BusinessObjects Enterprise
BusinessObjects Enterprise has undergone a user interface refresh. Both
the InfoView application and the Central Management Console (CMC) have
new and improved workflows.

Publishing
BusinessObjects Enterprise now supports publications that contain Crystal
reports or Web Intelligence documents, as well as publications that contain
multiple dynamic content documents. BusinessObjects Enterprise also
features the following improvements to the Publishing feature:
• Enhanced processing capabilities.
• The ability to publish to multiple formats and destinations.
• PDF merging capabilities for Crystal reports.
• The ability to publish separate report tabs in Desktop Intelligence and
Web Intelligence documents.
• Support for customized publication extensions.
• Improved profile and personalization functionality.

22 What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0

New features in existing products
BusinessObjects Enterprise 6
• Support for publication recipients that exist outside of the BusinessObjects
Enterprise system.
• Delivery rules that can be used to conditionalize the processing and
distribution of publications for recipients.
For more information about Publishing, see the BusinessObjects Enterprise
Publisher's Guide.

Access levels
This release of BusinessObjects Enterprise lets you create and maintain
access levels that are customized for your deployment and security needs.
Access levels are groups of rights that users frequently need. They allow
administrators to set common security levels quickly and uniformly rather
than requiring that individual rights be set one by one.

For more information about working with access levels, see Chapter 17:
Setting Rights in the BusinessObjects Enterprise Administrator's Guide.

Server Intelligence
Server Intelligence is the underlying server management architecture that
simplifies the administration and deployment of BusinessObjects Enterprise
servers and services. Instead of manually administering servers via the
Central Configuration Manager (CCM), you now handle most server
administration through the Central Management Console (CMC), which has
a new easier-to-use interface.

Server Intelligence allows you to use the CMC for all daily maintenance
tasks, such as adding and configuring new servers, or starting and stopping
existing servers. And it also allows you to automate certain server processes,
such as restarting or shutting down servers that stop unexpectedly. If the
CMS database connection is lost, the CMS now automatically attempts to
reconnect.

Server Intelligence also manages server configuration information, storing

it in the CMS so you can easily restore default server settings or create
duplicate 'clone' servers with the same settings. Server configuration settings
can be backed up in a BIAR file and easily restored. You can use these new
features to create configuration templates that allow you to ensure that
servers of a particular type are configured consistently.

The new Adaptive Processing Servers and Adaptive Job Servers host multiple
services, allowing for more flexible deployment and fine-tuned configuration.

What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0 23

6 New features in existing products
BusinessObjects Enterprise

Server Intelligence enhancements also simplify the configuration of complex

BusinessObjects Enterprise deployments with a firewalled environment.

All of these features make it easier to fine-tune your system's performance

and fault tolerance.

For more information about Server Intelligence, see Chapter 6: Managing

and Configuring Servers in the BusinessObjects Enterprise Administrator's
Guide.

Federation
Federation is an important cross-site replication tool for working with
BusinessObjects Enterprise in a global environment. Content can be created
and managed on one BusinessObjects Enterprise deployment and replicated
on a recurring schedule to other BusinessObjects Enterprise deployments.
Federation helps to keep separate BusinessObjects Enterprise content in
sync with each other. Users can reduce network traffic by using Federation.
They only need to create content in a single place, can manage it all in one
place, and increase their performance for end users as they don't need to
traverse the WAN to access reports.

For more information about Federation, see Chapter 7: Working with

Federation in the BusinessObjects Enterprise Administrator's Guide.

Repository Diagnostic Tool

The Repository Diagnostic Tool is designed to help customers determine if
there are any inconsistencies between the File Repository Server (FRS) and
their Central Management System (CMS) databases. To determine
synchronization between the two databases, it is used after the user
completes a hot back up.

For more information about the Repository Diagnostic Tool, see the
BusinessObjects Enterprise Repository Diagnostic Tool User's Guide.

