Rehearsals for All Choirs Resume in September
Chris Martin, Director of Music

As summer comes to an end and families get into their back-to-school

routine, ask yourself about the possibility of joining one of the choirs
that make up the music ministry of Grace Covenant Presbyterian
Church.

Why sing in the choir?

Throughout the history of Christianity, music has always played a vital

role in worship and in personal growth. The beauty of a melody adds
meaning to an inspirational text and the singing on that text helps us to
come to a better understanding of what we believe. Choir members are
active leaders is worship, praising God through their music and learning, at every age, how to
become more actively involved in their faith.

We invite everyone to join a choir–regardless of previous experience. Our music ministry has
room for new members and will welcome you with open arms.

Grace Covenant’s Music Ministry

Congregational Nominating Committee

The Congregational Nominating Committee has been busy this summer,

working toward a slate of nominations for Elders and Deacons for the Class
of 2013. We thank the congregation for submitting the blue and yellow rec-
ommendation forms in July as they are excellent input. The slate of nominations will be presented to the
congregation in October. The Committee members request your prayers for discernment of God’s will for
the leaders of the church in the Class of 2013. Thank you. Congregational Nominating Committee

July’s contributions of $34,100 were up 6% over June’s level and
were about equal to those of last July. However, contributions for
the first seven months of the year are running 11% behind last year
while total income is down 9% for the same period. Both compari-
sons are slight improvements over comparisons in recent prior
months. July’s expenses totaled $53, 500, down significantly from
June’s total which included $16,000 in property taxes on the Stuart
Circle Building. Included in July’s expenses were a payment for a
financial review, currently underway, and a substantial portion of
our annual insurance coverage. Offsetting these expenses were a
contributions to fund first floor renovations, also underway, and a $5,700 payment form the
Building Fund to reimburse major air conditioning repairs. For the year-to-date expenses have
exceeded income by $110,000, compared with $87,200 at this time last year.

It’s easy to give

Next time you go to the grocery store pick up a couple extra canned
goods. Food donations are needed for the William Byrd Community
House. A few suggestions are canned fruit, tuna, boxes of macaroni
and cheese, boxes of pasta, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, jelly, cereal,
and other non-perishable food items. Donations may be left in the bas-
ket in the Glass Office (near the back doors, on the main floor of the
Education Building). Please consider giving and being a blessing!

PRESBYTERIAN OLDER ADULT MINISTRY
Rev. Mr. Charles E. Sutton September
One of the disturbing aspects of our present culture
is the lack of commitment. Older adults matured in Birthdays
an era when commitment was pressed upon us, fos-
tered, expected, and demanded. Today young adults, 1- Lisa Gray
college age and beyond, are far less willing to commit 1- Dana McKnight
to anything. This can be of real concern to us. We 2- William Alexander
observe grandchildren keeping or holding a job, or 2- Harry Foster
work, for less than a year. We see them fail in their 3- Jack Pritchardt
marriage, or chose divorce when difficulty arises. We 3- Wade Kennedy
hear them say, ―I don’t want to join a church. I want to 3- Molly Frost
choose the doctrines I think are best and true for me. I 5- Salley Lowe

―non-denominational church.‖ Even though that 8- Virginia Nelson
choice demands a certain amount of commitment. 9- Stella Schlieser
As older adults we observe in our present culture a seri- 10- Michael Roberts

doesn’t affect me, then I am not interested.‖ is a typical 13- Gloria Gregory
response. To be a Christian requires commitment. 16- Farrar Pace
There is no way around it. We commit our life to Jesus 16- Caitlin Corby
Christ as our Lord and Savior, and endeavor to serve 17- Joseph Hazlegrove
Him. Without commitment we lose the meaning of 18- Bill Kerns
life, which is to love and serve God and love and serve 18- Patricia Clarke
our neighbors. Without commitment our lives will lack 18- Sarah Nelson
meaning and purpose. Without commitment our cul- 19- Frances Mack
