STATE POLITICS
The then Shadow Minster for Education Adrian Piccoli’s response to a members email enquiry about the
NSW Coalitions position on the Arts in the National Curriculum.
25th March, 2011
Dear Madam,
Thank you for your correspondence on the proposed national curriculum. I am sorry for the time it has taken for
me to respond.
As you would be aware, the final approval of the national curriculum has been deferred until October 2011,
pending further development work. The NSW Liberals and Nationals support the move towards more national
uniformity if it results in a better education for NSW students, but not if it means NSW loses out.
However, the NSW Board of Studies and other key stakeholders have strongly criticised the proposed national
curriculum, claiming it is vastly inferior to the existing NSW curriculum.
NSW currently has one of the highest quality curriculums in the nation, and the NSW Liberals and Nationals do
not want to see that compromised in any way.
A NSW Liberals and Nationals Government will take a more proactive approach to dealing with the Federal
Government to make sure that, as part of any national agreement, the quality of the NSW education system is
maintained, and hopefully enhanced.
Further, I will closely scrutinise the proposed national curriculum, and also ensure that a request for extra federal
funding be made to cover the cost of implementing the curriculum, estimated at $30 million a year.
Thank you for taking the time to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
Adrian Piccoli, MP
Member for Murrumbidgee
Deputy Leader of the Nationals
Shadow Minister for Education, Skills & Youth Affairs