Software Inventory Tool

The BusinessObjects Enterprise Software Inventory Tool is a Java-based
maintenance tool available to administrators. It creates and maintains an
inventory of all changes made to Business Objects software via Business
Objects installers and allows users to view these changes.

Multi-language support with Translation Manager 6
For more information about the Software Inventory Tool, see the
BusinessObjects Enterprise Software Inventory Tool User's Guide.

Auditing
BusinessObjects Enterprise now supports auditing for clients. For example,
a user can audit events that occur on Desktop Intelligence and Web
Intelligence clients, including refresh and schedule operations. Auditing
events include detailed information, such as SQL queries and parameters.

The Auditing Universe was extended, and new auditing reports were added.

For improved security auditing, the IP address and machine name are now
audited.

Multi-language support with Translation

Manager
Translation Manager is a standalone Windows-only application that creates
the multilingual universes and Web Intelligence reports. You can use the
tool to perform translations in-house or via a third-party vendor using the
Import/Export XLIFF capabilities. Translations of report prompts and universe
metadata such as classes measures and prompts are saved inside the same
universe file or report. The locale management enables the user to decide
in which language they want to view the report or universe.

Translation Manager introduces these main benefits:

• Single universe file includes multiple languages
• Eases IT management across multiple regions
• Preserves data integrity across regions with everyone on the same
universe
• Improves user experience in all regions
• Report designers to work in their native language
• Report consumers view reports in the right language
• Recognizes the metadata parts of the document and the appropriate
translations for the selected languages.
• Displays the universe or Web Intelligence document structure to provide
context for the translator.

What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0 25

6 New features in existing products
Live Office

For more information and to get started, see Translation Manager online
help and the Translation Manager User's Guide.

Live Office
Live Office provides the following new features:

• Full Live Office functionality for MS Outlook. You can now insert Live
Office objects into an Outlook email.
• Live Office users can now copy and paste objects across MS Office
applications. Once an object is inserted into one MS Office application,
it can be reused through a simple copy and paste operation.
• Live Office supports MS Office 2007 and includes a special LiveOffice
ribbon menu
• Enhancements in Crystal Reports, Web Intelligence and Universe
Designer have been integrated into Live Office. The integrated
enhancements include support for optional parameters and prompts,
interactive parameters, universe ranking, universe sampling, SAP Key
Date.

Note: None of these are new Live Office features but enhancements that
have been integrated into Live Office.

For more information, refer to the product documentation and online help:
• Live Office Installation Guide - includes updates that apply to all
BusinessObjects Enterprise client applications
• Live Office User Guide - includes updated workflows, procedures and a
new 'Common tasks' section

Web Intelligence
Accessing Web Intelligence through InfoView
The new InfoView Web Intelligence options make selection of the appropriate
Web Intelligence XI 3.0 document creation, viewing and editing tool easier
by emphasizing the way in which you interact with Web Intelligence rather

than the tool you use. Based on your selections, InfoView selects the
appropriate tool for your document creation, viewing and editing needs.

For more information, see the Accessing Web Intelligence from InfoView
chapter in the Building Reports Using the Java Report Panel or Performing
On-Report Analysis With Web Intelligence guide

Web Intelligence Rich Client

The Web Intelligence Rich Client is a standalone version of the Web
Intelligence Java Report Panel which allows you to work with Web Intelligence
documents without accessing a CMS. You can also connect to a CMS and
use the Web Intelligence Rich Client as an online alternative to the Java
Report Panel.

In addition to the Java Report Panel features, the Web Intelligence Rich
Client allows you to create reports based on personal data providers such
as text or Excel files.

You can find information about Web Intelligence Rich Client in the Web
Intelligence Rich Client User's Guide.

Multilingual support
From the same report, you may decide in which available language you want
to view the report's metadata and prompts. You can add translations to the
universe on which the report is created or translate the report itself using the
Translation Manager. Once the document is translated, it is published and
available to users in their preferred viewing language.
Note: The data that appears in the report is dependent on the database
source and cannot be translated with the Translation Manager.

