AT A HIGH LEVEL, TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS ARE BASED ON THREE MAIN LAYERS,
NAMELY CORE, EDGE AND ACCESS …

Telecommunication Network Basic Hierarchy

Backbone or Core Layer Characteristics:

(High Capacity Equipment) – High traffic carrying capacity
– Switches and transports aggregated traffic
100s to 1000s Km
Distance Scale
from lower layers of the network
Main challenges:
– Ensure necessary capacity availability
– Ensure high capacity utilization
– Ensure high level of network availability

Characteristics:
Edge Layer – Aggregate traffic from access network
Main challenges:
(Medium Capacity Equipment) – Ensure network capacity does not become a
10s to 100s Km traffic bottleneck
Distance Scale – Ensure high level of network availability

Characteristics:
Access Layer – Collect traffic from end users and pass on to
(Low Capacity Equipment) edge layer
1s to 10s Km Main challenges:
Distance Scale – Invest extensively in infrastructure to provide
widest possible coverage
– Ensure capacity is available where demand is,
at a very detailed level

HOWEVER, THERE IS A SET OF ISSUES THAT OUGHT TO BE CONSIDERED PRIOR TO
INTRODUCING EDGE

Consideration for the Introduction of EDGE

The current GPRS infrastructure may not yet be fully utilized and services offered may be sufficient to
the end-user

New radio equipment has to be installed within the existing GSM base stations

Cell sizes have to be much smaller than with pure GSM due to the reduced transmission range
– Additional sites may need to be installed in the network to reduce cell size

EDGE standards are still not fully defined

– Development of Phase-2 of the standards is still ongoing and scope has been extended to cover
the alignment with WCDMA and the provisioning of IP multimedia
– The current evolution of GSM/EDGE radio access networks covering the support of enhanced
packet services is still under standardization and different vendors may adopt their proprietary
solutions in the meantime

THE NGN ARCHITECTURAL TRANSFORMATION IS STRIKINGLY SIMILAR TO THE CHANGE THAT
OCCURRED IN CORPORATE INFORMATION PROCESSING DURING THE LAST DECADE

Analogy with Corporate Computing Transformation

Economics and breakthrough technology combined to alter the data networking architecture
completely
– Instead of networks based on large, centralized, expensive mainframes and dumb terminals,
today’s distributed networks are made up of low-cost, smart desktop computers linked together

This transformation has permitted applications to be pushed closer to the end-user, reducing overall
cost while greatly enhancing system flexibility and functionality

In other words, this new generation of low-cost, open switching platforms has the potential to
transform the telecommunications service market in the same way that the desktop personal
computer (PC) changed the corporate computing landscape

Large, centralized, Class-5 proprietary switches will continue to play a significant role in the network,
but distributed, open, and programmable class-5 access and enhanced services platforms will play a
dominate role in the network landscape

IP-MPLS SWITCHING TECHNOLOGY IS ENABLING SIGNIFICANT SERVICE CREATION CAPABILITIES
AND BRINGING COST EFFICIENCY BENEFITS
Intelligent Switches Benefits
Subscribers increasingly will demand innovation services that add value to their personal
communications
– The ability to create and deploy customized services that satisfy subscribers’ needs is required to
compete profitability

Next-generation switches offer an advantage: flexible programmability, with enhanced service

applications integrated within the switch architecture
– This eliminates the need for a separate enhanced services platform in most situations, further
reducing up-front costs
– The open software architecture enables rapid development of new services and features and
allows for third-party application development

This flexibility, combined with the low cost and distributed nature of next-generation switches, enables
network operators to create service offerings tailored to discrete subscriber bases – even in the
smallest deployments
– As next-generation switches offer unprecedented network integration capabilities, they allow
unique service bundles, combining voice services, data services, Internet access, enhanced
services, and more

OVERALL, NGNs ARE EXPECTED TO YIELD SIGNIFICANT CAPEX AND OPEX REDUCTIONS, WHILE
CREATING NEW REVENUE GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES

Benefits From Deploying Next Generation Network

 CAPEX savings
– More efficient use of the transport network
– Lower overall cost of meeting growth requirements. NGN elements cost less than circuit switched
equipment

 OPEX savings
– Reduced cost associated with operating and maintaining one network versus two
– Reduced cost associated with network planning, engineering and provisioning
– Simpler budget management. The distributed nature of NGN allows incremental upgrades to the
network versus large purchases of switching equipment

 Revenue growth
– Extended ability for service creation and innovation
– Shorter time to market and provision
– Leasing freed up capacity to the new service providers
