What makes a great program?

Key Notes/ Random Thoughts (Coach Meyer jumped around a lot with topics and these are those
examples)

* It doesn¶t matter what your program is as long as you have one.

* Teammates. ???????

* Great Football Coaches don¶t get over looked.

* Have a firm conviction and belief in what you do.

* Don¶t give uneducated opinions. Back up your opinion with evidence to support it. Do not just
say we should do X and Y without being able to answer why. (This is one of my favorites)

* If you want to get good at something be an expert at it.

Exercise

Coach Meyer did this while he was a Head Coach. He asked his Position Coaches to tell him
what their ³Core Values´ are. Made them display their ³Core Values´ in the position meeting
rooms and held them accountable for them. Example he gave was if a RB Coach said his core
value was ball security and Coach Meyer saw a player not holding the ball correctly then he will
inform the position coach that he is not teaching his core value.

Prepare for the ³What If´

I will paraphrase this. Coach Meyer explained that it is easy to prepare for the moments when
everything is going right, but how do you prepare for the ³What If´ moments.

Theory to help you prepare for the ³What if´ moment¶s

rpose ± You have to have a purpose. (Coach Meyer expanded on purpose more, but I did not
catch it)
ÿmotion   Control your emotions in those ³what if moments´. Good exercise to help you learn
how to control your emotions. If you are having a bad day, think of 10 things you are grateful
for.

EDIT 3/26/2011. One day after seeing Coach Meyer present this at the ND Clinic I have already
implemented this in my daily routine with great success so far. Example; I have not slept for 2
nights AT ALL! Not one minute of sleep. I am tired, grouchy and easily agitated (more than
usual). I have no patience for slow people. Twice in line today at 2 different locations I was
behind extremely slow people with no sense of urgency what so ever. Both times as I felt
agitated I thought to myself ³There was a time in my life not too long ago that I could not afford
these small items I was about to purchase or the gas in my vehicle to get to South Bend. I was
thankful for these things and then as I thought of new things others just seem to pop up. Try this
it works!

Gift of compassion   Always try to find ways to give back.

Mentality   Keep yourself mentally under control during those ³What If Moments´

hysically in shape   What you put into your body is just as important as physical exercise.

If you are unhappy with where you are at and what¶s going on then change what you are doing!

Why is it hard to change?

Change involves risk and discomfort. The more you change the more risk you have.

Help your players change by giving them a small victory. It could change their whole perception
of themselves.

Don¶t be a presenter as a Football Coach, be a teacher.

4 steps to being a great teacher

1.| Clear ± Know your job description.

2.| Clean ± Work with the best possible equipment you can get. Keep things clean and
organized
3.| Concise ± Break it down to the smallest point
4.| Direct   The ability of the player to recite back what you have taught them.

*Believe exactly what is being taught

Jeaching progression

a.| Install ± Explain what you want done.

b.| Video ± Have a video of what you want installed.
c.| Body Reps ± Physically do it. Walk through.
d.| Quiz   Take it to the practice field and ask them questions about it.
e.| Rep as a group.
f.| Rep with scouts.
g.| Rep live.

Have a plan in place.

ºelieve in the plan.

a.| Time tested

b.| Stats
c.| Testimonials

To back up your plan.

Sell the plan constantly. Demand everyone follows your plan.

How does your team present itself?

During pregame shirts tucked in, no horseplay, act like Champion¶s and present yourself as
Champion¶s.

Interesting stat.

9 out of 10 times if you block a punt in a game you will win!
