For others it is the endless trail of fine powdered graphite and the ribbons of saw dust that seem to

lead from the sharpener to the trash every time.

Process:

If the task allows the mechanical pencil they will keep a sharp, crisp tip as easy as one, two,
three unless the pencil is out of lead. Reloading a mechanical pencil is a very easy process. The
first step is to make sure that the refills arc the correct size. Second remove the lid from the pencil
and add the lead. Third r.eplace the lid. The fourth step is to either click the button or twist the lid
until new lead appears at the writing tip. Now you are ready to write once again.

Definition:

Handling the refills or leads.might raise the concern oflead poisoning for some. This should not be
a concern because the lead refills are usually a mixture of graphite and smaller amounts of other
material. but not actual lead. The definition of lead poisoning is damage to the brain, nerves, red
blood cells, or digestive system because of ingestion of lead. Since there is no actual lead in the
refills lead poisoning is not an issue.

Persuasive:

There are other things to consider when you pick out your new pencil. Keep in mind that
traditional pencils are made of wood. To get the wood many trees will have to meet an untimely
death. After the trees are killed and the pencils are made they eventually get ground irito sawdust.
A person would not have to deal with the guilt of killing a tree if they choose a mechanical pencil.
Pencils

Illustrative:

Pencils come in many different styles and can be used for many different types of applications.
An artist might use a colored pencil to capture all the details of a picture, wcrc as an architcct might
prefer a mechanical pencil for its crisp clean lincs. Somc a spccifically dcsigncd for particular
applications. For cxample, a carpenters pencil is tough and bulky to hold up to a harsher environment.
This is great for a carpenter, but would not be ideal for a secretary. There is a pcncil that will fit any
task.

Classification:

Today there is a great variety of pencils. All ofthesc varictics can bc found in onc ofthrcc categories;
traditional pencil, a thin wooden cylinder permancntly bondcd around thc corc; mechanical pcncil, oftcn
rcsemble a writing pen having a ca~e of metal, plastic, or a combination of both; and thc propclling
pcncil, also made of plastic but lack the mechanics that make up a mechanical pencil. Although it may
seem that there are many more varieties every pencil fits into onc of these categories.

Comparison:

Thc traditional pencil and the mechanical pencil are both a great pencil; however, traditional pcncils
rcquirc some sort of sharpening device. Such devices are usually sharp, messy, and sometimes loud.
The mechanical pencil will always be sharp with a simplc click of a button or twist of thc lid as long as
there are refills in it Mcchanical pencils will cost a littlc bit extra, but thcy will outlast a traditional
pencil. If you kecp a traditional pencil freshly sharpened it will quickly be too short to work with.

Descriptive:

Traditional pencils can turn the calmest person into a snarling, red faced madman. It might be when
this person needs to quickly jot down something of great importance, but the can only find a tiny, eraser
less, no lead having, fragment of a traditional pencil. For some the problem is with the loud angry whir
that sharpeners make with every revolution the little crank slowly makcs.
