Work Study & Apprenticeships (Strategy 19)

"... measurements and angles in the textbook meant nothing to him until he began to
use these concepts in his real-life profession of construction." (Tate, 2010)

Work Study & Apprenticeship

• Learn from observations
• See something done, try it with guidance, & get immediate feedback -
• Obvious relevance :\

Benefits
• Help get students ready for the workplace.
• See how things apply to real-life & that you might actually use what you are
learning gains value and importance, becomes relevant.

Cognitive Apprenticeship
• Make classroom learning more similar to apprenticeship type learning (make
it more visible) • - • ^ - -:v,i., , .

• Model the skill, provide scaffolding, be explicit with how to perform the
steps, then support less and less as the students' skills improve

Goals for the Classroom

• Show students how classroom learning is relevant to their real world
• Give students the chance to use their new knowledge in real-life situations &
to solve real life problems
• Help close gap between skills needed to succeed in school life versus work
life.
• Interest and motivation increases when students see that a subject relates to
other subjects or to the real world.
• Authentic, real-world tasks develop strong neural networks.
• Decrease anxiety & fears around a subject by using concrete examples to help
grasp abstract concepts
• Get students to actively participate in their learning
