LINE ARRAY TECH TALK

Wave-shape-transformer™
The unique and patented High Frequency
Wave-shape-transformer™ is the vital backbone of all
SOUND PROJECTS full-range line array models. This unique,
proprietary acoustic wave-guide technology transforms the
spherical uni-phase wavefront generated by the HF
compression driver to a near perfect cylindrical wavefront
emerging from the front of the array. Smooth edged
horizontal and, even more important, tight vertical dispersion
generate the necessary virtual “slice of audio” that easily
stacks on top of each other.
The low compression high frequency drivers have small
diaphragms in comparison to their pass-band, similar to low
and mid frequency drivers. This feature, augmented by the
appropriate acoustic loading of the wave-shape-transformer™
is responsible for a spectacular impulse response.

Symmetrical design, a vital advantage

In every design of a line array, driver placement is crucial. It
will have a decisive influence in a difficult, reverberant
acoustical environment such as multi purpose halls.
Horizontal dispersion largely depends on the geometry and
number of sources working at crossover frequencies. Using
two horizontally placed sources, one HF and one MF, will
produce erratic dips in the off axis frequency response (fig.1).
These unpleasant artefacts are inevitable results of the
cross-over phase shift and driver path-length differences.
However, adding a second MF source and placing the HF
source in the middle, creates a more stable and symmetrical
horizontal dispersion (fig.2). However it is imperative that the
distance between the sources is sufficiently small.

Simple and pragmatic software SPArC™

SOUND PROJECTS Line Array Calculator (SPArC™) is a
powerful, yet uncomplicated, acoustical prediction tool for
Sigma-series users. It shows which angles and processor
settings to use for best results.
The Excel based mathematical software consists of a
user-friendly interface enabling fast and reliable on-site
simulation of acoustic and mechanic values. After entering a
few relevant local parameters, the automatically calculated
‘advice‘ can easily be altered manually, immediately showing
results or consequences.

SIGMA SERIES
Linex™
symmetrical vertical line array module

A vertical line array module with exceptional qualities. In any

situation where one box just is not loud enough or can‘t deliver
the desired coverage, Linex™ will most likely offer a spectacular
solution.

Construction and handling

Linex™ is an ultra compact module constructed of proprietary
carbon fibre composite with an unmatched stiffness to weight
ratio. One Linex™ enclosure weights only 40Kg. The rigidity of
the complex cabinet shape is furthermore enhanced by multiple,
arrhythmic reinforcement ribs and bracings. Self explanatory,
aluminium alloy, rigging hardware allows safe and easy assembly
of rigs up to 24 units per hang. Enclosure angles up to 6 degrees
are possible without wave-front break-ups.

Acoustic properties
Musicality, smooth HF radiation, breath taking impulse behaviour
and immaculate acoustic coupling are decisive Linex™
ingredients. An important feature is the impressive low-end
performance of a Linex™ rig. Subs can remain ground stacked
without loosing musical coherence; all musical information comes
from the fly. Whenever called upon, a Linex™ rig will deliver
sound pressure levels second to none... This is vital for
reproducing all the emotions and dynamics of a live performance.

Components
Two custom designed 6.5-inch MF drivers are mounted behind
narrow, rectangular diffraction slots acting as two “line sources”
flanking the patented HF Wave-shape-transformer™. Minimized
horizontal dimensions and an appropriate time offset guarantee a
smooth transition between the three exits at cross-over frequencies
and therefore a constant horizontal coverage angle. To emulate a
single, symmetrical low frequency source, two 12” woofers are
mounted ”side firing” in the enclosure, which has a 62 Hz bass
reflex tuning. This configuration endows Linex™ with an
impressive low-end response that often makes subwoofers
obsolete.

Not self-powered!
Linex™ will almost exclusively be used as multiple-enclosure rigs.
Consequentially most, if not all, arguments for built-in
amplification are invalid. In fact the "power-packing-density" of
loudspeaker-chassis already generates a lot of heat. Thus adding
even minimal heat-generating power-amplifiers would be
prohibitive. Therefore, unlike all other SOUND PROJECTS
systems, Linex™ has not been made self-powered.

Four Five
DreamLine Series
self-powered line array solution

Is there a reason why a sound system should not look elegant? Wouldn‘t it be great
if there was a system with all the advantages of a line-array combined with the
reliable simplicity of a standard plug-and-play, self-powered loudspeaker?

A SOUND PROJECTS DreamLine™ is precisely that. Not just another box, nor just
another line array system. Instead, all the advantages of a perfect line source are
embedded in each DreamLine™, augmented by our proven DALC controller
circuits and MICRO-AMP's.
All the complexities of alignment, controller presets, amp racks, rigging hardware
and heavy cabinets are omitted. Cabling is greatly reduced: one AC power line
and one audio line. Typical setup time can be around 5 minutes for one system, a
fraction of a comparable ‘conventional‘ line-array system, based on multiple,
single cabinets.

DreamLine™
THE one box line array
Twelve Wave-shape-transformers™ are flanked by two 6,5 inch low mid drivers
and loaded by constant directivity waveguide to create a powerful, fullrange
system. Angle settings of all 12 individual line-source units are optimised for a
stable listening image all over the audience. Amplifier power is supplied by
multiple MICRO-AMP™ modules and “protected” by a DALC speaker
management system with a fixed, system dependent pre-set.
Easy flying, installing and transport of the system without extensive technical
knowledge. Any chances on installation errors have virtually been omitted. A
weight of only 120 kg, enables the DreamLine™ to be flown from most theatre
fly-bars.

Tailor-made
For fixed installation each DreamLine™ can be configured individually. Based on
the venues parameters such as seat plan, auditorium shape and required loudness,
the 12 wave-shape-transformers™, can be adjusted up to increments of 1/10th of a
degree to match a specific venue. Even the maximum obtainable SPL can largely
be adapted to customer‘s needs. All of this within one aesthetic housing in a
customer specified colour. The correct rigging point is marked and flying height is
indicated on the box.

DL15 and DL30

Two models, the DreamLine™15 (DL15) and DreamLine™30 (DL30) give the user
more freedom in use and vertical angle selection. Both DL15 and DL30 hold 6
line-array units. Simple, recessed flying hardware allows the DL15 and DL30
cabinets to be used as a ‘conventional‘ top or combine as a line-array of
substantial length. Developed for fixed installation, touring and easy storage the
DL15 and DL30 are utterly convenient and self-explanatory in setup.

The DL15 and DL30 are the split version of the DreamLine™ adding versatility to
the DreamLine concept with pragmatic rigging hardware (one setting only!), ease
of transport and expandability to up to 4 systems in rugged cabinets with truck
pack transport sizes. Combining the DL15 and DL30 results in line array
configurations varying from 15 up to 120 degrees vertical dispersion angle.
