SONIC LOGGING TEST
for

CITYLOFTS PROJECT

VOL 3

A. INTRODUCTION

To check the concrete integrity of bored piles at their on going CITYLOFTS project, PT.
Duta Anggada Realty, has called for Sonic Logging Test. This report present the result of
19 piles tested on August 12 and 13, 2005.

Up to this report 70 piles had been tested.

B. THE SONIC LOGGING TECHNIQUE

The Sonic Logging technique is used to detect defects in concrete structures such as cast
in-situ piles, caissons, barrettes and diaphragm walls.

Such tests can produce an economic survey of the homogeneity of each structure to
complement the more expensive load capacity testing (pile loading test).

During the construction of caissons, bored and other cast-in-situ concrete piles, the
following defects may be encountered:

• Honeycombing and/or Segregation due to improper concrete placement methods

• Washout of cement due to ground water flow
• Cracks in the pile shaft due to shrinkage
• Inclusion of soil causing contamination of concrete
• Necking and arching of the pile due to collapse of side walls during withdrawal of
temporary support / casing.

To perform the cross hole sonic logging, a number of steel tubes are installed during
construction of the foundation to allow the lowering of transmitter and receiver probes.
Ultrasonic waves passed through the structures are delayed and absorbed depending on
the physical properties of the structure. The signal is displayed for interpretation.

Notes:
On Agust 18, 2005 meeting attended by DAR (Joko and Hutapea), GTL (Gouw), Arkonin (Juswadji, Zakky), Bauer (Tatok, Jatnoko,
Fajar). Bauer has agreed to core pile no 135 and 137. Prior to coring PIT will be performed. Based on the result further action on the
suspected defected piles will be decided.

Table 2 above, shows some of the piles that need immediate attention. The test results
shows significant signal delay or signal lost. This indicating a certain defect or necking in
the piles.

A meeting has been conducted on August 18, 2005. The meeting was attended by:

• The Owner (PT Duta Anggada – Mr. Joko and Mr. Hutapea)
• The Geotechnical Consultant (Gouw Tjie Liong)
• The Supervisor (PT Arkonin – Mr. Juswadji, Mr. Zakky)
• The Piling Contractor (PT Bauer Pratama Indonesia – Mr. Tatok, Mr. Jatnoko, Mr.
Fajar)

During the meeting the suspected defective piles were discussed. It was presented that
pile no 51 and pile no 228 has been excavated, it was found out that indeed the piles has
some defects. The defective portion was totally hacked off and re-casted (see Table 3).

It was also decided that pile no 135 and 137 shall be immediately cored to the bottom to
verify the pile integrity. Prior to that the pile, PT Bauer Pratama shall also perform PIT test
on the piles. Further decision shall be taken when the PIT and coring results are available.
