I.2. Age: 16 years old

I.3. Birthday: February 27, 1995

I.4. Gender: Female

I.5. Year/ Grade Level: Third Year

I.6. Residence: Sta. Ana, Bulakan, Bulacan

II. Academic Achievement

Academically speaking, Ruth Joyce D.R. Fermin is not good as the others may
be. She is not a consistent honor student but she always belongs to the pilot
section even she was on her Elementary Years. I can say that she can able to
perform on the level she must to be.

On the other hand, when she reached her Secondary Days, she excelled more
on Extra- Curricular Activities rather than Academic. She became the officer of
the Supreme Student Government in her school Taliptip National High School
(TNHS).

Moreover, she actively participated on the different competitions on her

school. She usually joined in Beauty Pageant that I really considered as her best
foundation in building her self-confidence because she was able to compete with
her other competitors despite of the fact that they are better than her.

To sum up, even she is not smarter than the others, she excels in other field
because she keeps on believing that she has an edge to cater the circumstances
where she belongs.
III. Physical Health

Ruth Joyce weighs 42 kilograms and she stands 162 in centimeters.

IV. Learning Abilities

1.1. Learning Abilities

Based on her own observations to her capabilities to some subject

matters, she finds it enjoyable to learn Mathematics. She excels on this kind
of subject wherein others may really hate. Based on the site
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25836419/us_news-education/, “Girls have
now achieved gender parity in performance on standardized Math tests.”
Girls are much advanced in Calculus subject. It concluded that not only boys
are excelling in Math subjects but even girls. On the site
http://www.economy.com/node/11449804?story_id=11449804, it is stated
that, “Girls may acquire an absolute advantage over boys as a result of equal
treatment.” In short, if there’s an equal treatment between boys and girls in
learning Mathematics subject in the classroom, there’s a possibility that
there’s a balance level of learning between them.

Moreover, Ruth Joyce is a computer literate. She knows everything about

computer. It has also to do with her studies because she is able to rely on it
for researches. Through that, on her computer subject, she can even perform
better. Based on a New Study by r

1.2. Learning Preferences

Benjie has his own learning style on hoe he acquires knowledge and
information from others. Keefe (1979) defines learning as the “composite of
characteristic cognitive, affective and physiological factors that serve as
relatively stable indicators of how a learner perceives, interacts with, and
responds to the learning environment.” Stewart and Felicetti (1992) define
learning styles as those “educational conditions under which a student is
most likely to learn.” Thus, learning styles are not really concerned with
“what” learners learn, but rather “how” they prefer to learn.

As a student, he considered himself belonged to Auditory Learner. He

prefers to learn through listening. He reads something self out loud. He
listens to instructions and information given orally. He repeats information
silently to himself. He tries to remember important terminologies by thinking
about how parts of the words sound.

Auditory Learners process information that they hear. “They filter

incoming information through their listening and repeating skills. The
Auditory Learners tell wonderful stories and solve problems by “talking”
about them.” (School Smart Kids Newsletter, Volume 1, No.4, The Center for
New Discoveries in Learning, June 1996.).

Auditory Learners rarely take notes and are easily distracted by sounds
in the classroom.

1.3. Learning Difficulties

Like all other students, Benjie has his own learning difficulties that
hinder him to fulfill the totality of his learning’s. He learned it hard to study
English subject in school. Based on the site
(www.open.ac.uk/skillsforstudy/difficulties-with-english), “people may find
English a challenge to learn because it is not their first language.”

Benjie also admitted that he does not come up in terms of

memorization. He does not tend to remember information easily that has a
big effect on his studies. According to Pauk, Walter, “Memory, itself probably
cannot be developed; however, improvement in remembering comes from
correcting to its fullest potential. Remembering is like seeing, improvement
in either functions does not depend upon how much we use it but, rather,
how we use it.”

The site (http://www.scrips.worc.ac.uk/challenges/memory.html) stated

that, “poor memorization can also have other causes such as inattention,
language difficulties and general learning difficulties.”

V. Learning Interventions

We have different ways on how we easily acquire learning. We do such

things where we do prefer to learn effortlessly. I conducted interviews to the
persons who I think that will help me to discover what kind of techniques that
Benjie usually used to make his studies more unconstrained.

According to his grandmother, Mrs. Carmelita Galvez, “He prefers to

study alone when he is at home. He works in quiet areas to minimize hearing
music, television or other distractions.” The same information which I had
gathered to his English Teacher, Mrs. Teodora Mabanta, she stated that,
“Benjie usually sits in front of the room for him to hear well on my discussion.
Through that, I observed that he won’t be distracted by the noise that his
classmates make.”

This was strongly supported by Michael Klymkowsky, professor and Co-

Director of CU Teach. According to him, “The environment which students are
in impacts not only how they study, but what they study. Different
environments offer a different vibes, and thus promote different moods.
Some students find they easily distracted and will therefore find the need to
be in quiet place, such as the library.”
However, research shows according to Henry S. Tenedero, “many
students prefer to listen to a lecture, or a study on their own, with some
background music on.”

Moreover, when it comes to the way on what technique he does on

reviewing his lessons for the upcoming examination. He chose the strategy of
cramming. He tends to retain the knowledge on his mind when he reviewed
minutes before the allotted time of the examination. He can easily retrieve
information because it were all fresh stored on his mind.

Maryellen Weimer, PhD in Teaching and Learning stated that,

“Students crammed just as often for essay exams as they did for multiple-
choice exams. There is a bit of cause for optimism to the students because
cramming is an appealing alternative.” That’s the reason why some students
choose rather to cram because they viewed it as an alternative one of
reviewing.

According to Kimberly Smith, “There are many ways to study at the

last minute. The way a student chooses to study should depend on their
learning style. There is a way for every student to cram no matter if they set
information to memory writing, acting, listening, visual, or memory tricks.”

Benjie usually relied on computer for researches asking for help on his
studies. Based on a new study by researchers of Boston College and the
University of Massachusetts at Lowell, “regular use of computers can have an
effect on student performance on standardized tests.”

VI. Conclusions

Based on my studies and observations on the learning aspect of Benjie M.

Galvez, I found out his styles of learning. Being alone in studying may help
students to give his/her quite focus on specific matter. Some would find it
effective on learning to avoid distractions because some learners want a
peace of mind to build encouragement on them to get more attach on the
certain topic.
Cramming is one of his ways to make his studies easier because he did
believe that the information he just stored recently would be easy for him to
decode because they were fresh encoded to his mind.

He preferred to be an Audio Learner which his listening skill is the majority

need to acquire learning because this kind of the learning style is the one he
was used to. He is good in Mathematics that serves as his main ability in
studying. He has his own difficulties like memorizing and having proficiency
in English matters.

I therefore conclude that his style of learning is good enough for him to be
a better student. It suited on his capacities to develop his abilities. My subject
made a good choice on how to vest a best foundation to make his learning
quite effective than the others.

VII. Recommendations

This study based on the findings may reflect on the different strategies
of the students on acquiring knowledge.

Cramming is not a strategy that enhances long-term learning and

retention. For me, last minute cramming is not recommended way of
studying. Early preparation is always the best way to obtain good grades.

I recommend that students, who find Mathematics and Memorization

difficult, do such ways to remedy the inabilities to attain contentment and
to avoid the widespread fears on learning that kind of subject matter.
It is better for the students to choose and use right learning styles to
achieve the satisfying results of their performances that will set as guide
to their future.
