“Honey, I shrunk the ???”
“Honey, I shrunk the dog”!! Four or five months ago, I reported
that The Jet was a burly 105 pounds. Truly a Jumbo Jet or at least
a close facsimile. Consultation with the vet people suggested
that The Jet was overly Jumbo and should be shrunk and
downsized. After months of kibble reduction and more exercise
he recently checked in with a weight loss of 10 pounds. From
Jumbo he has gone now to being the Big Jet. Following further
consultation with the vet folks, it became evident that they want
to see a Fighter Jet, and so the kibble reduction and exercise will
continue for probably another 10 to 15 pounds!!! The strange
thing is . . . the Jet doesn’t act any hungrier now than he ever did.
Which means, he still lets you know whenever he thinks that
kibble time is close by getting very bouncy!!
“Honey, I shrunk the Wife”!! Yes siree, The Jet is not the only
one on reduced kibble and increased exercise. The missus has
been losing a few pounds herself!! Unlike The Jet, however, she
hasn’t been anywhere near as friendly come meal time. I get
particularly concerned though, when I find her sniffing around
The Jet’s food dish. If it ever came to a kibble fight, I am afraid of
what damage might happen to my Boy!!
“Honey, I shrunk the Mikie”!! Yup . . . me too. Right along with
The Jet, I have dropped about 10 pounds also!! It just didn’t seem
fair that he was targeted for kibble reduction all by himself. True
leadership is all about NOT expecting others to suffer while we
continue to stuff ourselves at the kibble dish. True leadership is
not concerned about getting rid of other’s fat, while ignoring
our own!!
“Honey, I am going to shrink the trees”!! I have been studying up
on modern woodlot management and one of the key findings, is
that trees need to be thinned out just like carrots. Trees that are
growing too close together tend to be more deformed, weaker
and more subject to disease. By spacing trees properly the
overall health of the forest can be improved and overall wood
growth per acre or hectare can be improved significantly. This
means that healthy forests are removing more carbon from the
atmosphere. Which is a good thing!! Perhaps, more on this topic
in a followup “Ravings”.
So during the next few months I am going to be very busy, but
the most important project will be to keep The Jet leaner and
faster than the missus, so that he can consistently win the race
to the kibble dish!! 800

Cake cutting for READ Saint John

2011 marks the 35th anniversary of READ Saint
John! Since 1976 READ Saint John has been
providing free one-to-one tutoring to adults in
the greater Saint John area. Adults who want to
improve their reading, writing and numeracy
can come to READ. Our goal is to build self-
confidence by guiding adult learners in our
Each One – Teach One program. Our tutors work 1-3 hours a
week with their students, helping them define and reach their
goals. Eventhough we are a volunteer organization, all of our
tutors have been trained to teach adult learners.
On Friday, April 15th we will celebrate our 35th anniversary
with a series of events. At 11:00am the READ Saint John flag
is going to be raised on the Market Slip. The mayor will read
a proclamation declaring April 15th READ Saint John day. The
festivities continue at 12.00pm, because at this time we will be
cutting the cake on the second level of Market Square. We have
found a fitting location near the library. Everyone is invited to
join us!
Finally, in the evening we will begin a tutor training workshop
for our new tutors. There are still some openings for this
workshop. If you would like to become a volunteer tutor with
READ Saint John and give someone the gift of reading, give us a
call at 633-2011 or send an email to readsj@nbnet.nb.ca.

Purple stole vigil

The Catholic Network for Women’s Equality mission statement
calls us to enable women to name their giftedness and from that
awareness to effect structural change in the church that reflects
the mutuality and co responsibility of women and men within

We wear purple, the color of reconciliation, to stress the need
for change of heart on the part of the institutional church to its
oppressed women. We wear a stole as a symbol of our dignity
as baptized Christians called to ministry. We walk in protest, in
silence, in prayer, confident that Christ walks with each and all
of us; clergy and faithful women and men. We pray that in Him
we may begin to walk together in the way of justice.

4th Annual Street Hockey
Championships
Registration is now open for the 4th annual Tim Hortons World
3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship. The annual tournament
is scheduled to take place over the weekend of April 29th, 30th
& May 1st at our permanent home, Long Wharf. This event is
about physical and mental wellness and raising funds for mental
health programs and services within New Brunswick.
Last year, the tournament introduced a youth division, which
will continue in 2011. Working with both the Saint John Boys
and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John, the
event attracted youth between the ages of seven and 18 to take
part in four categories: ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18.
New this year will be the opportunity for both men and women
to play together in the Recreational division. This is a terrific
chance for colleagues to face off and enjoy a great weekend of
fun and fitness.
Registration closes on Friday, April 15th.
The Tim Hortons World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship
is made possible continued support of major local sponsors.
Funds raised will go to MindCare New Brunswick.

The Greater Saint

Foundation has
recently located to

visible and more accessible space in Uptown Saint John at 76
Princess Street in the Trinity Dental Clinic Building. The Greater
Foundation, which supports registered charities within a 50 km.
radius of Greater Saint John, will receive applications for 2011
grants until 5:00pm, April 15th, 2011 at their new location.
The Foundation recently implemented changes in the process
whereby they receive, evaluate and process applications for
grants. A Grants Committee is in place, with board members
and additional community representation, which reviews
applications, based on what they consider to be the best practices
of colleague foundations across Canada and after reviewing
quality of life data in the Foundation’s annual Vital Signs Reports.
It makes recommendations to the Foundation Board. The
application form has been posted on the Foundation website,
www.saint-john-foundation.nb.ca and can be downloaded from
it.
The Anniversary Grant of up to $30,000 will also be awarded
this year to a charitable group seeking funding for a unique
initiative with significant community impact, which will address
a priority community need, as identified in the Foundation’s Vital
Signs Reports. This is in addition to over $200,000 anticipated in
grants to be distributed to local charitable causes in 2011.
The Foundation operates frugally, with about 1.5% of its assets
for administrative costs annually. For that reason, it hopes a
donor of a boardroom/meeting table and chairs may materialize
to help keep their operating costs to a minimum. It is grateful for
the large number of donors who contribute time, resources and
funding to continue to support the wide range of local charities

Kennebecasis valley quilting guild
The Members of the Kennebecasis Valley Quilting Guild have
been busy all winter making blocks to be made into quilts for
their current projects. Every month the members have been
taking home pieces of fabric to be sewn into blocks, which
will be made into lap robes and bed quilts. Some will become
small quilts which will be forwarded to Victoria’s Quilts to be
distributed by them to people who have recently been diagnosed
with cancer. These quilts bring comfort during chemotherapy.
This organization is locally headquartered in Moncton. More of
these blocks will become quilts on National Quilt Day when the
ladies spend the day making and finishing quilts which are to be
given to a local home for the elderly. Also small quilts are almost
ready for delivery to the neonatal department at the Regional
Hospital.
Several workshops have been held over the winter which
brought new skills and reviewed skills and happy fellowship was
enjoyed by all the participants.
In many homes quilters are busy making quilts for this year’s
Quilt Show and Sale which will be held September 15th, 16th
& 17th at the Island View Lions Club. Many of the quilts which
will be on display will come from further away as this is a great
venue to show and have quilts judged by experts. This year’ s
theme for the show is ‘Serendipity’ and the members have joined
into groups of four to make a quilt which visually explains this
theme! These should be quite ‘off the wall’. 835
