prize. More than 350 participants including Faculty and Students from reputed institutions of the region participated in the workshop.

attended the inauguration of Quantum NanoScientfic Indo
Asian Center for Nanotechnology at Bangalore on October
27, 2010. The Centre was inaugurated by Shri Katta
Subramanyam Naidu, Minister for IT, BT, SWSSB and
Housing, Government of Karnataka. Prof. Swarup and Prof.
Dutta were the Distinguised Guest and Guest of Honour,
respectively in the inaugural function. Prof. Swarup
delivered a special lecture on “Commercialization and
Opportunities in Nanotechnology” at the inaugural session
and Prof. Dutta delivered the valedictory lecture on “Recent
Advances in Nanobiotechnology” during the conference,
‘NanoTechnology: Current Research Trends and
Commercialization’.
But it was unclear if the results would translate to Africa, where the population has a different genetic makeup and is generally
more likely to be exposed to malaria. For the new trial, 5425 children less than 15 years of age who had severe malaria were
enrolled. Of the children who received quinine, 10.9% died; in the artesunate group, 8.5% died. If all African children with
severe malaria would receive artesunate in time, between 100,000 and 200,000 lives could have been saved annually.
