Birdspotting: Parkgate Primary School had a fantastic time when they took
part in the National Schools Birdwatch, the world’s biggest birdwatch! The

‘Oldies’ get their chance on the pitch

A five-a-side Veterans football league will be launched at Neston Recreation Centre in
March and will continue throughout the summer months. The over 35’s league, which
will be based at the Recreation Centre, will begin on 1st March at 7pm.
The Sport Development team is looking to recruit a minimum number of four teams to
play at Neston Recreation Centre, where all of the games will be held.
Neston and Parkgate Councillor Brenda Dowding said: “This is a wonderful way to
keep fit, and I believe it to be an idea that is really going to take off.
“This could present a marvellous opportunity for kids to take their dads to football and
maybe take their turn at standing on the sidelines offering good advice.”
Steve Butterfield, Sports Development Officer, added: “As part of Cheshire West and
Chester Council’s ‘Back to Sport’ scheme, the veterans’ football league is designed to
re-introduce adults back to sport they once played or have developed an interest in.”
Teams are invited to register their interest and sign up as soon as possible via www.

Kind donations
It is with great pleasure that I have to thank the people from Heswall and the locality for
their generosity in donating money to our charity at a collection outside Tesco store in
Heswall. We raised over £1200 and this will be dispersed between Sea Cadets, Sea
Scouts, Chance of a Lifetime Venture, Maritime Volunteer Service, UK Blind Sailing
School and the Liverpool Seafarers Centre at our annual presentation of Grants at
Westbourne Hall on Friday 1st April 2011 at 6pm. If you think your charity could benefit

Burn calories Nordic style

PEOPLE are invited to take part in a series of taster sessions for the next activity
gathering popularity and pace – Nordic Walking.
Nordic Walking differs from ordinary walking in that participants carry poles similar to
those used in snow. The activity burns up to 46 per cent more calories than walking
because of the additional upper body muscle usage. It can also help to relieve and
improve neck, back and joint pain by improving posture.
To book a place on the taster sessions please contact Jane Harding on 0779 857
5353. A free taster session takes place on Tuesday, 1st March at Parkgate, Wirral Way
car park near the Cricket Club 1:30-2:30pm with the six week course beginning on
Tuesday 8th March.

Best foot forward

Neston & District Christian Aid Committee are organising their annual sponsored
walk on Saturday 12th March. The walk starts from the United Reformed Church Hall,
Moorside Lane, Parkgate at 9am. The seven-mile walk goes along the Wirral Way,
across the golf course to Gayton, down Cottage Lane to return along the Dee shore,
where we turn left by the old baths car park to return to the Wirral Way. Contact Lynne
Vaughan on 0151 336 8920.

Pupils shine in car wash challenge

Recently staff and pupils from Neston Primary School, Burton Road rolled up their
sleeves and put their wellies on to take part in a car wash for school funds.
Although it was very wet they managed to clean over 60 cars in the three hours. A
small army of parents, pupils, staff and friends washed cars, vans and even a bicycle!
Due to the wintery weather recently, there were a few very dirty vehicles, but they all
left gleaming!
The money used
will help to ensure
that the cost of
residential visits are
kept at an affordable
level, allowing as
many children as
possible to take
part. “Our thanks
to everyone who
came along and
allowed us to wash
their vehicles. We
really do appreciate
your support.” said
Headteacher Rob
Golding

THE ORGANIC - AND CHEAPER - ALTERNATIVE

IT is important to feel a connection with, and trust in the food we eat, and New Year is a great time to
make a difference to your families.
The award winning Riverford Organic Vegetable Box Scheme makes life easy, forget your regular
supermarket trip and let Riverford Organic on Stockley Farm deliver
straight to your door. You don’t even need to be at home to collect your
delivery and you can order weekly, fortnightly or as a one off – whatever
suits you.
There is a wide range of box sizes to choose from starting at £9.85, and
you can add any extra produce you like to your order including eggs,
milk, meat, wine, beer and chocolate!
Ordering a vegbox from Riverford will not only guarantee a healthy
start to the New Year but you could save money. In a recent comparison Riverford vegboxes come out
at around 20% cheaper than organic food at the supermarket, breaking the myth that organic vegbox
schemes are more expensive. Also we won’t just drop off a load of veg leaving you wondering what to do
with it; in each vegbox is a recipe card which comes with up to 6 tasty recipes to get you started.
A Riverford Organic vegbox is an easy and affordable way to feed your family a healthier, fresher diet of
seasonal organic vegetables, and for the New Year we are offering all new customers a 3 for the price of 2
offer. For more information visit our website www.riverford.co.uk/stockley or call our friendly customer
service team who will help you with any questions you may have on 01565 724506.

Stage is set for

drama awards
They’re at it again! Following on from last year’s four
nominations at the 2010 NODA North West Amateur
Theatre Awards, the Neston Players were recently
delighted to find out that they have no fewer than five
nominations for the 2011 awards event!
Covering an area stretching from Cheshire to
Cumbria, the awards are held annually to celebrate
and recognise amateur dramatic productions right
across the North West.
Not unlike ‘The King’s Speech’ at the forthcoming Oscars, the Players production of
‘Shadowlands’ will be seeking its own ‘clean sweep’ of success at the annual awards
dinner, which will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Blackpool in May. The hopefuls this year
include:
Best Actress (Drama): Suzi Grenfell for ‘Joy Gresham’ in ‘Shadowlands’
Best Actor (Drama): Michael Kennedy for ‘CS Lewis’ in ‘Shadowlands’
Best Supporting Actor (Drama): Gordon Wallis for ‘Warnie’ in ‘Shadowlands’
Best Director (Drama): Paul Kirkbright for
‘Shadowlands’
Best Play: ‘Shadowlands’
Whilst last year the Players came away
empty handed, they are keeping their fingers
crossed for this year’s awards night.
Chairman, Paul Kirkbright said: “Neston
Players are delighted to be nominated
for these prestigious regional awards. To
receive one or two nominations would
have been great, but to get five this year
after four last year is quite unbelievable
and really reflects the hard work and effort
the membership puts into each and every
production.
“With exciting productions planned for the
forthcoming year we are looking forward to
building on these achievements, starting
in May with our next production the Oscar
Wilde inspired comedy ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s
Crime’”.