Smart measures
Web Intelligence XI 3.0 universes contain smart measures, which provide
an alternative to classic Web Intelligence universe measures by delegating
calculation of the measure values to the database. Smart measures allow
Web Intelligence to display calculations not directly supported by the Web
Intelligence universe, to work with non- or semi-aggregative measures, and
to leverage the calculation capabilities of any database accessible through
a Web Intelligence universe.

What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0 27

6 New features in existing products
Web Intelligence

You can find information about smart measures in the Calculating values
with smart measures chapter in the Using Functions, Formulas and
Calculations in Web Intelligence guide.

Optional prompts
Web Intelligence XI 3.0 optional prompts allow you to ignore a prompt by
not specifying a value. When you do not specify a value, the prompt does
not apply a filter on the data.

Formula language
The Web Intelligence XI 3.0 formula language contains several new functions,
including the ForceMerge function, which allows Web Intelligence to account
for merged dimensions when calculating measures. ForceMerge is the Web
Intelligence equivalent of the Business Objects/Desktop Intelligence Multi
cube function.

You can find information on Web Intelligence functions in the Using Functions,
Formulas and Calculations in Web Intelligence guide or by selecting
context-sensitive help from within the Formula Editor.

Data tracking
Data tracking places your current report data in context by highlighting
changed data and displaying the previous value of a dimension or measure
along with its current value. Web Intelligence XI 3.0 highlights changed data
according to parameters you set. You control the formatting of the changed
data, the types of changed data highlighted and the amount of data change
that triggers data highlighting.

You can find information on data tracking in the Tracking Changes in data
chapter in the Tracking changes in data chapter in the Building Reports Using
the Java Report Panel guide.

Document linking
Using Web Intelligence XI 3.0, you can now create links to other Web
Intelligence documents, to web sites, or to any resource accessible from a
Web Intelligence report using a simple user interface. You can also pass
data to the linked resource from within the Web Intelligence report.

Usability enhancements
Web Intelligence XI 3.0 contains numerous usability enhancements, including:
quick display mode (a new display mode designed to improve performance
when reports contain large amounts of data), layering, toolbar modifications,
alignment, embedded images and new filter workflows.

Query - HTML enhancements

Web Intelligence Query - HTML contains numerous enhancements bringing
its feature set closer to the feature set available in the Java Report Panel.
These enhancements include editable SQL, the ability to change the universe
on which a query is based, and the ability to save and close a query.

What's New in Crystal Reports 2008

New Crystal Reports 2008 provides advanced functionality to help reduce
report proliferation and maintenance, increase visualization flexibility, and
save time with high-productivity design features.

This section is an overview of the new features in Crystal Reports 2008.

Note: All the topics in this document are detailed in the Crystal Reports
Online Help. Search the help using the index or the Search tab for detailed
information on how to use the new functionality.

Advanced information visualization with Flash, Flex,

and Xcelsius

Note: Flash features are available for viewing only in the .NET Winform and
Java DHTML viewers.

Adobe Flash integration

A wide variety of flexible data presentation options are available through
Flash. Flash (SWF) files can now be integrated into your report, and report

6 New features in existing products
What's New in Crystal Reports 2008

data can be shared with the SWF via Flashvars. This feature enables the
creation of compelling, interactive, and information-rich reports. The SWF
files can be embedded in the report or linked via a website.

Xcelsius integration
Deliver professional-looking reports with powerful decision-making support.
Import Xcelsius-generated SWF files into your reports and benefit from
improved design-time integration and stunning visualizations. Enhance your
reports with what-if analysis models that enable users to make important
decisions dynamically, without leaving the report file.

