub
function (e.g. starting) then by computer (e.g. UPC X84) to give the desired information simultaneously.

4.1.5. Actuator screen:

"Copy of a screen shown as an example: not representative of the actual vehiclelayout".

Key:

Zone 1: list of functions associated with the function selected.

Zone 2: list of actuators associated with a sub-function, categorised by computer.

In fault finding by function, the actuators can be accessed by sub function (e.g. heating), then by computer (e.g.:
UPC X84) and finally by type of actuator (e.g. rear screen de-icing).

UPC X84) and finally by type of actuator (e.g. rear screen de-icing).
4.2. Repair function:
4.2.1. Reading Configuration:
This screen is the same as the reading configuration screen in computer mode. The only difference is the tabs that
enable computers (related to the function) to be selected whose configurations you wish to check.

4.2.2. Non accessible functions:

Functions that are not accessible in "fault finding by function" mode are as follows:
● Writing configuration
● Other parameterisations
● Programming
● Clearing data other than the fault memory

This choice is related to the fault finding procedure that distinguishes physical components from the functions carried
out.
