Words from our Pastor
We have completed two-thirds of our “Mini-
Disciple Study” on the Gospel of John and
have had some great discussions. People have
come and gone as their summer schedules
permitted but have generally had a great time
studying the bible. We are moving the discussion
to Tuesday night for the next couple of weeks to
avoid conflicts and the Labor Day holiday.
So what do we study next? Our Wednesday
night Pastor‟s Study starts up again in mid-
September and I have been exploring where we
might go. I would like to propose that we look at
the Book of James. James deals almost
exclusively with the social and practical aspects of
Christianity. It reminds us of the everyday
problems with which we struggle and maintains
that Christian faith touches every aspect of life,
transforming routine pursuits into opportunities for
discipleship. Our Pastor‟s Study will start on
Wednesday, September 17th, and will be held in
the chapel 6:45--7:30 pm.
As a Dad of seven of the “thumb generation”
it‟s hard keeping up with all their text messaging,
and online chats, and myspace/facebook pages,
etc. But I am trying to stay digital. As such, I have
created a web log (commonly referred to as a
blog--“A Slice of Seminole Heights UMC.” You
can find the one that I‟ve created for our church at
a new web address--www.shumc.org. I hope
that you will look at it on a regular basis. It
includes some of my thoughts, digital copies of the
bulletins and newsletters, links to UMC articles
and connects you to the new UMC Web portal
(developed by the United Methodist Reporter). I
recently talked about a book I was given last week
by Alma Ferguson (absolutely fascinating) and I
include book reviews and links to Cokesbury and
Amazon where you can purchase the book. You
can also add your own comments to the blog. Join
me in the digital ministry of our church.
Speaking of which, I have earnestly tried about ten
different web site building programs and have
miserably failed. I simply can‟t seem to get the
handle on HTML. I need a WYSIWYG style of
program. Finally, I retreated back to my own Apple
Mac and created a website for the church using
iWeb. You can find my primitive efforts at
www.seminoleheightsumc.org. Anybody else want
to give it a try? Clearly I need help!
