Vijendra, who presented a glimpse of various facets of Indian civilization and culture. He
emphasized that the diversification in the identity of Bharatvarsh has been continuous through
the millennia from the very beginning of the human civilization. The Chief Election
Commissioner Dr S Y Quraishi in his message as the Chief Guest elaborated on the rich

The Vice-Chancellor of Shobhit University, Prof Anoop Swarup, delivered the Theme Address and exhorted
everyone to join the movement for declaration of the various archaeological sites and remains in the region as
UNESCOs World Heritage. Her Holiness, Ganini Pramukh Aryikashiromani Gyanmati Mataji, gave her blessings
in inspiring words. Proceedings-cum-Souvenir of the Conference was released on the occasion by the famous
Japanese scholar Dr. Akash Ouchi, Asia Pacific Chair of Saka Gokkai International. At the close of the inaugural
session, Karmyogi Br. Ravindra Kumar Jain extended the vote of thanks to all the participants.

Workshop @ Shobhit University

One day workshop on “Recent Trends in Image Processing” was organized
by School of Electronics Engineering (SEE), Shobhit University, Meerut on 23
October, 2010. The Chief Guest of the workshop, Shri. P. K. Mahapatra, IAS,
Chief Resident Commissioner, Govt of Haryana, addressed the delegates
and inspired the students to take science to new levels through hardwork and
innovation. Prof. (Dr.) Sankar Sarkar, Director, SEE and Convener of the
conference highlighted the importance of novel image processing in real time
processing. Shri. Kunwar Shekhar Vijendra, Prof. Anoop Swarup and Prof.
R.P. Agarwal shared their views with the audience. Prof. S.S. Pattnaik from
NITTTR Chandigarh apprised the audience on “Nature Inspired Computing

for Image and Video Processing”. Prof. Ekram Khan from AMU delivered talk on “Advances in Biomedical Image Processing”. Dr. Swapna Devi
from NITTTR, Chandigarh shared her thought on “Science of Heart To Mind: A New Approach In Image Processing”. Dr. Ajay Garg from DRDO,
Dehradun talked on “Infrared Image Processing Requirements and Future Trends”. Ms. Anamika Singh from School of Electronics
Engineering, Shobhit University, presented her views on "Role On Wavelet Transform in Image Compression”. The workshop included poster

presentation competition in which students presented posters on diverse fields. Shreeraj of B.Tech, III Semester was awarded the best poster
prize. More than 350 participants including Faculty and Students from reputed institutions of the region participated in the workshop.

was created amongst students regarding job opportunities in the field of Environmental, Agricultural, Clinical Biotechnology,

Science Corner: News from the world of Science & Technology
A recent study showed that compared with an older drug called quinine, a new one called artesunate reduces the risk of death
from severe malaria in African children by 23%a finding that could save tens or even hundreds thousands of lives annually.
Malaria kills up to a million people every year. Most are African children. In its early stages, the disease can be treated with pills,
but in severe cases drugs need to be given intravenously or via an intramuscular injection. The most widely used drug for this
purpose until now was the centuries-old quinine, derived from the bark of a South American tree; no modern drug had worked
better. But in 2005, a large study in four Asian countries showed that injections of artesunate reduced deaths from severe
malaria by 35% over quinine. (Artesunate is part of a drug family derived from Artemisia annua, a plant that has long been used
in Chinese medicine.) Since then, several Asian countries have started replacing quinine with artesunate for severe malaria.

But it was unclear if the results would translate to Africa, where the population has a different genetic makeup and is generally
more likely to be exposed to malaria. For the new trial, 5425 children less than 15 years of age who had severe malaria were
enrolled. Of the children who received quinine, 10.9% died; in the artesunate group, 8.5% died. If all African children with
severe malaria would receive artesunate in time, between 100,000 and 200,000 lives could have been saved annually.
