What is Medford Voc. Tech H.S.?

We are a four year public high school located in Medford, Massachusetts. We offer eleven Career and Technical Education
Programs approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. All academic courses are
offered at the college preparatory/standard level of instruction. In grade 10, students are scheduled for 4 periods of aca-
demics a day and 2 periods of shop a day. In grades 11 and 12 students alternate between
shop week and academic week. All sophomore students participate in the Massachusetts
Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) testing in English Language Arts, Mathematics,
and Science.

What is a Construction Craft Laborer (CCL)?

He or she is part of a team, working in North America’s largest industry - the construction
industry. The skills of the CCL are diverse, requiring classroom instruction and hands-on train-
ing. Because of the diversity, the CCL is often the first craft on the project and the last to
leave. To be a good CCL requires physical strength, reading and math skills, and the ability
to make decisions. The CCL needs to be able to work on his own and on a team to complete
the job.

As a CCL, what kind of work will I do?

The kind of work you will do depends on your knowledge and skill level and the type of
work needed at a job site. You may build and repair roads, highways, bridges and tunnels,
construct residential and commercial buildings, clean up hazardous waste sites, or perform other tasks. Among the tasks a CCL
performs are: drilling and blasting site areas, building scaffolds, preparing and cleaning up a job site, laying pipe under-
ground, placing concrete, flagging and controlling traffic on highways, and removing asbestos and lead from buildings.

How do I learn the skills?

Medford Voc. Tech High School partners with the Laborers International Union of North America, The New England Labor-
ers in Hopkinton, MA and Local 22 of the Construction & General Laborers’
Union in Malden, Massachusetts to provide learning skills in the classroom
and on job sites.
