The Messages
It is a matter of great pleasure for me to know that the Zoological Society of the Depart-
ment of Zoology is striving for a de novo effort in bringing out the news letter „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟.
I hope that publication of such a magazine would provide an opportunity to the young creative
minds to exploit their potential to the fullest and augment well for enlightening modern and latest
researches in Zoological Sciences.
I take this opportunity to congratulate the entire team of „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ specially the
editorial team and hope that it would be a great success laced with academic, literary and creative
achievements.
I am happy to learn that the Zoological Society of the Department of Zoology is preparing
to bring out a Newsletter „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ after a lapse of about twenty long years. The effort is
really praiseworthy. I congratulate the editorial board members of „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ for making
the dream come true. I am sure „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ will be a remarkable addition to the literary
work.
I wish „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ a great success.
I feel pleasure to announce that new effort has been made to revive the Zoological Soci-
ety. The Department of Zoology is coming up with another novel approach to achieve this aim
through „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟. Ever since the Risala-e- Hawaniyat started with Prof. M. B. Mirza in
1930, it met with uncertainty of publication for want of funds. An effort in 1987, also had the
same fate. I hope that funds will not come in the way of its publication anymore.
There is always a necessity to tap the literary talents of the scholars community and to
record for posterity the academic achievements of the department. In this light the entire editorial
board is to be complemented for their sincere efforts in bringing the „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ and I
hope that it will be a regular feature in the coming years.
I wish „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ every success.

Academic Tours
Educational tours have been an inseparable part in the curricula of the department. Every year the tours are dispatched to different laboratories. This year (2010-
11), the students visited prestigious labs throughout India. The activity is briefly reported:
Entomology
Entomology students embarked upon the tour of South India between 19 th to 31st Jan.
2011. Places of prime interest included Central Silk Technological Research Institute
(CSIRI) in Bangalore and Mysore, Seed Production Centre, Central Sericulture Research
and Training Institute and Central Satellite Silk Breeding Centre, Coonoor. Some of in-
struments related to Mother Moth examination, Weaving Machine, Transgenic fly tech-
niques were demonstrated. The institutes were engaged in creating new varieties of silk
worm, pest management and disease control. Prof. S.M.H. Quadri, Director, CSTRI,
Mysore greeted the students and Dr. Jagdish Prabhu and Dr. T.D. Jyothi gave elaborate
lectures followed by interactive session.
Genetics
The section of Genetics visited Chandigarh – The City of Peace and tranquality from
19th to 25 Jan. 2011. The Institute of Microbial Technology, Zoology Department and
Microbiology Department of Panjab University were marked for sites of research inter-
est. IMTECH housed many state of the art labs engaged in yeast molecular biology, en-
vironmental biotechnology, protein biochemistry and protein engineering. Next stop was
Panjab University and its various sections including Entomology, Fisheries, Parasitol-
ogy, Cytogenetics and Animal Physiology. The faculty members showed the students
around and briefed their work. The students also participated in a seminar on “Exploring
New Vistas in Biodiversity for Sustainable Development”. On bench demonstration of
various molecular techniques was also given in the workshop. The tour proved to be
very fruitful experience for all the students.
Nematology
The section set afoot to Udaipur and Jodhpur in Rajasthan from 9 th to 16th Jan. 2011.
Many a laboratories visited and students apprised them of with the applied researches
going on in Arid Forest Research Institute, Jodhpur. Prof. Irfan Ahmad, Head, Entomol-
ogy Division and Dr. Sangeeta were actively engaged in extended talks. Many plant pro-
tection approaches were explained to students at Central Arid Zone Research Institute,
where Dr. Satyavir Sharma was very helpful. Dr. Koll also helped in group discussion.
The tour was a good exposure to applied work in Nematology