Adobe Flex integration

Integrate your reports with operational workflows by embedding Adobe Flex
(SWF) applications into your reports. Using Adobe Flex Builder, you can
create any business-user UI that accesses report data and also integrates
with external web services. Data in your report can be passed to the Flex
application via Flashvars, making it easy to create flexible UI even when you
don't have web-services access to your data. The Flex applications can do
tasks like database write-back and can invoke operational workflows directly
within Crystal Reports.

Improved end-user report viewing experience

Interactive report viewing

Get more information out of your report. New on-report sorting, filtering, and
report reformatting with the .NET Winform, Java DHTML and .NET Webform
viewers let users explore information interactively without re-querying the
database. New optional parameters enable complex, user-driven filtering
scenarios. Users can answer more business questions with fewer, more
flexible, reports thereby significantly reducing Developer and IT support.

Parameter Panel
The report designer and the .NET Winform, Java DHTML, and .NET Webform
viewers now have a Parameter Panel that allows parameter values to be set
without refreshing data. The report consumer can easily see the parameters

New features in existing products
What's New in Crystal Reports 2008 6
used for a report on the panel, change them, and have the new values applied
directly to the saved data.

Flexible pagination
New pagination features allow report designers to customize page size and
easily control page breaking after N records/groups. A single report can
combine portrait- and landscape-oriented pages, and the white space at the
end of groups can be removed by compressing the page footers. These
features improve the online report-consumption experience by making reports
easier to read.

Enhanced report designer productivity

Powerful cross-tabs
Insert summary, variance, and any other custom calculation into a cross-tab
row or column. Custom calculations makes cross-tabs more powerful than
before and can be used in reports that benefit from a table
structure—especially financial reports. The cross-tab table structure makes
reports much faster to build and maintain. This feature also provides powerful
benefits to cross-tab-based charts, because custom formulas in the cross-tab
can be visualized directly in the charts.

Built-in barcode support

Generate barcodes with only a few clicks of the mouse by using the new
"Turn To Barcode" function in the context menu. Easily convert fields to
Code39 barcodes without coding and extra steps. Additional barcode fonts
are available from third-party barcode vendors.

Enhanced designer features

Improved report designer productivity is provided with new features such as
global formula search, duplicate formula, duplicate running total,
auto-complete field names, and Find in Field Explorer.

you open and save reports directly to crystalreports.com. This new integration
allows you to manage and share your reports securely with no dependency
on IT.

Improved XML exporting

Render reports in almost any industry-standard format. New XML export
allows for faster and easier integration with your industry-specific business
processes, without custom coding. The XSLT transformations are embedded
into the report file and will be triggered by the report viewers when exporting
to XML. XML exports can now be invoked from within the report viewers.
This feature provides a powerful, flexible hook for transforming Crystal
Reports data and integrating it into other applications.

Advanced report publishing

Also known as report bursting, this new advanced-publishing feature is a
platform for the mass distribution of personalized content. Multiple reports
can be created based on different data sources, combined into one desired
file format (for example, PDF), loaded with personalized content, and then
sent to a dynamic list of recipients—all in one action. The content can be
archived, printed, or emailed in separate actions, or simultaneously. This
feature makes scheduling much faster and easier, and provides the ability
to conduct cost effective one-on-one marketing campaigns and other
personalized high-volume reporting.

Note: This feature is available only with a BusinessObjects Enterprise XI
3.0 server environment.

Flexible application integration

Integrated salesforce.com driver

Now you can build reports that refresh against live salesforce.com data. The
included salesforce.com driver is optimized for reporting off salesforce.com
to easily access complete customer data and turn it into actionable business
information. Reports that use the salesforce.com driver can refresh their data
also when deployed to crystalreports.com.

Enhanced Web Services data driver

Integration with various web services can be difficult and complex due to a
wide variety of implementation types. The new data driver offers additional
web access to Web Services by providing support for RPC encoding of SOAP
messages, SSL-secured Web Servers, as well as working compatibility with
the WS-Security standard. It adapts to custom logon requirements such as
email address or user/password.

