Project: Pacific Beach Digital Community Center

Purpose: Programming site from site context
Date: Sept. 2007
Digital Media: Archicad, Photoshop, Illustrator
DiCom Center Site

Currently Zoning is an obstacle no property owner can get away from

especially in Pacific Beach, California. The site in this project is
accessible by all public and private modes of transportation, and
located at one of the busiest intersections in San Diego. West to
East it starts with the Crystal Pier which takes pedestrians and
automobiles 100 yards out over the Pacific Ocean, then opening up
to the commercial and bar district up Garnet Ave. from the
boardwalk. North to South Mission Blvd is a main thoroughfare
which parallels the coastline.

A central graffiti wall was the focus of the original design

Connection to Mission Blvd makes this site and the rest of the lots
on this side of the road differ in their zone from the buildings out
their back door. CV-1-2 and CV-4-1 are commercial visitor zones
and intended for areas located near employment centers and areas
with recreation resources or other visitor attractions. RM-2-5, multi
residential weaves its way around this area as well.

Systems
This project was my first introduction
into green building materials and
systems. Cost was not a concern
during the progression of this
assignment so I decided on making
most of the green elements of this
building structural. The southern
facing slope of the roof is made out of
Solar Glass, this retains the energy
that the constant clear weather of
southern California brings. Throughout
the project recycled shipping
containers are used in many different
aspects.

Containers
First a series of staggered stacked containers create a two story activity space and then
again containers are used as a transforming coffee shop that is placed outside of the
building in the pedestrian traffic of Garnet to showcase the container uses.

Project: Habitat For Humanity Community

Purpose: Affordable Housing
Date: Feb. 2007
Digital Media: Archicad, Photoshop, Illustrator

Inspired by the organization Habitat for Hummanity this project was meant to deal with affordable housing. The projects first concern
was the site. To truly be affordable we could not set the site on a piece of premium land, so we chose an odd shaped left over piece
of land in Oceanside, California. Using pre constructed modules and SIPS I designed a community that could be built for little cost to
accomodatge low income families.
Habitat Community siteplan
In Oceanside the median price for a home is Number of units: 20
$516,000. This has more than trippled since Number of occupants: 48
1998. The average income for a family is Avg. number of occupants per unit: 2.4
$32,000. And nationally 12 million people Avg. size of units: 1300 SF
spend more than 50% of their wages on Number of parking spaces: 36
% of lot coverage: 72%
shelter.
That means if in a household only one person
is working it is impossible to make ends meet.
And if two parents are working then who is
taking care of the children?

Triplex

Each unit is oriented to

the North West so it may
take advantage of what
little views there are

There are a number of reasons why this site

is considered left over. The main is the Single Units
shape, long and narrow with little views in or
out of it. The view to the east is blocked by a
cement block wall which stands one story
high. To the west is a trailer park which is
separated by a chained link fence. The entry
located on the south end of the site is only
accessible by driving through a community
center parking lot. Parking

SIPS Units
There are several aspects of my plan that make this project affordable. By using the SIPS
FIBERBOND construction on the first floor, costs are cut down by a third. The customized panels also

eliminate job site theft. This product combines five material and labor steps. The framing
STRAND
BOARD POLYSTYRENE SHEETROCK crew is more productive and the work can be done by volunteers rather than skilled
professionals. The savings are sustainable because of the better
insulation, it will continue to save the home owner money for years to come. As reported by
Consumer Reports, December 22nd, 1977, the energy "off-sets" will allow the homeowner to
STANDARD ROOF make a 13th principal payment each year, with this a thirty year mortgage will be able to be
paid in 20 year period.
In addition to the savings from the lower floor, I plan on having the top floors built off site.
These will be built out of FCS cedar for the framing and siding. This way both stages of
construction can be done at the same time. As soon as some first floor units are complete
ORIENTED STRAND then the top units can be brought in and placed by crane.

Canopy & Bike Rack fe studio/studio 5A

Project: Structural Canopy / Architectural Bike Rack

Purpose: Design Build Studio
Date: Dec. 2009
Digital Media: Rhino, AutoCad, Photoshop, Illustrator

This project was a combination of two semesters work. The original project was an artistic bike rack which was built from ten pieces of 10ft long
steel tubing. It is installed on Woodbury University’s Barrio Logan Campus, just south of Downtown San Diego. There is a trolley stop and bus stop located
a mile away, so students and faculty ride bicycles from those locations. Before the bike rack there was no place to lock up the bikes so people
had them laying around the interior of the school. The campus had an open space in the back of the school where the wood-shop was located. The
problem was that this was the southern facade so it was always very hot and sunny. These conditions led to the perfect placement of both projects.

Member Matrix Stencils Shifting Matrix

Shifting Matrix Compilations

Taking ten pieces of steel tubing, my class and I bent each member with the rule that no two members were
to look similar. This was to prevent similar movements when compiled together. Once all members were
bent we created a matrix to see the possible connection outcomes. We then made cardboard stencils of
each piece and assigned each student a color. With our stencils and our colored spray paint in hand we
painted a connection collage on the wall till we had each stenciled each piece on the wall.

Variety Attempt
Single Unit Attempt 2 Our main focus for the design of the canopy was to waste zereo amount of
aluminum from our 4’ x 8’ sheets, due to our small budget. After numerous attempts with
sizes and shapes of cuts and cutouts we decided on the single unit layout below. Each
cutout was taken to a break and bent along its x-axis in different ways. Each bent cutout
was then rivited to the top of the canopy frame giving texture to the panels and creating
dynamic lighting situations.

Using conventional methods to keep up with the needs of an ever expanding population would take up more land than we have to offer and
devastate the water resources that we are dependent on. Using a Vertical Farming (V.F.) method instead is a way to relive the stress on our
land and other natural resources. You can farm four vertical acres to every one acre of conventional methods. The city of Chihuahua is
having difficulty deciding how to deal with the city edge. If these V.F.’s are implemented then the current agricultural fields will slow down in
growth helping with the sprawling effect. Also Chihuahua is a very horizontal city, and if they can get used to the idea of farming vertically then
the jump to living vertically will follow naturally

Nestling at the foot of the Himalayas, Nepal is among the world's Kathmandu Valley
poorest and least-developed countries with almost one-third of its

Nearly half of the population - 44% - are children, and in Nepalese

Kathmandu, Nepal sitedesign
It is not by accident that this site is in the center of the city, but it is
still undeveloped. There is a story told by the Nepalize that on this
site thousands of years ago, their ancestors had slain an ancient
demon on this very ground and upon their victory they trampled the
beast with their horses into the earth burying him underneath the soil.
So every year there is an annual running of the horses to honor this
memory. When looking at a picture of the site you can see the
marks left from the horses.
I used these lines to guide my design.

Introduction

In addition to my academic requirements I was also required to obtain internship hours in order
to obtain skills that academia could not provide. I obtained my hours working for a local design
firm located in Little Italy.
Custom contemporary interior design was the main focus of the firm. We were also developing
an affordable upscale modular home system framed with recycled shipping containers.

As the project progressed the clientele expanded, the affordability of the containers attracted
other uses such as a winery in Baja, Mexico.
