McCormick Community Internship Application: U-Visa Immigration

Law
Applications for Summer 2011
Due Date: May 11, 2011

The McCormick Foundation has generously established an endowment at

DePaul’s Steans Center in order to provide funding for internships in
community-based organizations that allow DePaul undergraduates to apply
their knowledge and skills to benefit an organization while simultaneously
providing the student with valuable work experience. This internship is
reserved for our best and brightest DePaul undergraduates who have
exhibited a commitment to community action, service, and academic
excellence from all disciplines and departments at DePaul and an interest in
immigration law.

Successful applicants will have developed a interest in immigration and

immigration law and utilize their individual talents, experiences and
academic expertise. Interns receive a $1,200 stipend for a 100 hour
internship, participate in training, reflection and are required to present on
their internship experience and project at the Service Speaks Conference to
be held on Friday, May 13, 2011. The presentations will highlight the work
they did at the law clinic with a clear demonstration of an achieved goal.

In order to participate in the Project, undergraduate students must

be willing to participate in a 100-hour internship over the course of
the summer (an estimated 10 to 12 hours per week) in order to
assist undocumented immigrant victims of crimes under the
supervision, training and support of law faculty and a law school
student. Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to sit in
on client interviews, draft initial client interview summaries and
affidavits and assist the law student in development of facts and in
gathering evidence. The law student will provide the undergraduate
student with feedback on his/her work.
