Vibration analysis has developed into an excellent technique for not only monitoring the health of machinery to
prevent unexpected failures and promote reliability but also as a means of troubleshooting. It is essential that all
expensive and/or critical equipment undergo vibration monitoring and analysis. The primary obstacle to imple-
menting a successful “vibration program” is inadequate training.
Machinery vibration issues are much more complex than commonly recognized.
• Accessories: Accelerometers, proximity probes, multi-channel signal conditioners, power supplies, strobe, digital
tachometer with analog output for triggering, alignment kit, shaft straightness measurement kit.
• Hands-on Course: How to use Machinery Fault Simulator in conjunction with the training program, offered at SQI
or customer’s facility.
Machinery Fault Simulator
Spectra Quest’s Machinery Fault Simulator is an innovative tool that you can use to study the signatures of common
machinery faults without compromising your production schedule or profits. The bench-top system has a spacious modular
design featuring versatility, operational simplicity, and robustness. Studies can be conducted with application specific kits.
The kits typically include shaft/coupling misalignment, balance, bearings (rolling element and sleeve), cocked/eccentric rotor,
bent shaft, resonance, mechanical rub, belt, gearing, reciprocating mechanism and centrifugal pump. In addition, kits support
induction motor faults such as misaligned rotor, bowed rotor, broken rotor bars, etc.
The machine is an excellent platform for examining sensor and signal processing issues along with operating deflection shape
and modal analysis. Each component is machined to high tolerances, so it can be operated without conflicting vibration.
Depending on the situation, you can introduce various faults either individually or jointly in a totally controlled environment.
Hands-on, controlled experiments are the
key to learning
Vibration Analysis and Laboratory Exercises Books
These manuals have been written to be a self-paced study course in ap-
plied vibration analysis with laboratory exercises conducted on the Ma-
chinery Fault Simulator to enhance the learning process and encourage
experimentation. Many years of industrial and academic expertise are
incorporated in these books. Also, included are student work booklets
for individualized lab exercises.
Measurement System
VibraQuest, the measurement system, is advanced data acquisition hard-
ware, analysis, reporting, and education software designed for machinery
vibration diagnostics and modeling to reveal root causes. This is a unique
integrated hardware/software system developed especially for instruc-
tion in machinery diagnostics using the SpectraQuest Machinery Fault
Simulator (MFS). It incorporates three modules:
• Multi-channel DAQ: Very high resolution, high speed, simulta-
neous sampling, 8/16/24 channels. All of the DAQ software and
hardware are integrated into a Dell PC.
• Educational software: Interactive dynamic system model for learn-
ing vibration concepts, effects of damping/stiffness/mass on reso-
nance, digital signal processing issues such as leakage, aliasing,
windowing, noise reduction, averaging, etc., and model representa-
tion of machine components.
• Analysis and modeling software: Full featured dynamic signal
data reduction; experimental parameter modeling from DAQ to extract Single degree of freedom spring-mass dash-pot model to
and develop a full model to reveal cause and effect relationship of learn dynamics of machine components.
data; can automatically reduce large volumes of data to manageable
results; reports are generated and downloaded to Word or equivalent
as data is analyzed to prevent loss of thoughts and save enormous
time.
Accessories
Spectra Quest has included many of the most common accessories required to
perform machinery diagnosis and rotor dynamics experiments. Accessories in-
clude shaft straightness & rotor weave measurement kits, shaft alignment tool
kits, accelerometers, mounting blocks, promixity probes, digital stroboscopes,
tachometers, and motor current measurement devices.
Hands-On Course
The student is presented with a hands-on oppor-
tunity to configure/adjust the Machinery Fault
Simulator for exercises in common defects such
as alignment, balance, bearings, eccentricity, rub,
bent shaft, looseness, resonance, gearing, belt,
etc. The simulator will be instrumented and some
data collected to assure confidence in develop-
ing and conducting basic laboratory experiments.
Completion of this session will enable the stu-
dent to conduct and design experiments on the
MFS as well as to develop a variety of courses
and conduct research on machinery diagnostics.
Other courses are also offered separately, to provide further instruction in vibration analysis. These
courses include:
