NUCLEAR POWER IN FRANCE

Nuclear power is nowadays one of the most common sources of electricity generation in the world
with about 16% of world electricity is produced by 450 reactors all over the world. In particular, in
France, it provides the people with 80 % of the country’s electricity. For the past twenty years, with
an intense program of nuclear power plant construction, France has been leading the world in the
production of nuclear energy for electricity generation. That enables France to reduce its
dependency on foreign energy sources and to ensure security of electricity supply. Moreover, the
nuclear industry also limits to generate the gas who is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse
effect.
As regards the electric production, it is estimated that there are more than 100.000 persons in
France. This would then solve the unemployment problem.

industry in France, including the design of nuclear reactors, the use of radionuclide for medical
treatments…
-In 1956, a secret Committee for the Military Applications of Atomic Energy was formed and a
development program for delivery vehicles started
-The first French power plant was opened in 1965.
-By the 1970's and the oil crisis 1973, France began an intensive program to build nuclear power
plants in order to limit its dependence on imported oil. Responsibility for the program was given to
EDF(electricity de France)
-In 2001, Areva, was created by the merger of CEA Industrie, Framatome and Cogema
