pickup trucks on Monday and
peppering every available patch
of grass with election signs, Peter
Tam hired a pair of social market-
ing professionals.
The Green Party candidate is
gearing up to “explode” online.
“We are not going to pollute
the environment with all kinds of
junk out there,” he said.
“Here’s a way we can shift to a
more environmentally friendly
way of getting our messages
out.”
The 41st federal election, or
#elxn41, is one that’s being fought
through social media, a platform
that has the potential to reach
more than 16 million Canadians
with the click of a mouse.
After the election was called
Saturday, the hashtag #elxn41
was soon a trending topic on
Twitter across the country. (It’s
since been by #idontunderstand-
why, #dontactlikeyounever and
#hoodphrases)
It’s why every political party
has been trying to lasso online
followers, with incessant tweets,
YouTube videos, even a Jack Lay-
ton app.
The Green Party, though, is the
only one that’s provided local
candidates with a guide on how
to harness the medium, as well as
ideas on what to post and tweet.

Recall recalled
The Done with Dalton recall campaign has been
recalled.
Instead, organizers are going to concentrate
their efforts on battling the HST leading up to the
June 24 mail-in vote.
But that only proves further that the true motiva-
tion behind the recall campaign had nothing to do
with the performance of individual Liberal MLAs,
only that petitioners were picking on the most vul-
nerable ones, like Marc Dalton, who won the last
provincial election by just 68 votes.
Most curious, local recall organizers didn’t know
how many signatures they had when they decided
to fold up their tents.
Of course, they said the campaign was going
well.
B.C. is the only province in Canada with recall
legislation, and maybe now we know why: while
an available and potentially useful tool, like a ham-
mer it can be used for malice. It has yet to be suc-
cessful.
Voters in Dalton’s riding of Pitt Meadows-Maple
Ridge-Mission will still get to show their content-
ment with the job he has done in the next elec-
tion.
Rhetoric will persist throughout the lead up to
the HST mail-in and an election, and the govern-
ing Liberals, new leader and all, will be held to ac-
count.
But there will be other, more pressing issues to
debate than just the HST; Christy Clark can’t write
a cheque to everyone and expect there to be none.
Until then, we will be happily distracted by the
federal election, then the municipal ones.

The provincial Liberals, for now, have bought
themselves some time.
Politics is a shrewd business, as evidenced by the
looming Liberal-NDP-Bloc coalition in the federal
realm, and the provincial recall attempts.
So pay attention. Vote for what really matters to

wage to $10.25 isn’t good enough. Candi-
date Nicholas Simons tried to raise his
profile by suggesting that it should be
hiked 50 per cent, to $12.
Heck, why not raise it to $20? If you’re
stuck in the ’70s and can’t comprehend
the downside of state-imposed prosper-
ity, why not just make poverty history?
Federal NDP leader Jack Layton
informed an anxious nation that he
wouldn’t support the Conservative bud-
get because it doesn’t “lift all seniors
out of poverty” or “create” enough doc-
tors so everyone can have one.

Mind you, they get paid $25 a month in
addition to their food ration cards, so
perhaps that socialist Utopia should
raise its minimum wage.
I watched another ’70s show last week,

“When we walked over, the fire wasn’t at the ga-
rage yet, it was just starting to burn,” Pancoust said
outside the house as firefighters battled the flames.
A man who lives in the house escaped with no inju-
ries and a cat was rescued by firefighters.
Assistant fire chief Timo Jurrakko said investiga-
tors have determined the fire started in the shed.
“We couldn’t find a specific determining factor, but
it is definitely accidental, nothing suspicious,” he
added.

