Introduction

This manual will allow you to load the Altera FLEX10K device with any of the
components included on the CD. You will then be able to connect the outputs of the
component to the pins of your choosing, and connect those pins to whatever display you
choose. There are certain pins that are already connected to a seven segment display, as
well as input pins which are connected to the octal DIP switch integrated into the board.
This manual will go through the step by step process of downloading onto the FPGA
board, then choosing the input/output pins for testing.

Requirements

Altera FLEX10K board

ByteBlaster MV cable
Tempest Project CD
Altera Max+Plus II software
Using the Altera FLEX10K Board

1) Connect the ByteBlaster MV cable to the Altera board and the PC (via the
Parallel Port). Connect the AC adapter to the board and plug into
an appropriate outlet. The Power light should turn on.

2) Insert the CD included with the Tempest Project Manual

3) Open the Application “MAX+plus II”

4) On the menu bar, click on MAX+plus II, then Programmer.

This will open the Programmer Window:

5) Click on JTAG on the menu bar, then Multi-Device JTAG Chain Setup.
The following window should appear:

6) Under Device Name, select EPF10K20.

Next, click Select Programming File… and choose the .sof file from the
CD which corresponds to the component you wish to load onto the
board.
Click OK.

7) If the following window appears, select Yes:

If it does not, move on to next step.

8) On the Programmer window, click on Configure. This will load the

component onto the Altera board. When successful, a message
will appear stating that configuration is complete.

9) You may now test the components of the hardware using the DIP
switches, pinouts and LEDs on the board. Disconnecting power will erase
the information on the board!
Changing the Pinouts and Inputs

Using the pin diagram on the following pages, you can change the pinouts and inputs of
the device using the Graphic Editor.

1) On the menu bar, click on MAX+plus II, then Graphic Editor:

2) On the menu bar, click on File, then Open… and select the
appropriate .gdf file for the component you wish to edit.

3) On an input or output pin, such as this one:

Right click, then select:

4) Click on Assign Device…, “Device Family: should say ”FLEX10K”

Make sure “Show Only Fastest Speed Grades” is unchecked
Under “Devices:” select EPF10K20RC240-4 and click OK.

5) Select an appropriate pin (using the layout guide) and Pin type. Then
press OK. Repeat as necessary for other inputs/outputs. Do not
repeat
Step 4 above!

6) Save file, then on the menu bar, click on File, then Project -> Set Project
to Current File.

7) On the menu bar, click on MAX+plus II, then Complier. Click on

Compile.

8) Repeat steps for “Using the Altera FLEX10K Board” starting with Step 4.
Troubleshooting

Compiling-
Make sure you always select Set Project to Current File before compiling.
If any errors occur when compiling, click on Processing, then select Functional SNF
Extractor
If there are errors dealing with the Fitter, select Processing, then Fitter Settings. Make
sure Quartus… is unchecked, and restart the application and try again.

Pinouts-
Follow the pinout guide carefully, make sure a pin is never assigned twice.

“Programming hardware is busy” error –

Drivers for the ByteBlasterMV cable may be needed. If all else fails, use the PCs in the
Engineering Technology Lab, which have the drivers preinstalled.