.NET report-modification SDK now included

The Report Application Server SDK is now available to users of the CR.NET
API without running a RAS server. Report modification such as
changing/adding/removing database providers, adding/removing/creating
report objects, parameters, formulas, and sections can be achieved by
accessing the RAS SDK through the CR .NET SDK.

What's different

In an effort to improve the Crystal Reports design experience, certain

components of Crystal Reports 2008 have been changed. This section
outlines some of the important changes.

Query as a Web Service

Report samples and sample database

To reduce download time, report samples and the Xtreme sample database
are now accessed through separate downloads on the Start Page of Crystal
Reports 2008.

.NET Developer SDK documentation, Merge Modules, and MSI files

.NET Developer documentation, merge modules, and MSI files are now
accessed through separate downloads on the Start Page of Crystal Reports
2008.

Report Developer Component (RDC)

The RDC is unsupported in Crystal Reports 2008. Developers wishing to
use Crystal Reports in a COM application should use Crystal Reports XI
Release 2. The ActiveX viewer remains a fully supported component of
Crystal Reports 2008.

Advanced DHTML viewers

The Advanced DHTML viewers have been removed from Crystal Reports
2008 because the improvements to the DHTML viewers make these additional
viewers unnecessary.

Java Reporting Component (JRC) availability and Java SDK documentation

Java developers now receive the JRC and Java SDK documentation through
the free Crystal Reports for Eclipse download. This product will be updated
on a separate schedule from Crystal Reports. Visit the start page in Crystal
Reports 2008 for more information on updates to Crystal Reports for Eclipse.

Query as a Web Service

Business Intelligence (BI) content is usually bound to a specific user interface
of BI tools. Query as a Web Service changes lets BI content be delivered as
a query to any user interface that can process Web Services. This release
provides updates and new features to enable greater functionality when
designing and viewing the query.

34 What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0

New features in existing products
Query as a Web Service 6
Sort query results
Control the order of the fetched rows by setting the sort order when you
design your query.

Enable ranking
Define a rank when you design a query. You can rank a group rows in a
subset based on a measure value, and fetch rows that belong to the highest
or lowest valued subsets (depending on how you define the ranking).

Note: Ranking is only available on universes created off databases that

support ranking. These are: Oracle, DB2, Teradata or Redbrick. For all others,
the Ranking button on the Query Panel is de-activated (grayed-out).

Consume index-aware prompts

Value indexes, in enumerated lists of values, are now published with the
Query as a Web Service and can be consumed.

Use delegated search

Delegated search improves query response time and is transparent for the
user. Rather than filtering a list of values locally, a restricted list of values is
sent directly to the database. It delegates the search function to the database
via an SQL statement.

Delegate search is also supported when you design a Query as a Web

Service and define prompts.

Set optional prompts

Optional prompts are set by the Universe Designer or during the Query as
a Webservice design. The user has the option to enter a value in the prompt
or not before running the Query.

The value that is entered serves as a query filter. If no value is submitted in

the optional prompt, the query is not filtered (the corresponding SQL
statement is updated to ignore this filter).

The corresponding Query as a Web Service WSDL definition file records

this optional prompt information, so this behavior is supported for Web Service
consumption.

multiple output formats.

Universe Designer
Here are the enhancements provided for BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.0:

What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0 39

6 New features in existing products
Universe Designer

Multilingual Universes
Thanks to the Universal Translation Manager, you can now create universes
for multilingual users. Designers create universes in their native language
and then once translations are available, users in other countries or locales,
may view the same universe in their preferred viewing language. Translations
of the universe metadata are stored within the universe file and made
available for reporting in Web Intelligence.

For more information and to get started using the Universal Translation
Manager with universes, see the Universal Translation Manager online help
and Universal Translation Manager User's Guide.

Note: This mulit-lingual enhancement applies only to the universe metadata

and not to the data itself. Depending on the way your database is setup, you
may not have the ability to match the metadata language with the data
language.

