Wednesday 8th June 2011 (9:15 – 16:00) Acorn House – Conference Suite, Central Milton Keynes Eating Disorders: Eating disorders are an often miss-understood mental health issue affecting over 1.6 million people in Britain, with up to 20% of sufferers dying as a result of their illness. Developing speciality and an increase in evidence based treatments results in a challenge for professionals to remain up-to-date with progress in the field. This workshop aims to increase general understanding about eating disorders, the variety of treatment approaches available, highlight the benefits and challenges related to carers involvement and consider the personal perceptions of sufferers themselves in order to explore motivations and treatment considerations.
About the Presenter:
Emma Bacon is the Founder and Project Manager of BalancED MK – a Community Interest Company created to provide support to people directly and indirectly affected by eating disorders in the Milton Keynes area. The combination of Emma’s own personal experience of recovery from Anorexia, the experience of founding and running BalancED MK and the professional development she has partaken in over the years (including eating disorder related training courses) makes Emma the perfect speaker on the subject. Emma’s unique blend of first hand experience, specialist training, professional application and active caring for others has seen her appear on national television and radio as a key authority on the subject.
The Day’s Agenda: About the Course:
09.15 - Registration and Refreshments The course will enable you to: 09.30 - Welcome and Introduction to Eating Disorders · Understand the statistics, signs, symptoms & detail 11.00 - Refreshments related to a variety of different eating disorders; 11.15 - Current Treatment Approaches and Research · Be up to date on the recent developments across a 13.15 - Lunch variety of treatment approaches; 14:00 - Carers Involvement and Sufferer’s · Better understand the carers role; Perceptions/Motivations · Appreciate the sufferer’s perceptions & motivations 15.45 - Q & A in connection with maintenance of an eating 16:00 - Close disorder, highlighting considerations in treatment.
Who Should Attend:
Attendees are likely to be from all professional groups involved in the care and management of people affected by an eating disorder, including youth / community workers, counsellors, health professionals (inc. Doctors / nurses / mental health workers), teachers and school matrons / nurses. Also welcome are carers of sufferers such as friends and relatives who want a greater insight into the subject.