Johnson Brothers Burnin Diesel
Siblings ready to release their
first full-length album

rett and Trent Johnson have
been on stage since they
were kids. The grandsons
of Canadian Country Music Hall
of Fame member Elmer Tippe and
nephews to multi-award winner
Rick Tippe, the pair have melody in
their genes.
“Growing up around music, it was
hard not to get into it,” says Brett
Johnson who began playing coun-
try bars with his younger brother
at age 15.
By the time, the pair hit 20, they
had played every country bar in
the Fraser Valley, creating an en-
ergetic and popular live show that
features songs by legends like Buck
Owens, Merle Haggard and Waylon
Jennings as well as contemporary
artists like Toby Keith, Brad Pais-
ley and Keith Urban.
But playing tunes written by oth-
er people’s did little to satisfy their
creative appetites.
In 2008, the Johnson Brothers
began writing and recording their
first album Burnin Diesel, an opus
that features nine original songs
and just one cover, but took almost
three years to complete.
Their first single from the album,
“Devil’s Highway” is already on ro-
tation Country 107.1 in Abbotsford.
Brett says it’s a sound that’s isn’t
usually heard on country radio.

a little bit different from what you
hear on country radio right now.”

Burnin Diesel tips a hat to the sib-
lings’ musical influences, which
range far further than country.
“Everyone thinks because we are

Tippe’s nephews all we listen to is
country,” says Brett.
“But we’ve been influenced by a
lot of rock bands.”
He counts AC/DC and Bon Jovi as
inspirations.
Having their own space to record
allowed the brothers time to per-
fect the album, it also allowed them
to develop as a band, that includes
their dad Ken on bass guitar and
Jason Cooper on lead guitar.
“Using our own band, instead of
studio musicians has allowed us
as a band to create these songs to-
gether,” says Brent.
“What you hear on the album is
going to be identical to what you
hear on stage. We were able to cre-
ate an album that we believe in, that
will be right for us. Hopefully our
audience will feel the same way.”

It’s been a long road to the NHL for
Patrick Wiercioch. But after stops in the
BCHL, U.S. junior leagues, the NCAA,
and the AHL, the Maple Ridge defence-
man stepped onto the ice for the first time
as an NHL hockey player last Tuesday in
Carolina, wearing No. 46 for the Ottawa
Senators.
Wiercioch, 20, was called up last week
after a concussion to Sergei Gonchar
created an opening in the Sens’ roster.
In four appearances with Ottawa so far,
Wiercioch has managed to earn a plus-
one rating, and registered his first NHL
point in a 5-4 shoot-out loss to the Atlanta
Thrashers Sunday night.
“If someone had told me 14 years ago
this would happen, I’d never believe it,”
says Wiercioch’s father, Andrew.
He and Wiercioch’s mother, Ewa, tried
to fly to Carolina to witness their son’s
first game. After racing to Seattle on the
off chance a seat might be available, they
had to settle instead for a 3 a.m. flight to
New York to see his second game, Thurs-
day night against the Rangers at Madison
Square Gardens.
“It was probably a good thing,” says
Andrew. “He was nervous, and he did not
play very good.”
Wiercioch finished the game in Caro-
lina with a minus-two rating after 10 min-
utes of ice time.
Things improved over Wiercioch’s next
three games, as he earned a plus-three
rating and was rewarded with more ice
time.
At six-foot-four and 185 pounds,
Wiercioch still has some filling out to do,
but his speed, size, and his passing abil-
ity appear to be serving him well.

Andrew never played hockey, and still
doesn’t know how to skate. In communist
Poland, ice skates were a luxury his fam-
ily couldn’t afford, costing two months of
his father’s wages.
So, wanting a better life for their chil-
dren, Andrew and Ewa came to Canada.
“You can get anything you want here,”
says Andrew. “It just depends how bad
you want it.”
Everything his family has accomplished
has been a product of their own hard
work, he says.
Andrew’s daughter Gabriella is study-
ing to be a nurse, and just arrived home
from volunteering in Zambia. The fam-
ily’s eldest son Christopher now runs the
family’s gas and welding supply compa-
ny.

“I am proud of all my children,” Andrew
says.
This summer Wiercioch plans to head
back to Denver to finish some of his re-
maining credits to get his degree in busi-
ness management. However, his focus
has always been playing NHL hockey.
“He’s happy to be playing in the big
league,” says Andrew. “He’s very excited.
There have been low points, but he has
worked very hard to get to where he is.”
Wiercioch got his start with the Ridge
Meadows Rockets, before moving to the
Burnaby Winter Club and the North
Shore Winter Club.
After playing junior A with the Co-
quitlam Express of the BCHL, Wiercioch
headed south of the border to the Oma-
ha Lancers of the USHL in the hopes of
attracting the attention of US college