Stored procedure universe

A stored procedure is a procedure stored on the database server. Usually
written in SQL, the stored procedure benefits from the power and proximity
of the database from which it is managed. Stored procedures save processor
time by allowing the loading of database calls into the database server itself.
In Designer, you can create a universe based on one or more existing stored
procedures. In the new universe wizard, you can select the stored procedure
that you want to use and you enter data for any input parameters that the
procedure requires. Stored procedure universes are used with Web
Intelligence. When you run the Web Intelligence report, the report displays
data returned by the stored procedure.

Nested derived table

A nested derived table is a derived table based on an existing derived table.
You create a nested derived table by selecting a derived table that already
exists in the universe.
For more information about these two features, refer to Chapter 3, Creating
a Schema with tables and joins in the Designer's Guide.

Universe Connection Manager

The Universe Connection Manager is a new wizard that simplifies the way
you manage the connections between your Business Objects universes and

40 What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0

New features in existing products
Universe Builder 6
data sources. Use the Universe Connection Manager to create new
connections, and to modify your existing connections. You can also use the
Universe Connection Manager to check the integrity of available universes.
For example, you can use the Universe Connection Manager to check the
structure and joins of a universe to verify that it returns the data that you
expect.

Light Mode Designer

Light Mode Designer allows the administration and deployment of universes
without requiring a repository. Light mode is simplier than enterprise mode.

Metadata Exchange supports DB2 Cube Views 8.2

Designer now supports the creation and update of universes from DB2 Cube
Views version 8.2 . You can also export a universe to DB2 Cube Views
version 8.2 format. DB2 Cube Views 8.2 is listed in the create, update, and
export lists available in the Metadata Exchange wizard.

Universe Builder
DB2 Cube Views 8.2 support
Universe Builder now supports the creation and update of universes from
DB2 Cube Views version 8.2 .

You can also export a universe to DB2 Cube Views version 8.2 format.

DB2 Cube Views 8.2 is listed in the create, update, and export lists available
in the Metadata Exchange wizard.

For information on creating universes from metadata sources, see the

Universe Builder Guide.

Support for OLAP universes

Universe Designer supports OLAP data sources and provides expanded
functionality detailed below.

What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0 41

6 New features in existing products
Support for OLAP universes

OLAP universe automated update

In Universe Designer, the new OLAP universe update wizard allows you to
update universes automatically with changes made in the OLAP data source.
The wizard compares the universe with the updated data source and detects
new, modified, and deleted objects. The wizard gives you the option to
preserve objects you have added or modified manually after generating the
universe. You can also direct the wizard to delete obsolete objects from the
updated universe, or hide them in a separate class.

OLAP universe customization

After creating an OLAP universe, you customize the universe by inserting
and modifying dimensions, measures, details, pre-defined conditions, and
calculated measures. You can use the Designer functions @Prompt, @Select
and @Variable in object and measure definition.

Check Integrity
The Check Integrity option validates the definition of dimensions, measures,
details, and pre-defined conditions in the OLAP universe. The option checks
both generated objects and objects added manually. Check Integrity parses
XML and MDX syntax, and validates objects referenced in the functions
@Prompt, @Select, @Variable, and @Where.

Support for MSAS 2005

You can create connections to Microsoft Analysis Services 2005 to generate
OLAP universes. These connections support Single Sign-On.

Improved support for SAP BW universes

In this release, OLAP universes additionally support these SAP BW features:
• Mandatory and optional variables through the support of optional prompts.
• Default values for variables.
• Units and currency for key figures.
• SAP BW metadata organization.
• Key date variables
• Date data format

42 What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0

New features in existing products
Support for OLAP universes 6
For an overview of all the new features and benefits provided by
BusinessObjects XI 3.0 for SAP solutions, see What's New in
BusinessObjects XI 3.0 for SAP Solutions.

