ABSTRACT

Wireless communication has announced its arrival on big stage and

the world is going mobile. We want to control everything and without
moving an inch. This remote control of appliances is possible through
Embedded Systems. The use of “Embedded System in
Communication” has given rise to many interesting applications that
ensures comfort and safety to human life.
One other area where embedded systems have made a profound
impact is the field of robotics. Robotics brings together several very
different engineering areas and skills. There is metalworking for the
body. There is mechanics for mounting the wheels on the axles,
connecting them to the motors and keeping the body in balance. You
need electronics to power the motors and connect the sensors to the
controllers. At last you need the software to understand the sensors
and drive the robot around.
This project is an attempt to integrate the functionalities of embedded
systems in wireless communication with those of robotics. The project
aims at designing a multi functional robot that is GSM controlled. A
GSM-controlled robotic application is a Robot that can be controlled,
and navigated by the usage of mobile networks or GSM (Global
Sytems for Mobile) technology. It can handle and execute commands
derived from mobile phone bases initiation and can also be
programmed to work autonomously as per the situation demands.
GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is the world's
most popular standard for mobile telephony systems. The GSM
standard has been an advantage to both consumers, who may
benefit from the ability to roam and switch carriers without replacing
phones, and also to network operators, who can choose equipment
from many GSM equipment vendors.[4] GSM also pioneered low-cost
implementation of the short message service (SMS), also called text
messaging, which has since been supported on other mobile phone
standards as well. One of the biggest advantages of the GSM
network is its use of SIM, or subscriber identity module, cards to
identify users' phones. The GSM network extends around the world,
allowing users of GSM phones to place roaming calls from more
locations those users of CDMA phones.
The proposed robot is capable of obstacle avoidance, metal detection
and colour sensing depending on the message sent by the user.
Obstacle Avoidance
In robotics, obstacle avoidance is the task of satisfying some control
objective subject to non-intersection or non-collision position
constraints. Normally obstacle avoidance is considered to be distinct
from path planning in that one is usually implemented as a reactive
control law while the other involves the pre-computation of an
obstacle-free path which a controller will then guide a robot along.
Metal Detection
In robtics, metal detection is the process where the designed robot is
used to detect the presence or absence of a metal. In the proposed
robot,on detection of a metal, the user receives an SMS sayin metal
was detected.
Colour Sensing
In robotics, color sensing as the name suggests is incorporating the
function of differentiating between colours to the robot. At the basic
level, this robot can sense 3 colours, though technically speaking it is
extendable upto 8 colours. The blinking of the LED indicates the
corresponding colour which has been sensed.
