297-8804 Extended Forecast for the Town

We’ve had a lot of snow in the SW area this winter. With the transition into spring,
everyone’s thoughts turn to the prospects of flooding. No one more so than the
Mayor, Scott Morvik, whose attention is on the extended 5-week weather forecast.
“Ten degree temperatures aren’t that significant, 20 degrees is the issue.” Scott
says. A fast melt is exactly what we don’t need.
However, the Town has a plan in the event of an emergency. The Mayor and Deb
Giverhaug, Emergency Measures Officer, have reviewed it several times to be sure
we are as prepared as possible should water levels rapidly rise.

assistance. When offered funding for temporary measures, the Mayor and Town
Council declined, requesting more substantial help. On March 24th the Provincial
Government confirmed that they will be providing 75% of funding for the con-
struction of a permanent flood wall from Hwy. 13 to the railway tracks. This will
not be ready this spring but will contribute additional safety in the future.

In the meantime let’s assess our situation. Potential flooding would come from the
Movies eastern end of the town, the lowest area. The Lift Station for the sewer is a point
of vulnerability. High water there would cause a back-up through our sewer sys-
tem. However, Mayor Morvik indicates that we would have ample time for warn-