Improvements in Web Intelligence for OLAP universes

These enhancements in Web Intelligence improve the querying of OLAP
universes:
• Ability to search on multiple columns in a List of Values.
• Abitlity to delegate a search to the database to limit the values loaded
into the List of Values.
• Optional loading of the List of Values for optional prompts.
• Key dates to allow time-dependent querying.
• Smart measures to delegate the calculation of measures to the database.

Calculated measures
You can create calculated measures in OLAP universes based on SAP BW
and MSAS data sources. Calculated measures in OLAP universes restrict
queries in the same way definitions on the measure object do in non-OLAP
universes. For calculated measures, you define the restriction using MDX
functions embedded in XML tags rather than using SQL.

Pre-defined conditions
You can create pre-defined conditions in all OLAP universes. They are similar
to pre-defined conditions in non-OLAP universes except that you define the
WHERE clause using XML tags rather than SQL.

Optional prompts
In OLAP universes, you can define a prompt as optional. SAP BW optional
variables are generated in the universe as filters with optional prompts.

Default values for prompts

Default values can be defined for optional and mandatory prompts in any
type of universe.

What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0 43

6 New features in existing products
Data Access

Index Awareness
All OLAP universe objects are generated with Index Awareness. If there are
duplicate values in a hierarchy for an object, Index Awareness eliminates
inconsistency in the List of Values. For example, say that Paris occurs twice
in the hierarchy, once under the parent France and once under the parent
Texas. If the user selects Paris under France, only rows for Paris, France
are returned.

Mandatory filters
Mandatory filters are hidden in the universe. They are triggered when a user
selects the associated object in the Query Panel in Web Intelligence.
Examples of the use of a mandatory filter are:
• Verify the Login entered by a user with a Login stored in a table.
• Limit the use of a universe to the hours between 9 am and 6 pm.
• Limit the query to sales information for a particular period entered by the
user.
All SAP BW variables are generated as mandatory filters in the universe.

For more information on these enhancements to OLAP universe support,

refer to Chapter 6: Working with OLAP universes of the Designer's Guide.

Data Access
The Data Access component provides new functionality detailed below.

Data access through the JDBC layer

Data access connections are available through the JDBC layer. In order to
use JDBC connections, you need to obtain the .jar file or files, from the
database vendor, and install them on the machine running the Business
Objects application.

To get started with using a JDBC data access driver:

• Refer to the vendor’s documentation for information on installing and
configuring the data access .jar files.
• Refer to Chapter 2, Creating a connection in the Data Access Guide for
information on how to configure the Business Objects application’s .sbo
files so that you can create JDBC data access connections.

44 What's New in BusinessObjects XI 3.0

New features in existing products
BusinessObjects XI Integration for SAP Solutions 6
Open driver connectivity
The Data Access component includes a Driver Development Kit (DDK). Use
the DDK to develop in Java, custom data access drivers for data sources
where no drivers are available. You can then use these data sources with
your Business Objects applications.

To get started with developing a data access driver for a data source for
which there is no existing driver, refer to the Data Access Developer's Guide.

JavaBean data access drivers

You can create JavaBean data access drivers. A JavaBean data access
driver defines procedures that can retrieve data from any source. In your
Business Objects applications, these procedures are exposed as stored
procedures. That is, you can use a JavaBean driver to create a stored
procedure universe based on a JavaBean source.

To get started with developing a JavaBean driver, refer to the Data Access
Developer's Guide.

BusinessObjects XI Integration for SAP

Solutions
The BusinessObjects XI Integration for SAP Solutions offers improved
integration with SAP's Knowledge Management - Repository Framework
Interface so that not only all popular Business Objects workflows are enabled
in SAP Portal, but also key capabilities of SAP Portal can transparently apply
to objects in the BusinessObjects Enterprise repository. You can now, for
example, seamlessly log on to BusinessObjects InfoView or browse
BusinessObjects Enterprise.
