The attributes of these directions form the basis of the science of Vastu.

Directions & their respective Rulers

North-east (Eshan) is ruled by

Sadasiva or God Himself. Hence this
direction is paramount, which
demands keeping it scrupulously
clean, open and highly receptive in a
welcome "mode" always.
East is ruled by Indra, the chief of the
gods, giver of pleasures. The direction
also represents the realm of the rising
Sun projecting ultra-violet rays, so
essential for health in several ways.
South-east (Agneya) is the habitat of
fire, the storehouse of energy.
South is the abode of Yama, the god
of death.
South-west (Nairitya) is the abode of
Putna demoness.
West is the abode of Varuna, the god
of ocean. It is also the direction of the
setting Sun which gives infra-red
radiation.
North-west (Vayavva) is the abode of
air/wind, the invisible, but the most
effective blessing for all objects in
need of motion/movement for their
efficiency.
North is the abode of Kuber, the god
of wealth.

• Stairs should always comprise the clock-wise direction.

• No room should be constructed below the staircase
• The doors must be located in the north and east
• Out houses should not come in contact with the compound wall of the Northern
and Eastern side.
• Open space around the building in the east and the north direction are more
acceptable than that in the west and the south directions.
The first floor rooms should never have balconies in the south or the south-
west directions. There is no harm if the balcony is constructed leaving the
south-west corner if balconies in these directions are unavoidable. The corners of
the balcony, however, should not be rounded or have an oblique cut.

 The first floor rooms should have doors and windows in the east and the
north directions. A big window in the north-west direction is considered
advantageous. It generates positive energy.
 If the North West corner of a plot is missing it leads to unnecessary enmity, fear
of theft and robbery.
 In the north-east block of the plot there can be a well, boring, underground water
storage tank, garden or fountain. However, the ground level of these things should be less
than the plinth level of the building. But these should not be constructed in front of the
compound gate.

 The south-east block, at a distance of 2-3 feet from the compound wall, is suitable to
construct watchman quarters, boiler room, transformer room and canteen.

• There should be no septic tank, well, water storage tank or boring at the
centre of the plot. In case these rules are not followed it will adversely affect the
owner of the building and also the people residing in it.

• It is always better to have two gates on the wall compound. Vastu Shastra reasons
that if an evil force enters from one gate it can leave fro the other gate.
.
• Always keep the center of the room, building and plot, free from any loads,
weights, pillars, columns, beams, water bodies, etc.

BATHROOM

For Bathrooms too certain basic principles are advocated by Vastu Shastra.

These are:-
 It is advised that the bathrooms are located adjacent to the south-east corner in
the east direction.
• The bathroom must never be in the Southeast or South-West corners. Apart
from the South taps in the bathroom should either be in the East, North or West
 The sink or the washbasin and the shower should be placed in the northeast,
north or the east side.
 Heater, switchboard, all other electrical appliances should be in the south-east
direction.
 Tub baths should be either in the east, the west or the north-east directions in the
bathrooms.
 The water outlet should not be in the south-east or the south-west direction.
 The wall mirrors and the door of the bathrooms should be in the east or the
north. They should not be in the south direction.
 The pot in the toilet should be in the west, the south or the north-west side of the
room.
• Toilets should be located in the Northwest corner of the building or in the
Northwest corner of the rooms. Where Northwest toilets are not possible,
Southeast toilets are allowed

KiTCHEN

 The kitchen should be in the south-east corner of the main building or flat

 The main kitchen platform should be placed in the east and the southeast
corner. It must be remembered that the platform should not touch the east and the
south walls of the kitchen. Built them at least 1-2 inches away from the walls.

 Stove or gas burner should be in the south-east corner, a few inches away from
the wall.

 The wash basin (sink) of the platform should be in the north-east corner as far as
possible. Pitcher of water and utensils for drinking water should be in the north-east or
the north side.

 A kitchen in the west direction is acceptable. However, if the kitchen is in the

north-east direction mental tension increases and one may suffer great losses. If the
kitchen is in the southwest direction, life at home will become difficult due to
internal strife.

 If in a building the kitchen is in the northwest direction, the expenditure of that

family will increase and progress is reduced. Moreover there are dangers of getting
burnt from fire, hot water etc will also loom. But the most dangerous is a kitchen in
the north. This being Kubera`s place the expenditure can increase beyond
expectations.
Septic Tank

 The septic tank should not face the south-east, the north-east or the south-west corner
under any condition.
 If the north side is divided into 9 equal parts then it should be placed in the third part
from the north-west direction.
 It should not be directly touch the wall compound or the plinth of the house. It should
be at least 2 feet away from the wall or the plinth.
 Amongst the 3 parts of the septic tank water should be in the east and the excretion in
the west.
 Due to the scarcity of space, the septic tank can be built in the northern corner of the
west side but that should be 2 feet away from the compound wall.
 The length of the septic tank should be in the east-west direction and the breadth in
the south-north directions.
 The septic tank should never be higher than the plinth level of the building. It is
advisable to construct it at the ground level.
 The outlet of the septic tank should be in the north or the west directions.

Overhead Water Tank

 The overhead water tank should be located in the west or the south-west
direction of the building.

 The overhead water tank in this direction should be at least 2 feet above the
uppermost slab. It should not touch the slab.

 Over head tank should not be located in the southeast corner also. If it is built here
then it may lead to loss of wealth and accidents are probable.

 Care must be taken so that the tank is not built in the middle (Bramhasthan). If
there is a load on the Brahma it becomes impossible to live in the house. If the
overhead tank at the Bramhasthan is removed, surprising advantages can be
experienced within 21 days.

Interior Planning of the Main Building

Central Portion of the Vastu: The central portion is known as the Brahma. According
to Vastu Shastra this portion should never be put to use.

Bathrooms: If these are located adjacent to the south-east corner in the east direction
they will prove very favorable. They should never be constructed in the center or in the
south -west corner of the house

Toilets: These should never be constructed in the center, north-east, south-east and south-
west corners. They should always be constructed in the west of the building or the north-
west side of the north or the south directions.
Drainage Pipe Line: The pipe lines should have their outlet in the east or the north
directions. According to Vastu Shastra outlets should never be in the South.

Place of Idol and Worship: The places of worship should never be constructed in the
East, the North or the North-East corners. But these should never be located in the
bedrooms. Vastu Shastra also offers tips on where to locate the idols, the Agnikund and

Living Room or Drawing Room: Barring the South-East corners these units should be
located in the East. Even the furniture should be placed by following the rules of Vastu
Shastra.

Vastu Shastra advises to build it in the North direction of the main building. The room for
head of the family should be in a definite direction.

Study Room: This should be built in the West direction leaving the South-West and the
North-West corners. Since it is an important unit in a building it should be constructed
with precision and care.

Dining Room: The ideal direction to construct the eating area is in the West direction.
Vastu Shastra also offers tips to place the furniture in this room.

North direction. There are certain rules regarding its doors and the placing of the safes. If
these are followed it will lead generate positive energy.

Store Room or Granary: The store room or the granary should be located in the North-
West corner of the main building.

Waste Storage or Lumber Room: The ideal position for the lumber room should be in
the South-West corner of the open space around the main building. If this is not possible,
it should be at least in the South- West corner within the main building.

Corners of the Open Space around the Structure: There are several corners in a
structure and each of this has its own share of advantages and disadvantages. Vastu
Shastra speaks about this corners in details.

Verandah: Ideally this unit in a building should be positioned in the East or the North
